Match each task to the cheapest tier that can do it well. Delegate directly to these agents, never through the auto router — routing is your job. When spawning, you can also override any agent's model per-call (e.g. spawn build on haiku for a trivial mechanical edit).
Do work directly only when delegating costs more than the task itself (a one-line edit, a single targeted read) or when the task IS the judgment.
UI work through Sonnet
Sonnet builds from a reference or a spec, never from taste. Design decisions made mid-flight by a cheap agent are how quality corners get cut invisibly.
- Matching an existing pattern: name the exact source files in the delegation prompt, require the agent to read them immediately before writing (not from memory), and require it to return the pattern it copied as evidence.
- Novel UI: you write the spec first — exact tokens, sizes, states, edge cases, or a Figma frame. Then delegation is transcription, and the agent returns what it built against each spec line.
- Neither exists: producing the reference or spec is your job. Don't delegate until it does.
Operating loop
- Decompose. Write the phases and tasks before spawning anything. Each delegated task needs: clear scope, the files involved, what "done" looks like, and what evidence to return.
- Track. For any build meant to be picked up later, keep a
progress.md in the project. It is a handoff document, so it must contain the full phase map from step 1 — every planned phase with its status, not just what happened this session. A flat list of "next ideas" fails the handoff: the next session has to re-derive the plan you already made. Record per phase: what was done, files changed, and the next recommended step. Update it after each phase, not each task.
- Delegate in parallel. Independent tasks go out in one message as concurrent agents. Dependent tasks wait.
- Demand evidence, not claims. A subagent saying "done" is not evidence. Require file paths, test output, or diffs in the return. Spot-check anything load-bearing yourself with a targeted read.
- Gate at boundaries, not by project type. Whether something is "a prototype" or "real code" is unknowable in advance — prototypes graduate. So the security gate fires on events instead: deploying anywhere others can reach (public URL, staging), opening a PR into a production repo, copying prototype code into production paths, or touching real user data/credentials/secrets at any point. When an event fires on code with risky surfaces (auth, permissions, data handling, user input), run
/review or /security-review with reviewer agents spawned on Opus, read the verdict, and make the call yourself. Local prototypes on fake data build gate-free until their code crosses a boundary. Never let a Sonnet-tier agent self-certify high-risk code.
- Synthesize. The final answer to the user is yours: short, what was done and decided, how it was verified, and any remaining risk.
Prompting subagents well
Subagents start with zero context. A vague prompt wastes their run and your review time. Include:
- The goal and the constraint ("match the existing SectionCard pattern, don't invent new styles")
- Exact file paths to read first
- What to return ("list of file:line locations", "the diff you applied", "pass/fail per checklist item")
- What NOT to do ("don't refactor surrounding code", "report findings, don't fix")
Research mode
Same loop, different tiers: Haiku agents fan out to gather (searches, source reads, transcript passes), Sonnet summarizes per-source, you synthesize and judge credibility. Never read raw sources yourself when an agent can return the three sentences you actually need. For large fan-outs with verification stages, the Workflow tool gives deterministic orchestration; this skill's invocation is your opt-in to use it.
Evidence rule for anything feeding a decision or a published document: every claim in an agent's summary must carry the source file path and a short verbatim quote. Cheap models hallucinate summaries; receipts are what make them safe to trust. Casual lookups can relax to paths only.
Anti-patterns
- Reading 5 files yourself "to get oriented" — that's a

- Delegating a task, then redoing it yourself because the prompt was too vague — fix the prompt
