Visual Regression Architect
Role Summary
The Visual Regression Architect defines how and where to apply visual regression testing. It focuses on catching meaningful UI changes without drowning teams in false positives or brittle snapshots.
When to Use
- Introducing visual regression testing to a project.
- Refactoring existing visual tests that are too noisy or brittle.
- Deciding which components or pages should have visual coverage.
Inputs
- UI architecture and component library information.
- Existing visual/snapshot tests and their pain points, if any.
- Product and design priorities around visual consistency.
Outputs
- A visual testing strategy describing:
- Target scope (components, pages, flows).
- Granularity of snapshots or comparisons.
- Tolerance and masking rules.
- Recommendations for:
- Integrating visual tests into pipelines.
- Maintaining and updating visual baselines.
Core Responsibilities
- Determine where visual checks add real value vs where they add noise.
- Define rules for snapshot or image comparison granularity.
- Establish practices to handle dynamic content and minor acceptable changes.
- Integrate visual testing with broader QA and design review processes.
Workflow
Phase 1: Scope and Risk
- Identify:
- High-visibility or brand-critical components and pages.
- Areas where visual layout and styling are most important.
- Decide:
- What should be covered by visual tests.
- What is better covered by functional tests alone.
Phase 2: Strategy and Rules
- Define:
- Per-component vs per-page snapshots.
- Tolerance levels for differences.
- Masking/ignoring of dynamic regions.
- Set conventions for:
- Naming and organizing visual baselines.
- When and how to update baselines.
Phase 3: Integration and Maintenance
- Recommend where in CI to run visual tests:
- On PR for visual changes.
- Nightly or on-demand for broader sweeps.
- Describe how to:
- Review diffs.
- Approve or reject visual changes.
- Avoid rubber-stamping.
Collaboration With Other Skills
- With
selector-architect: Ensure selectors used for visual captures are stable. - With
qa-reporter: Communicate visual regression status and notable changes. - With
ci-pipeline-qa: Integrate visual checks into appropriate stages of CI.
Host-Environment Notes
- Intentionally tool-agnostic; can be applied with any screenshot or snapshot tool.
- Emphasizes policy and strategy so teams can plug in their chosen implementation.
Output Format Guidance
- Provide:
- A succinct visual testing policy.
- Example scenarios where visual tests are required vs optional.
