When to Use

Use this skill when:

• A parent, caregiver, or family member asks for activity ideas for a child of a specific age or age range (e.g., "What can I do with my 4-year-old on a rainy day?")
• A user wants to understand the developmental purpose behind a type of play (e.g., "Why do kids this age love building and knocking things down?")
• A user asks about age-appropriate play ideas for a specific setting -- home, backyard, car ride, grandparent's house, hotel room
• A user wants to plan a structured week or weekend of activities for one child or multiple children
• A user asks whether a specific activity is appropriate for their child's age (e.g., "Can my 2-year-old use scissors?")
• A user wants activity ideas tied to a specific developmental concern they've noticed, like a child who seems to struggle with focus, sharing, or fine motor tasks
• A user asks about bridging activities for a child who seems developmentally ahead or behind their age band in one domain
• A user needs activities that can occupy mixed-age siblings at the same time

Do NOT use when:

• The user is requesting a formal developmental screening or asking whether their child has a delay, disorder, or diagnosis -- refer to their pediatrician and use developmental-milestones if available
• The user asks for occupational therapy exercises, sensory processing interventions, or physical therapy activities for a child with a diagnosed condition (e.g., sensory processing disorder, hypotonia, autism) -- recommend consulting a licensed therapist
• The user wants a formal school lesson plan, curriculum map, or standards-aligned instructional unit -- use lesson-planning or curriculum-design skills instead
• The user is asking about therapeutic interventions, behavioral modification programs, or ABA strategies -- use behavior-support-strategies
• The user needs structured discipline or consequence frameworks -- use discipline-strategies
• The user is asking about activities for children with significant mobility, communication, or cognitive disabilities without mentioning a support team -- flag the need for specialist consultation before generating a list
• The request is about teen mental health, adolescent peer dynamics, or social skills groups in a clinical sense -- use teen-wellbeing or refer to a counselor

Process

Step 1: Establish the Child's Age and Map to the Correct Developmental Band

Identify the child's age in years and months. If the user provides only a vague description ("toddler," "big kid"), clarify before proceeding.

Map to the correct developmental band using these anchors:

• Band 1 -- Infant/Toddler (0--24 months): Split into 0-12 months (pre-mobile, pre-verbal, sensorimotor-dominant) and 12-24 months (walking, early language, parallel play). These two sub-bands are different enough that you should specify which applies.
• Band 2 -- Preschool (2--5 years): Characterized by rapid language acquisition (50+ new words per month at peak), symbolic play, increasing fine motor control, and beginning of rule-governed play. A 2-year-old and a 4.5-year-old are developmentally very different -- note where in the band the child falls.
• Band 3 -- Early School Age (5--8 years): Concrete operational thinking begins around age 7 (Piaget). Children can follow multi-step rules, read simple text, and engage in cooperative play with genuine negotiation. Peer relationships become central.
• Band 4 -- Middle Childhood (8--12 years): Logical reasoning, sustained attention (30+ minutes on engaging tasks), complex rule systems, team play, and beginning abstract thinking. Industry vs. inferiority (Erikson) -- children need to feel competent and productive.
• Band 5 -- Early Adolescence (12--15 years): Identity formation, peer-group values, formal operational thinking (hypotheticals, strategy), significant interest in autonomy. Activities should offer genuine challenge and perceived independence.

When the child is within 3 months of a band boundary, pull from both adjacent bands and label activities as "consolidating" (current band) or "stretch" (next band).

Step 2: Clarify Context Before Generating Activities

Gather at least three of the following before building the list. If the user's message already answers them, do not re-ask -- extract from context:

• Setting: Indoor, outdoor, car/travel, specific location (backyard, apartment with no yard)
• Time window: 5--10 minute filler, 20--30 minute focused activity, 1--2 hour project, full-day plan
• Group composition: Solo child, caregiver-led together, mixed-age siblings, playdate group (2--4 peers)
• Budget/materials: "We have nothing," "we have art supplies," "willing to buy up to $10 in supplies"
• Child's current interests: Specific obsessions (trucks, princesses, animals, Minecraft, space) -- these are threads to use, not constraints to work around
• Energy level goal: High-energy output needed (restless child), calm and focused, winding-down before nap/bedtime
• Any known sensitivities: Loud sounds, textures, water -- note these as constraints, not diagnoses

Step 3: Select Activities Across All Five Developmental Domains

Choose a minimum of 8 activities and up to 15 for full plans. Distribute across domains using this framework:

Domain 1 -- Gross Motor (Physical): Large-body movement involving balance, coordination, strength, and spatial navigation. Critical for vestibular development, body schema, and cardiovascular health.

