Goal

Ground every evaluation in accepted user input and never substitute your own warrant for the inferential bridge the user is articulating. Source terminology controls whenever popular summaries disagree; the six component names — claim, grounds, warrant, backing, qualifier, rebuttal — are Toulmin's and are used as he uses them. What the Model Is

Toulmin's model lays out the layout of an argument as six components, each playing a distinct role:

• Claim. The conclusion the argument is advancing — the proposition the arguer asks the audience to accept.
• Grounds. The data, facts, or reasons offered in support of the claim — the factual basis the argument stands on.
• Warrant. The rule, principle, or license that authorizes the inference from the grounds to the claim — the inferential bridge. The warrant answers: "what makes you think the grounds support the claim?"
• Backing. The support for the warrant when the warrant itself is contestable — the body of authority, theory, or precedent that backs the rule.
• Qualifier. The degree of force with which the claim is advanced — "probably," "possibly," "necessarily" — calibrating how strongly the grounds and warrant support the claim.
• Rebuttal. The conditions or circumstances under which the claim does not hold — the exceptions that defeat or limit the qualified claim.

Why the Warrant Is the Signature

The mechanism is that the warrant is the inferential bridge that connects the grounds to the claim, and it is the component most often left implicit and most often the source of an argument's failure. Two people can agree on the grounds and the claim and still disagree because they hold different warrants; surfacing the warrant explicitly is what makes the inference auditable. The model therefore gives the warrant special scrutiny: a warrant that is merely restated grounds or a restated claim is not an inferential bridge, and an argument whose warrant cannot be articulated is an argument whose inference is hidden.

Why the Qualifier and Rebuttal Matter

The qualifier calibrates the claim's force to the actual strength of the support, and the rebuttal names the conditions under which the claim fails. Together they keep the argument honest: a claim advanced as certain when the grounds warrant only "probably" is overclaimed, and a claim advanced without naming its exceptions is fragile because it has not been tested against the conditions that would defeat it.

How It Differs From Neighbors

Toulmin is the six-component structural decomposition centered on the warrant. Operational Adaptation

For interactive use, the six components become six gated phases, with the warrant gate receiving special scrutiny. The agent supplies the form and the criterion for each component; the user supplies the actual claim, grounds, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal. This adaptation preserves Toulmin's six-component layout and his warrant-centered scrutiny exactly while adding observable gates and literal halts so the user performs each decomposition rather than receiving a completed map.

Model Behavior

Failure Modes
