Generate titles and subtitles for nonfiction books optimized for both human curiosity and Amazon discoverability.

Core Principle: Subtitle First, Title Second

This is Joshua Lisec's key insight, and it contradicts how most authors think. The subtitle does the selling. The title does the stopping.

Why subtitle first: The subtitle carries the promises — what the reader gets. Once you know what you're promising, you can craft a title that makes a stranger curious enough to click. Working title-first leads to clever-but-empty titles that don't convert.

The Job of Each Component

The 6-step buying sequence (Lisec): Stop scrolling → Click → "This looks cool" → Read description → Read sample → Buy. The title's ONLY job is steps 1-2.

Step 1: Define the 3 Promises (Subtitle Work)

Before writing a single title candidate, articulate what the book delivers. Use Lisec's 3-promise framework:

1. List every benefit the reader gets from the book (brainstorm 15-20)
2. Group them into functional vs. emotional
3. Pick the strongest from each category
4. Draft 5-10 subtitle candidates that weave all 3 promises together

Step 2: Keyword Research (Before Titling)

Your subtitle is your strongest SEO asset. Keywords in title/subtitle rank 37% higher than identical keywords in backend boxes (Dave Chesson, 121-author experiment).

Process:

1. Amazon autocomplete: Type your topic, note every suggestion. Use alphabet technique (topic + a, topic + b, etc.)
2. Publisher Rocket / DataForSEO: Get search volume for candidate phrases
3. Competitor mining: Find self-published books with BSR < 100,000. Browse author pages for validated keywords (Kings of Kindle method)
4. Pick 1-2 primary keywords that MUST appear in subtitle
5. Pick 2-3 secondary keywords for backend boxes

Rules:

• Primary keyword belongs in the subtitle, not forced into the title
• Never sacrifice readability for keyword stuffing
• Don't duplicate subtitle keywords in backend boxes (wastes indexing)
• Subtitle keywords should sound natural when read aloud

Step 3: Title Generation (Curiosity Mechanisms)

Now that you know what you're promising (subtitle) and what people search for (keywords), generate the title. The title's job is CURIOSITY, not clarity. The subtitle handles clarity.

The disagreement: Tucker Max and Joshua Lisec both say curiosity > clarity in titles. Dave Chesson and KDP Kings say keywords > curiosity because Amazon search drives discovery. The resolution: Use a curiosity-driven title + keyword-rich subtitle. This gives you both. Lisec's approach and Chesson's data are not in conflict — they optimize different components.

Title Constraints (Data-Driven)

Title + Subtitle Length

• Amazon limit: 200 characters total (title + subtitle)
• Optimal display: 60-80 characters total (beyond this, Amazon truncates in search results)
• Title: 2-6 words / 1-6 syllables
• Subtitle: 8-15 words

Step 4: Evaluate Candidates

Score each candidate 0 or 1 on each criterion:

Scoring: 8-10 = strong candidate. 6-7 = needs work. Below 6 = restart.

Step 5: Test Before Publishing

What to test:

• Title only (no subtitle) — does it create curiosity?
• Title + subtitle together — does it convert?
• Title on a mock cover at thumbnail size — is it readable?

Step 6: Final Validation

Before locking the title:

• Search Amazon for exact title — no duplicates in your category
• Search Google for exact title — no dominant results that will bury you
• Primary keyword appears naturally in subtitle
• Title + subtitle total < 80 characters (ideal) or < 200 characters (max)
• Title works at thumbnail size on the cover
• Subtitle could stand alone as a clear book description
• You can say the full title + subtitle in one breath
• At least one person in your target audience has reacted positively
• Title does NOT contain: health claims (heal/cure), Amazon program names, brand names, or subjective claims (best/amazing/#1)
• The free opening chapter slakes the curiosity the title creates AND proves the subtitle's promises (Lisec's "Chapter 1 test")

Step 2 — Keywords: "meal prep for beginners" (8K monthly searches), "easy meal prep" (5K)

Step 3 — Title candidates:
