Objection Handling
When to use
Use this before you take a recommendation into a tough room: a skeptical board, a contested investment committee, a leadership team with entrenched opposing views. It is the right skill when the analysis is strong but the reception will be adversarial, when a known critic will be present, or when a past version of this proposal was derailed by a question no one had prepared for. The room is often lost not on the argument but on the unanswered challenge.
What it does
It runs a pre-mortem of the pushback: it imagines the recommendation has just been torn apart and works out exactly which questions did the damage, then drafts a crisp, honest, evidence-backed answer to each. It sorts objections by likelihood and lethality, prepares the hardest ones first, and rehearses the responses so they land calmly under pressure. The output is a question-and-answer battle card that turns the feared moment of the meeting into your strongest.
Method
Pin down the recommendation and the room. State the recommendation exactly as it will be presented and who is in the room, including their known positions and interests. Objection prep is audience-specific; the same recommendation draws different fire from a CFO than from a division head.
Pre-mortem the pushback. Assume the recommendation was rejected or savaged, and ask why. Work backward to the specific questions and objections that would have caused it. Framing it as a failure that already happened surfaces harder challenges than politely asking "what might they ask?"
Generate objections across every angle. Sweep systematically so nothing is missed: challenges to the data and evidence, to the assumptions, to the logic, to the economics, to feasibility and execution, to risk, to cost, to timing, and the political or self-interested objections ("this takes budget from my area"). Include the objection no one says aloud but everyone is thinking.
Capture each objection in the challenger's own sharpest form. Write each objection as its most credible, most pointed version, the way its strongest advocate would put it, not a soft strawman you can easily bat away. If your prepared version of the objection is weaker than the one you will actually face, the prep is worthless.
Score objections on likelihood and lethality. Rate how likely each is to be raised and how much damage it does if unanswered. The high-likelihood, high-lethality objections are where preparation concentrates; a killer question that you fumble can sink an otherwise strong case. Rank them.
Draft a tight answer to each. For every objection, write a concise, direct response: acknowledge the point honestly, answer it with specific evidence or reasoning, and where relevant reframe it. Lead with the answer, then the support. Avoid defensiveness and avoid over-talking; a crisp two-sentence answer beats a rambling three-minute one.
Concede what is true. Where an objection lands a real point, concede it cleanly and show why the recommendation still holds despite it. Trying to defend the indefensible destroys credibility for the whole case; a well-placed "you are right about that, and here is why it does not change the conclusion" builds it.
Prepare the evidence to hand. For each answer, know exactly which fact, chart, or appendix slide backs it, and have it ready to show. The difference between a confident answer and a shaky one is often whether the proof is one gesture away. Note the backup exhibit for each high-risk objection.
Prepare for the follow-up. The dangerous objections come in chains: the first answer invites a sharper second question. For the top objections, anticipate the follow-up and prepare that answer too, so you are not caught one move short.
Plan the composure and the bridge. Decide how you will handle the genuinely hostile or bad-faith question: stay calm, do not get defensive, answer the legitimate core even if the framing is unfair, and bridge back to the recommendation. Prepare a graceful line for "I do not have that to hand" that commits to follow up rather than bluffing.
Rehearse out loud. Practice the answers to the top objections aloud, ideally with a colleague playing the critic, until they are calm, short, and natural. Preparation that stays on paper collapses under live pressure; rehearsal is what makes it hold.

Example
Recommendation: reallocate budget from an established program to a new growth bet (illustrative). Room: CEO, CFO (evidence-driven), and the division head who loses budget (self-interested opponent).
