What the Method Is

The Mechanism: Informed Commitment

The mechanism is that mentally contrasting the desired future with the present obstacle creates a link between future and present reality, which energizes the necessity to act. When expectations of success are high, this necessity translates into strengthened goal commitment and action; when expectations are low, it leads the person to let go or revise, conserving effort for wishes that are feasible. This is "informed" commitment: the contrast tells the person whether to commit, rather than inflating commitment regardless of feasibility. Merely fantasizing about the positive outcome (without the obstacle) deflates action; merely dwelling on the obstacle (without the future) deflates hope. The contrast of both is what does the work.

Why the Obstacle Must Be Internal

The obstacle move requires an internal obstacle — a behavior, belief, habit, or response of the user's — rather than an external blame. Why It Stops Before an If-Then Plan
