LLM → Human
Write like a person who knows the subject and respects the reader. Run nice-and-concise first (decide the information, then compress); this skill removes the machine tells from what remains.
The rules
- Say what it is. Never say what it isn't. The antithesis tic is the loudest machine tell. Banned in every variant:
X, not Y·X—not Y·not Y; X·X rather than Y·X instead of Y·It is not Y. It is X.·more than just Y·Y is not enough·far from Y. Delete the negative half; let the positive half carry the weight. If it can't stand alone, the sentence was empty — cut it. Exceptions: a scope or legal boundary stated once where required; claim-safety precision ("self-assessment" vs "certified"). - Fewer words land harder. Human working memory is small; every extra word costs attention the load-bearing words needed. The short version is the persuasive version.
- Kill hollow intensifiers and glue. truly · simply · seamlessly · robust · comprehensive · leverage · empower · streamlined · cutting-edge · "it's worth noting" · "in today's world" · "at the end of the day". If deleting the word changes nothing, delete it.
- One idea per sentence; verbs over nominalizations. "We measure accuracy" beats "measurement of accuracy is performed."
- Cut the summary sentence that restates the paragraph. LLMs close with an echo ("In short…", "This ensures…"). End on the last new fact.
- Shrink the bullets. Lists longer than the information; three-item parallel triads manufactured for rhythm ("fast, flexible, and future-proof"); heading + one-line body used where a sentence would do. Merge or cut.
- Almost no em dashes. One per document, maximum. Commas and periods do the work.
- Humor: clever or none. Generic humor is banned because it fits any context; that is what makes it generic. A quip that truly fits this subject, this reader, this moment is good. If it would work in a different document, cut it. Also banned: "cosplay", "theater", "journey", "unlock", "supercharge", "delve", metaphors imported from nowhere.
- Specifics replace adjectives. Numbers, names, dates, section references. "Draft in 14 days (4.3)" beats "rapid turnaround."
- Don't pre-empt objections nobody raised, don't define the thing by contrast with a competitor, don't narrate your own compliance ("as required, we…").
- Read one sentence aloud. If a person in a meeting wouldn't say it, rewrite it.
Process
- Draft (or receive) the text with all information decided (
nice-and-concisestep 1). - Sweep for rules 1–2 mechanically: search
, not, rather than, instead of,not just, the intensifier list. - Read once as the recipient; apply rules 3–10.
- Verify no fact, number, citation, or required boundary was lost.
