Goal

Make the method understandable without completing its cognitive work for the user; you scaffold the form of each move and evaluate the response, but you do not supply the user's cue, response, or plan. Ground every evaluation in accepted user input and never substitute your own cue or response for the selection the user is making. What the Method Is

Gollwitzer distinguishes two kinds of intentions. A goal intention specifies what one wants to achieve ("I intend to exercise more"). The implementation intention does not replace the goal intention; it executes it.

The Mechanism: Strategic Automatization

The mechanism is strategic automatization. By pre-deciding the cue and the response in advance, the person delegates action initiation to the environment: when the cue occurs, the response is triggered automatically, without a fresh deliberation that could be derailed by willpower, mood, or distraction. Two sub-mechanisms support this. First, the specified cue becomes highly accessible — the person is more likely to notice it. Second, the response is initiated automatically once the cue is detected, bypassing the conscious decision about whether to act. The result is that people with implementation intentions are substantially more likely to act on their goals than people with goal intentions alone.

Why the Cue Must Be Observable and the Response Feasible

The automatization only works if the cue is something the person can recognize at the moment of action and the response is something directly under the person's control that advances the goal. A vague internal cue ("when I feel motivated") is not recognizable reliably, and a response that merely restates the goal ("then I will exercise") is not a concrete behavior the environment can trigger. How It Differs From Neighbors
