Acting Techniques Overview

Stanislavski System

The foundation of modern acting technique. Key principles:

Given Circumstances

• Analyze everything the script tells you about the character
• Who am I? Where am I? When is it? What surrounds me?
• What are the social, political, and historical circumstances?
• Build a complete world around the character's reality

Objective and Super-Objective

• Objective: what the character wants in each scene (use active verbs)
• Super-objective: what the character wants throughout the entire play
• Every line should serve the objective
• Phrase objectives as "I want to..." followed by an active verb
• Examples: "I want to convince," "I want to escape," "I want to seduce"

Magic If

• "What would I do IF I were in this character's circumstances?"
• Bridge between self and character
• Not pretending to be someone else; exploring what you would do
• Grounds performance in personal truth

Emotional Memory (Affective Memory)

• Recall personal sensory experiences to access emotions
• Use sense memory: recall the sights, sounds, smells, textures
• Not about reliving trauma; about accessing emotional availability
• Use with caution; should not cause psychological distress
• This technique is debated; some modern coaches advise against it

Meisner Technique

Based on truthful behavior under imaginary circumstances.

The Repetition Exercise

1. Two partners face each other
2. One makes an observation: "You're wearing a blue shirt"
3. The other repeats it: "I'm wearing a blue shirt"
4. Continue repeating, allowing the reading to change based on genuine response
5. The words stay the same; the meaning shifts with each genuine reaction
6. Develops instinct to respond truthfully rather than performing
7. Practice for 10-15 minutes daily with a partner

Emotional Preparation

• Before entering a scene, prepare an emotional state using personal daydream
• Not specific to the scene; creates emotional availability
• "Come to the door" ready to be affected by the other actor
• The preparation opens you; the other actor determines where it goes

Working Off the Other Actor

• Focus entirely on your scene partner, not on your own performance
• Listen with full attention; respond to what you actually receive
• If your partner gives you something unexpected, follow that truth
• The best acting happens between actors, not inside one performer
• Stop monitoring yourself; let the moment carry you

Independent Activity

• Practice doing a difficult physical task while a partner disrupts you
• Builds the ability to pursue an objective while being affected
• The activity must matter to you and be genuinely difficult
• Develops multidimensional behavior: doing and being affected simultaneously

Practical Aesthetics (Atlantic Theater Company / David Mamet)

Script Analysis Steps:

1. Literal: What is the character literally doing in the scene?
2. Want: What does the character want from the other person (one essential action)?
3. Essential Action: Translate the want into a universal human experience
4. As If: Find a personal parallel: "It's as if I'm trying to get my best friend to forgive me"

Performance:

• Pursue the action moment to moment
• Respond truthfully to what you receive from the other actor
• No emotional preparation; the action and the partner provide everything
• Simple, direct, and grounded

Physical Approaches

Viewpoints (Mary Overlie / Anne Bogart)

• Nine viewpoints of movement: tempo, duration, kinesthetic response, repetition, shape, gesture, architecture, spatial relationship, topography
• Develop physical awareness and ensemble connection
• Practice in group settings; build scenes from movement vocabulary
• Useful for devised and physical theater

Laban Movement Analysis

• Effort qualities: Weight (strong/light), Time (sudden/sustained), Space (direct/indirect), Flow (bound/free)
• Every character has a unique combination of effort qualities
• Use Laban to physicalize character from the outside in
• Experiment: how does your character move through space?

Chekhov Technique (Michael Chekhov)

• Psychological Gesture: a single physical gesture that captures the character's inner life
• Imaginary Body: adopt a different physical form than your own
• Atmospheres: the emotional quality of a space that affects behavior
• Radiating and receiving: directing or absorbing energy

Character Development

Script Analysis Process

1. Read the full script three times minimum

   • First read: audience experience, emotional response, story
   • Second read: character focus, relationships, arc
   • Third read: technical analysis, structure, given circumstances

2. Build the Character Biography

   • Facts from the script (only what is explicitly stated)
   • Inferences (reasonable conclusions from facts)
   • Choices (creative decisions to fill gaps the script leaves open)
   • Physical life: age, health, habits, mannerisms
   • Social life: status, relationships, education, work
   • Psychological life: temperament, beliefs, fears, desires

3. Map the Arc

   • Where does the character start emotionally and psychologically?
   • What events change the character during the story?
   • Where does the character end up?
   • What is the transformation or realization?
   • Identify the turning points; these are the performance peaks

4. Relationship Mapping

   • How does the character feel about every other character?
   • How does each relationship serve or obstruct the objective?
   • What is the history between these characters?
   • How does the relationship change during the story?

Making Strong Choices

• Specificity is power: vague choices produce vague performances
• Choose the most extreme interpretation that the text supports
• Play against expectation when possible (anger played quietly is more threatening)
• Find the humor in serious scenes and the gravity in comic ones
• Commit fully; a bold wrong choice is more useful in rehearsal than a safe one
• You can always adjust; you cannot adjust from nothing

Finding the Opposites

• Characters are rarely one thing consistently
• A villain who loves their dog is more human and more frightening
• Find the vulnerability in strong characters, the strength in weak ones
• Contradictions create dimension
• Ask: what is the character hiding? What do they not want others to see?

