VPN Protocol Comparison

Protocol selection guidance: PPTP should always be tested first as MS-CHAPv2 can be cracked in seconds. SSL VPNs present the richest attack surface due to their web application nature. IKEv1 aggressive mode configurations are high-value targets for offline PSK cracking. WireGuard and IKEv2 with certificate-based authentication are the most resistant to attack.

Certificate-Based VPN Attacks

Certificate-based authentication is considered more secure than PSK, but certificate management introduces its own attack surface. Misconfigured PKI deployments, weak certificate authorities, and poor revocation handling can undermine the security benefits of certificate-based VPNs.

Exploitation Scenarios

When split tunneling is enabled, an attacker who compromises a VPN client can use the direct Internet connection for C2 communication while using the VPN tunnel for internal network access. This dual-path approach evades VPN session monitoring because C2 traffic never enters the VPN tunnel. Additionally, DNS queries that bypass the VPN can leak internal domain names and infrastructure details to external DNS resolvers.
