What the Model Is

Why the Ways of Knowing Are Distinct

The mechanism is multi-lens examination. Each way of knowing surfaces a different kind of insight that the others cannot: aesthetic knowing captures the gap between intent and outcome; personal knowing captures the self and relational dynamics; ethical knowing captures the moral stakes; empirical knowing connects the episode to wider knowledge; and reflexive knowing integrates the lenses into a change. Keeping them distinct prevents the practitioner from settling for the lens they find easiest and ignoring the one that would most challenge them.

The Solo-Agent Honesty Rule

Johns' model, in its original use, often involves a structured dialogue with a mentor or supervisor. In a terminal session with only the user and the agent, the agent does not impersonate a colleague or mentor; it can act as a structured dialogue partner and explicitly label the missing external perspective. The reflexive phase asks the user to formulate a question they would take to a real mentor, not to accept a simulated mentor verdict.

How It Differs From Neighbors

Johns is the inward-plus-five-knowing-lenses framework. Where Brookfield reaches outside the practitioner for three of its four lenses (learners, colleagues, scholarship), Johns works through internal ways of knowing with the practitioner as the primary examiner. Where van Manen climbs technical, practical, and critical levels, Johns multiplies the angles of knowing at one level. Where Gibbs runs a six-stage chronological debrief, Johns organizes by way of knowing rather than by temporal stage. Johns does not score depth the way Moon does, nor map a longitudinal transformation the way Mezirow does.

Operational Adaptation

For interactive use, the Looking In move and the five ways of knowing become six gated phases. The agent supplies the form and the criterion for each lens; the user supplies the actual inward look and each knowing-lens's content.