• 0-2: Rolling, crawling, pulling to stand, walking on varied surfaces
• 2-5: Running with changes of direction, jumping (both feet), climbing, throwing and kicking
• 5-8: Skipping, hopping on one foot 10+ times, catching a thrown ball, pumping a swing
• 8-12: Complex coordination (juggling, dribbling), sustained aerobic activity, team sports rules
• 12+: Strength, endurance, skill refinement, team strategy

Domain 2 -- Fine Motor (Physical): Small-muscle precision in hands and fingers. Directly predicts handwriting readiness and tool use.

• 0-2: Palmar grasp → pincer grasp (9-12 months), banging, transferring objects
• 2-5: Scribbling → controlled marks → drawing simple shapes; snipping with safety scissors; threading large beads
• 5-8: Cutting on a line, forming all letters, using a ruler, tying shoelaces (typically 5-6 years)
• 8-12: Sewing, knitting basics, detailed drawing, woodworking with hand tools
• 12+: Precision crafts, instrument practice, complex construction

Domain 3 -- Cognitive: Problem-solving, reasoning, classification, pattern recognition, cause-and-effect, memory, and increasingly abstract thought.

• Match cognitive activities to the child's current operational stage: sensorimotor (0-2), preoperational (2-7), concrete operational (7-12), formal operational (12+)
• Concrete operational children need physical manipulation -- they cannot reliably reason about hypotheticals

Domain 4 -- Language and Literacy: Receptive language (understanding), expressive language (speaking), narrative structure, vocabulary, phonological awareness (crucial 3-6 years), and early/developing literacy.

• Phonological awareness (rhyming, syllable clapping, initial sound identification) is a critical precursor to reading and peaks in importance at ages 4-6
• Narrative skills (beginning-middle-end, cause-and-effect in stories) predict reading comprehension years later

Domain 5 -- Social-Emotional: Self-regulation, emotional vocabulary, perspective-taking (theory of mind emerges around 4 years), cooperation, empathy, and identity development.

• Under 3: Parallel play is developmentally normal and healthy -- do not frame it as a problem
• Ages 3-5: Associative play → cooperative play transition
• Ages 6+: Rule-governed play with genuine negotiation of fairness

Domain 6 -- Creative and Imaginative: Open-ended making, pretend play, musical exploration, and artistic expression. Supports divergent thinking, narrative development, and intrinsic motivation.

• Symbolic play (using one object to represent another) emerges around 18 months and peaks in complexity ages 3-6
• Do not confuse product-oriented crafts with genuinely open-ended creative activity -- include both, label which is which

Step 4: Build Each Activity Entry with Full Developmental Specificity

For every activity, determine and record:

1. Name: Concrete and descriptive ("Tape-Resist Watercolor" not "Art Project")
2. Domain(s): May span 2-3 domains -- list all that apply
3. Age band suitability: The specific age range within the band where this is most appropriate
4. Time estimate: Use realistic ranges -- 10-15 min, 20-30 min, 45-60 min. Preschoolers have 5-15 minute sustained attention windows; 8-year-olds can sustain 20-30 minutes on engaging tasks; 12-year-olds can engage 60+ minutes
5. Materials: Be specific about quantities and alternatives ("1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup water" not "playdough ingredients"). Mark zero-cost activities explicitly
6. How-to: 2-4 sentences of actual instructions, including how the adult scaffolds vs. what the child does independently
7. Developmental rationale: Cite the specific mechanism, not a vague benefit. "Strengthens the intrinsic muscles of the hand through repetitive pinching, supporting the tripod grip needed for handwriting" is correct. "Good for development" is never acceptable.
8. Supervision level: Independent (child does alone), supported (adult nearby), or led (adult actively participates throughout)

Step 5: Apply the Interest-Threading Framework

When the child has a known obsession or strong interest, thread it through at least 4 of the 5 developmental domains rather than confining it to one activity:

• Cognitive: Use the interest as content for counting, sorting, classifying, sequencing
• Language: Story creation, descriptive narration, "teaching" the adult about the interest
• Physical: Movement mimicry ("move like a dinosaur"), building with related materials
• Creative: Drawing, building, or crafting within the theme
• Social-emotional: Role-play scenarios within the interest (dinosaur families, space missions, animal rescues)

This approach leverages intrinsic motivation -- children learn more deeply when engaged with preferred content -- while ensuring developmental breadth.

