DECISION POINTS

SYMPTOM ASSESSMENT TREE
If presenting concern involves...

EMOTIONAL REACTIVITY/PROJECTION
├── Intense attraction to certain people → Shadow work (positive shadow)
├── Intense revulsion to certain types → Shadow work (negative shadow)
└── Both attraction AND revulsion → Anima/Animus projection

DREAM CONTENT
├── Threatening same-sex figures → Shadow encounter
├── Opposite-sex figures (wise/seductive) → Anima/Animus work
├── Animals, water, death → Archetypal amplification
└── Recurring themes → Series analysis

ADDICTION/COMPULSIVE PATTERNS
├── Recent crisis/bottom → Spiritus contra spiritum framework
├── Multiple failed attempts → Ego-Self axis exploration
└── Ready for depth work → Archetypal pattern mapping

LIFE TRANSITIONS/CRISIS
├── Mid-life crisis → Individuation process assessment
├── Career/relationship breakdown → Persona dissolution work
└── Loss of meaning → Self encounter preparation

SOMATIC SYMPTOMS WITHOUT MEDICAL CAUSE
├── Chronic tension/pain → Body-held shadow material
├── Unexplained fatigue → Unlived life assessment
└── Sleep disturbances → Dream work + shadow exploration

FAILURE MODES

1. Authoritative Dream Dictation

• Detection: "Your dream means X" statements without exploration
• Fix: Ask "What does this symbol mean to YOU?" Use amplification, not interpretation
• Prevention: Always start with dreamer's associations

2. Shadow as Dark Side Only

• Detection: Focus exclusively on negative rejected qualities
• Fix: Explore positive shadow - "What gifts do you disown in yourself?"
• Prevention: Balance work between negative and positive shadow material

3. Archetypal Inflation

• Detection: "I AM the Hero/Mother/Wise Old Man" language
• Fix: Shift to "The Hero archetype is active in me right now"
• Prevention: Maintain ego-archetype distinction in all discussions

4. Intellectual Bypass

• Detection: Heavy concept use without emotional engagement or embodied experience
• Fix: "How does this land in your body? What do you feel?"
• Prevention: Balance head knowledge with heart integration

5. Premature Integration Rush

• Detection: Wanting to "fix" or integrate shadow material immediately
• Fix: Emphasize relationship-building before integration attempts
• Prevention: Teach "befriending" phase before "integrating" phase

WORKED EXAMPLES

Example 1: Dream Interpretation with Trade-off Analysis

Presenting Dream: "I'm being chased by a dark man through my childhood home. I wake up terrified."

Decision Point Navigation:

• Threatening same-sex figure → Shadow encounter protocol
• Childhood home → Personal unconscious material vs. collective

Process:

1. Personal Associations: "What comes to mind with 'dark man'?"
   • Client: "My father when he was angry. Men who are aggressive."
2. Shadow Hypothesis: "What if this dark man contains something you've rejected about yourself?"
3. Trade-off Analysis:
   • Avoiding aggression → Also avoiding healthy assertion
   • Rejecting "darkness" → Missing protective instincts
4. Integration Question: "How might you need some of his qualities, in a healthy form?"

Outcome: Client recognizes need for healthy boundaries and protective energy.

Example 2: Shadow Work Progression

Presenting Issue: "I can't stand my micromanaging boss. She triggers me every day."

Shadow Work Steps:

1. Projection Recognition: "What exactly bothers you most about her control?"
2. Personal Inventory: "Where in your life do you micromanage others?"
3. Positive Shadow: "What might be valuable about attention to detail and structure?"
4. Integration Planning: "How could you use healthy control in your own domain?"

Quality Gate Check:

• 3 specific triggers identified ✓
• Projection traced to personal pattern ✓
• Positive shadow capacity named ✓
• Integration step chosen ✓

Example 3: Addiction Recovery Scenario

Presenting Issue: 6 months sober, struggling with meaning and purpose.

Jungian Framework Application:

1. Spiritus Contra Spiritum: "What spiritual thirst was the alcohol addressing?"
2. Ego-Self Axis: Map the fractured connection - where did ego lose touch with deeper Self?
3. Archetypal Pattern: Identify which myth is active (Hero's descent, Prometheus, etc.)
4. Shadow Integration: "What aspects of yourself did the drinking both express and suppress?"

Progression Markers:

• Recognizes alcohol as misguided attempt at transcendence
• Identifies legitimate spiritual/meaning needs
• Develops non-substance practices for Self connection