Audition Preparation

Before the Audition

Research

• Know the project: full script if possible, synopsis and tone at minimum
• Research the director, the production company, the creative team
• Understand the role: age, type, arc, requirements
• Watch previous work by the director if available

Material Preparation

• Memorize fully; holding sides is acceptable but know the text cold
• Make specific choices about objective, relationship, circumstances
• Prepare the moment before: what just happened before the scene begins
• Have one clear, strong take on the material
• Prepare a subtle alternative if redirected

Physical Preparation

• Dress to suggest the character without wearing a costume
• Arrive 15 minutes early to settle in and warm up
• Physical warm-up: stretch, shake out tension, align posture
• Vocal warm-up: resonance exercises, articulation, breath support
• Emotional warm-up: Meisner preparation or visualization

In the Room

• Walk in with confidence and positive energy
• Make genuine human connection before performing
• Slate clearly: name, representation if applicable
• Take a beat to prepare before beginning; do not rush into it
• Perform to or with the reader, not to the camera (unless directed)
• If you make a mistake, continue; do not break and ask to restart unless major
• Take direction gracefully; show you can adjust
• Thank them and leave cleanly; do not linger or apologize

Self-Tape Guidelines

• Frame: chest and above for close-up; wider for physical scenes
• Background: plain, neutral color (medium gray or blue, not white)
• Lighting: well-lit face, no harsh shadows, natural or soft artificial
• Sound: quiet room, clear audio, no echo
• Reader: off-camera reader is preferred; record reader's lines if alone
• Eye line: just off-camera, not directly into the lens (unless instructed)
• Slate at the beginning: name, role, brief look at camera
• One clean take is better than many choices; submit your strongest
• Follow all submission instructions exactly

Callback Strategy

• Recreate what you did in the first audition (they called you back for that)
• Be prepared to take direction and adjust
• If given new material, ask for preparation time if needed
• Demonstrate versatility while maintaining your core interpretation
• Energy and professionalism matter as much as performance

Monologue Selection

Choosing the Right Monologue

Match the Material:

• Age-appropriate: within 5 years of your actual age
• Type-appropriate: cast yourself honestly
• Tone-appropriate: match the project or audition requirements
• Contemporary for contemporary calls; classical for classical calls
• Avoid overdone monologues (ask acting teachers what they see constantly)

Technical Criteria:

• 60-90 seconds for most auditions (know the time limit)
• Has a clear arc: beginning, shift, end
• Contains an active objective directed at a specific person
• Offers emotional range within a short span
• Showcases your strengths while challenging you appropriately
• From a published play (not film, TV, or self-written, unless specified)

Selection Process:

1. Read widely: visit the library, read published play anthologies
2. Shortlist 10-15 potential pieces
3. Read the full play for each shortlisted monologue (context matters)
4. Narrow to 4-6 monologues that genuinely excite you
5. Prepare 2 contrasting pieces minimum (one comedic, one dramatic)
6. Work the monologues with a coach before performing them in auditions

Preparing a Monologue

1. Identify the objective: what do you want from the person you are speaking to?
2. Identify the person: who specifically are you talking to? Visualize them
3. Establish the relationship: what is your history with this person?
4. Find the moment before: what just happened that compels you to speak now?
5. Map the beats: where does the intention or tactic shift?
6. Find the build: where is the emotional climax of the piece?
7. Determine the ending: how do you leave the moment? What comes next?

Warm-Up Routine

Physical Warm-Up (10 minutes)

1. Alignment check: Stand feet hip-width apart, stack joints, release tension
2. Shake-out: Shake hands, arms, legs, whole body vigorously for 30 seconds
3. Roll-down: Slowly roll spine down to hanging position, roll back up
4. Stretch: Neck circles, shoulder rolls, torso twists, hip circles
5. Tension release: Squeeze and release each body part from toes to face
6. Grounding: Plant feet, feel the floor, breathe deeply into the body

Vocal Warm-Up (10 minutes)

1. Breath: Deep diaphragmatic breaths, exhale on a hiss (sss), extend duration
2. Hum: Start low, sweep through range, feel vibration in chest, face, head
3. Lip trills: Sustained lip trill through range, relaxes the voice
4. Resonance: "Mmm-ah" from hum to open vowel, place sound forward
5. Articulation: Tongue twisters at increasing speed (red leather yellow leather)
6. Range: Siren from lowest comfortable note to highest, smooth transitions
7. Text: Run through opening lines at half speed, then full speed, then with emotion

Emotional Warm-Up (5 minutes)

1. Stillness: Close eyes, breathe, notice physical sensations
2. Observation: Open eyes, notice the room; let details affect you
3. Imagination: Visualize the world of the scene, the relationship, the stakes
4. Preparation: Meisner emotional preparation or sense memory exercise
5. Readiness: Stand at the entrance, breathe, and enter when genuinely ready

Practice Plan

Daily Practice (30 minutes)

• 10 minutes: physical and vocal warm-up
• 10 minutes: observation exercise (watch people, notice behavior, replicate)
• 10 minutes: text work (cold read a scene, analyze a character, run monologue)

Weekly Practice (2-3 hours)

• Run monologues for maintenance (perform, do not just recite)
• Work a new scene with a partner
• Watch one performance (live theater, film, recorded stage performance) analytically