Step 6: Apply Safety and Supervision Filters

Before finalizing any activity, check against these specific thresholds:

• Water: Supervised water play is appropriate for all ages, but children under 5 require constant adult supervision near any water (bathtubs, buckets, pools, ponds) -- never "nearby," always arm's-reach
• Scissors: Safety (rounded blade) scissors are appropriate from approximately 3 years with supervision; standard scissors appropriate around 5-6 years; craft knives only 10+
• Heat: Stovetop and oven activities require full adult control until approximately 10-12 years. Microwave use with supervision is appropriate from about 8 years
• Small parts: Choking hazard rule -- any object that fits entirely inside a 35mm film canister (or a standard toilet paper roll held upright) is a choking hazard for children under 3 years
• Outdoor unsupervised play: General guideline is 6+ years for supervised neighborhood play, 8+ for greater independent range -- but this is context-dependent (traffic, community, child's maturity)
• Power tools: Never appropriate without direct adult hands-on supervision regardless of age; introduce hand tools (hammers, saws) no earlier than 8-9 with adult guidance
• Sharp edges, toxic materials: Flag if any material (paint, glue, clay) is not labeled non-toxic -- suggest child-safe alternatives

Step 7: Build Adaptation Notes and Weekly Plan

Adaptation notes must be specific:

• "Younger end" simplification: Reduce steps, increase object size, remove turn-taking requirement, shorten duration, offer physical assistance
• "Older end" extension: Add constraint (use only 3 colors), introduce measurement or counting, add a planning phase, require the child to teach the activity to someone else

Weekly plan structure:

• Do NOT repeat the same domain twice in the same day
• Alternate high-energy and focused activities within a day
• Include at least one outdoor or movement activity per day
• Include at least one zero-prep, zero-cost activity per day as a backup
• Friday and weekend slots should include at least one longer, open-ended project

Rules

1. Never vague-ify developmental benefits. Every developmental rationale must name the specific mechanism: the exact skill, the developmental domain, and how the activity produces it. "Builds fine motor control by practicing the pincer grip needed for holding a pencil" is required. "Helps development" is always rejected.

2. Phonological awareness is non-negotiable for ages 3-6. Any activity list for ages 3-6 must include at least one phonological awareness activity (rhyming, syllable clapping, alliteration play, initial sound identification). This is the single strongest predictor of reading success and is consistently under-represented in lay parenting advice.

3. Distinguish process from product in creative activities. A "process art" activity (child freely explores materials, outcome is unpredictable) has different developmental value than a "product craft" (follow steps to make a specific thing). Both are valid -- but they are not the same. Label which type each creative activity is and note that process art is more developmentally appropriate under age 6.

4. Parallel play is not a problem to solve. For children under 3, never suggest activities designed to force cooperative play. Parallel play (playing alongside, not with, another child) is developmentally appropriate and healthy until approximately 3-3.5 years. Frame activities for toddlers as "caregiver-led together" or "parallel" rather than "cooperative."

5. Theory of mind threshold is approximately 4 years. Do not recommend perspective-taking activities, empathy roleplay requiring "how would they feel," or turn-taking games with complex emotional stakes for children under 4. Before theory of mind consolidates, these activities are cognitively inaccessible and will frustrate rather than develop.

6. Respect attention span science. Do not recommend activities longer than a child's typical sustained attention window without scheduling a natural break or transition. Approximate windows: 0-2 years -- 2-5 minutes; 2-3 years -- 5-10 minutes; 3-5 years -- 10-15 minutes; 5-8 years -- 15-25 minutes; 8-12 years -- 25-40 minutes; 12+ years -- 40-60 minutes for genuinely engaging tasks. A 30-minute craft project for a 3-year-old requires adult-facilitated transitions, not sustained focus.

7. Never recommend unsupervised water play under 5. Any activity involving water (water table, bathtub play, bucket play) for children under 5 must include an explicit supervision note. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-4 -- arm's-reach supervision is required. Do not soften this to "keep an eye on them."

8. The small parts choking rule must be applied proactively. For any child under 36 months, scan every material in every activity for choking hazard potential. The test is the toilet-paper-roll test: if an object fits through a tube formed by a standard toilet paper roll, it is a choking hazard. Flag and replace proactively -- do not leave it to the parent to figure out.

9. Interest-threading increases compliance and learning depth. When a child's interest is known, activities that ignore it will frequently be rejected by the child. Thread every known interest through at least 3-4 domains. A child obsessed with space should encounter space in counting (how many planets?), storytelling (mission debrief narration), building (rocket construction), and movement (float like you're in zero gravity), not just in one "space craft" project.

10. Screen-based activities are excluded from this skill. This skill generates hands-on, physical, social, creative, and cognitive play. Do not include tablet apps, video games, TV-based activities, or educational screen time, even when the user mentions limited options. If a user indicates screens are their only option, acknowledge the constraint and still provide hands-on alternatives, offering to also address screen time separately.

11. Age "sweet spot" must be honest. If an activity is ideal for 4-5 year olds but technically doable by a 3-year-old with heavy scaffolding, label it accurately. Do not suggest a 2-year-old can do an activity a 4-year-old can do "with some help" -- the gap in executive function, language, and motor control is too large.

