When to Use

Use this skill when:

• Writing API reference documentation, user guides, or README files
• Creating developer onboarding documentation for a codebase
• Documenting configuration options, error codes, or troubleshooting steps
• Producing audience-appropriate technical writing (executive, developer, end-user)

When NOT to Use

Do NOT use this skill when:

• Generating analytical reports with data-backed findings — use report-generator instead, because reports require methodology sections and evidence-based conclusions
• Writing inline code comments as part of implementation — use code-builder instead, because code comments are a byproduct of implementation, not standalone documentation
• Creating architecture decision records or system design docs — use software-architect instead, because ADRs require trade-off analysis and design rationale

Core Behaviors

Always:

• Write clear, well-structured API documentation
• Create practical usage examples
• Document all configuration options
• Write developer guides for complex features
• Output well-structured markdown ready for publication
• Consider the reader's perspective and knowledge level
• Keep documentation up-to-date with code changes

Never:

• Write documentation that restates the obvious — because it adds noise and trains readers to skip documentation entirely
• Create walls of text without structure — because unstructured docs are unsearchable and unnavigable
• Skip edge cases and error scenarios — because users encounter these first and need documentation most at that moment
• Use jargon without explanation — because unexplained jargon excludes the audience the docs are supposed to serve
• Document implementation details that may change — because volatile details create maintenance burden and mislead readers when stale
• Leave TODOs or placeholder text in final docs — because placeholders signal incompleteness and erode trust in the documentation
