UGC Content Best Practices
1. What Makes Great UGC Content?
Essential Elements:
- ✅ Authenticity: Real person, real setting, real experience
- ✅ Relatability: Viewers can see themselves in the content
- ✅ Honesty: Including minor critiques builds trust
- ✅ Casual Production: Smartphone quality, minimal editing
- ✅ Natural Integration: Product shown in context, not forced
- ✅ Personal Voice: Creator's unique personality shines through
What UGC is NOT:
- ❌ Highly polished, professional ad-style content
- ❌ Scripted promotional language ("amazing", "must-have", "game-changer")
- ❌ Perfect staging and lighting
- ❌ Celebrity or macro-influencer endorsements
- ❌ Generic, one-size-fits-all content
2. UGC vs. Influencer Content
| Aspect | UGC Content | Influencer Content |
|---|---|---|
| Creator Type | Everyday users | Professional influencers |
| Follower Count | 1K-50K | 50K+ |
| Production Quality | Casual, smartphone | Professional, edited |
| Trust Level | Very high (peer) | Medium (paid promotion) |
| Cost | 100-500 CNY | 1,000-50,000 CNY |
| Tone | Honest, relatable | Polished, aspirational |
| Best For | Trust, authenticity | Reach, awareness |
When to Use UGC:
- Building trust and credibility
- Showing real-world product usage
- Creating social proof
- Generating diverse customer perspectives
- Budget-conscious campaigns
- Testing product-market fit
When to Use Influencers:
- Maximizing reach
- Launching new products
- Aspirational brand positioning
- Viral marketing campaigns
3. Managing UGC Creator Expectations
Brief Template:
Hi [Creator Name],
We're excited to work with you on this UGC campaign!
**What We're Looking For:**
- Your genuine, honest experience with the product
- Real-world usage in your daily life
- Casual, unscripted content (think: talking to a friend)
- Your unique perspective and personality
**What We DON'T Want:**
- Overly scripted or salesy language
- Perfect, professional-looking production
- Fake enthusiasm or exaggerated claims
- Generic content that could be about any brand
**Honesty is Key:**
- If there's something you don't love about the product, say so!
- Balanced reviews are more trustworthy
- We value authenticity over perfection
**Creative Freedom:**
- We trust your judgment on how to integrate the product
- Show it the way YOU would naturally use it
- Use your own words and style
Looking forward to your authentic take!
4. UGC Content Rights & Usage
Licensing Models:
Option 1: Single-Use Rights
- Creator posts on their account only
- Brand cannot repurpose content
- Lowest cost (100-300 CNY)
Option 2: Full Usage Rights
- Brand can repurpose for ads, website, social media
- Creator retains right to post on their account
- Higher cost (+50-100% of base rate)
Option 3: Exclusive Rights
- Brand gets exclusive usage, creator cannot post elsewhere
- Highest cost (+100-200% of base rate)
Recommended Approach:
- Start with single-use rights for testing
- Negotiate full usage rights for top-performing UGC
- Always credit creator when repurposing
- Compensate fairly for additional usage
5. Measuring UGC Success
Key Metrics:
| Metric | Target | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticity Score | 0.85+ | How genuine content feels |
| Comment Quality | High trust signals | "Where can I buy?", "Looks so useful!" |
| Save Rate | 5-10% | Intent to reference later |
| Share Rate | 3-8% | Peer recommendation value |
| Engagement Rate | 8-15% | Overall audience connection |
| Conversion Intent | Comments asking about purchase | Purchase consideration |
Qualitative Indicators:
- Comments saying "This looks so real/genuine"
- Users tagging friends ("You need this!")
- Viewers sharing personal experiences in comments
- Low skepticism or "this is an ad" comments

Troubleshooting
Content Feels Too Promotional
Problem: UGC creator made content that feels like an ad, not authentic.
Solutions:
- Revise Brief: Emphasize casual, friend-to-friend tone
- Show Examples: Share successful UGC examples (not influencer ads)
- Request Revision: Ask for more natural, less scripted version
- Coaching: "Imagine explaining this to a friend over coffee"
Low Engagement Despite Authenticity
Problem: Content is genuine but not getting views/engagement.
Solutions:
- Timing: Post during peak hours (evenings, weekends)
- Hook: Strengthen first 3 seconds to grab attention
- Trending Elements: Add trending sound or effect while keeping authenticity
- Hashtags: Use mix of niche and broader hashtags
Creator Gave Negative Review
Problem: UGC creator posted honest but critical review.
Approach:
- ✅ Still Approve & Pay: Honesty was the agreement
- ✅ Learn from Feedback: Use critiques to improve product
- ✅ Appreciate Honesty: Rate creator positively for following brief
- ❌ Don't Penalize: Negative reviews build trust when mixed with positive UGC
Note: Mix of positive and slightly critical UGC creates balanced, trustworthy narrative.
