Your brain has two attention modes:

Default mode (most of studying): Interest-driven, not importance-driven. Your brain will not allocate attention to something just because it is "important." It needs novelty, challenge, urgency, or personal interest.

Hyperfocus mode (occasionally): When something is intrinsically interesting, ADHD brains can lock on with extraordinary intensity. The goal is to create study conditions that mimic what triggers this mode.

There is no single perfect environment. The key is matching stimulation level to your needs.

• Only the materials for the current task are visible on the desk
• Water bottle is within reach (dehydration worsens focus)
• A snack is available (blood sugar drops destroy concentration)

• Discord study servers with cameras on
• YouTube "study with me" livestreams

The 2-Minute Start Rule

The hardest part of studying with ADHD is starting. The brain resists task initiation.

The rule: Commit to studying for only 2 minutes. Set a timer. After 2 minutes, you can stop with zero guilt.

What usually happens: once started, the activation energy barrier is crossed, and continuing is much easier than starting was. You will often keep going.

If you cannot even start 2 minutes:

1. Open the book/app/notes (that is step one, full stop)
2. Read one paragraph or do one flashcard
3. That counts. You studied. Build from there.

Task Switching Protocol

When you notice your attention has drifted:

1. Do not judge yourself (guilt wastes more time than the distraction did)
2. Note what distracted you (pattern recognition helps long-term)
3. Write the distracting thought on a "parking lot" notepad (you can address it later)

• Accept lower output; compensate by studying more sessions rather than longer sessions
• Exercise before studying (30 minutes of cardio improves focus for 1-2 hours)

Exam Preparation

The ADHD Exam Study Plan

Two weeks before the exam:

• Create a complete topic list from the syllabus
• Rate each topic: 1 (no clue), 2 (recognize it), 3 (can explain it), 4 (can teach it)
• Prioritize studying topics rated 1-2
• Make flashcards for all key concepts

One week before:
