Writing the Literature Review

• Never write source-by-source. "Smith (2020) found... Jones (2021) found... Lee (2022) found..." reads like an annotated bibliography, not a review.

What Academic Voice Is

Academic voice is:

• Precise (every word means exactly what you intend)
• Evidence-based (claims are supported by citation or data)
• Objective in tone (even when arguing a position)
• Clear (complexity of ideas does not require complexity of expression)
• Authoritative (you know this material and can guide the reader through it)

What Academic Voice Is NOT

• Needlessly complex (jargon for its own sake)
• Passive by default ("it was found that" when "we found" is clearer and increasingly accepted)
• Impersonal to the point of confusion (avoiding "I" or "we" when it creates ambiguity)
• Devoid of argument (presenting data without interpretation)
