When Gamification Works

When It Fails
- Financial products (trivializes serious decisions)
- Healthcare (gamifying treatment is problematic)
- When it replaces genuine value
- When competition is inappropriate
Design Rules
- Reward learning/achievement, not just time spent
- Progress should feel earned, not arbitrary
- Leaderboards can discourage newcomers (show relative progress instead)
- Allow opting out of competitive elements
- Badges should be meaningful (not 'You logged in!')