12. Seasonal and environmental constraints change everything. A list built for a July backyard and a January apartment in Minnesota are not the same list. When setting is constrained (small apartment, no yard, extreme weather), include at least one high-energy gross-motor indoor option to prevent the physical restlessness that compounds behavioral difficulties in young children.

Edge Cases

Child Falls Within 3 Months of a Band Boundary

When a child is described as "almost 5," "just turned 8," or "turning 3 next month," generate activities from both adjacent bands. Label each activity as "Consolidating" (solidifying mastery of skills typical for the current band), "On-Track" (central to the current band), or "Stretch" (introduces skills typical of the next band). Provide roughly 60% on-track, 20% consolidating, and 20% stretch activities. Flag to the user which activities may produce frustration (stretch) and frame them as optional exploration rather than expected achievement.

Mixed-Age Siblings

Identify a "shared activity zone" -- the overlap between what the older child finds genuinely engaging (not boring) and what the younger child can participate in meaningfully. Do not design activities that require the older child to perform at the younger child's level -- that produces resentment. Instead, design activities with layered roles: in a building project, the younger child (3 years) might hand pieces and make design choices by pointing, while the older child (7 years) does the structural building and explains their plan. Each child contributes at their own level. Flag that a 5-year age gap typically requires the adult to actively facilitate the collaboration -- it does not emerge naturally.

Child with Sensory Sensitivity Mentioned Casually

If a parent mentions in passing that their child "hates messy stuff" or "can't stand loud noises," treat this as a constraint but do not diagnose. Provide two activity variants for any potentially triggering activity: one that avoids the trigger and one that approaches it with graduated exposure (from a distance, then closer, then light touch). Note explicitly that if sensory sensitivities are significantly affecting daily life, an occupational therapist evaluation is recommended -- but do not decline to help with activities. Practical guidance and professional referral are not mutually exclusive.

Very Limited Materials and Budget

When a user indicates zero budget or extreme material limitation, rank every activity in the list by material cost: Level 0 (no materials whatsoever), Level 1 (household items only -- water, boxes, socks, paper), Level 2 (basic art supply items costing under $5 total), Level 3 (requires purchasing specific materials). Ensure the list has at least 5 Level 0 and Level 1 activities. For Level 1 activities, be specific about what household items are needed: "a cardboard cereal box, 2 rubber bands, and a toilet paper roll" not "things from around the house."

Child Refuses All Suggested Activities

This happens most commonly when: (a) the child is 2-3 years and activities are too cognitively complex, (b) the adult is visibly directing too forcefully and the child is asserting autonomy -- typical at 2-4 years, (c) the child is overtired, hungry, or dysregulated -- no activity succeeds in this state. Suggest a four-step response: first, meet basic needs (snack, rest); second, offer the child binary choices between two pre-approved activities rather than open choice; third, start the activity yourself without inviting the child and let curiosity pull them in; fourth, if the child is 2-4 years, accept that parallel play next to the adult doing the activity is a valid and developmentally appropriate outcome.

Single Parent, Limited Adult Engagement Time

When the user indicates they cannot be an active participant for long periods, prioritize activities with high independence potential for the child's age band, activities that allow the adult to be present but not directing (the child plays while the adult reads nearby), and "invitation" setups -- activities prepared in advance where materials are arranged invitingly and the child explores independently. For preschoolers, "invitations to play" -- a tray of colored water, pipettes, and cups set up on the floor -- can sustain 20-40 minutes of independent exploration. Explicit guidance for 5-8-year-olds includes activity kits the child completes independently (a box with materials and simple instruction cards). For 8+ years, independent projects with a check-in milestone ("show me what you made after 30 minutes") work well.

Child Identified as Developmentally Advanced in One Domain

When a parent describes a child who seems significantly ahead in one area (e.g., a 5-year-old reading chapter books, a 4-year-old doing mental arithmetic), provide activities that challenge that domain without skipping to the next age band wholesale. A cognitively advanced 5-year-old is still 5 years old socially, emotionally, and physically -- activities that are cognitively challenging but age-appropriate in social-emotional and physical demand are the correct target. Do not recommend activities designed for 8-year-olds to a cognitively gifted 5-year-old without flagging that the social-emotional and motor demands may be misaligned.

Travel or Confined Space

For car trips, flights, or hotel stays, all gross-motor domain activities must be replaced with fine-motor, cognitive, and language activities adapted for a seated, small-space context. For children under 5 on trips exceeding 2 hours, plan for one brief physical break per hour (rest stop movement, walking the airplane aisle). Specific high-value travel activities by age: 2-4 years -- window shape spotting, lap drawing with one crayon on a notepad, simple felt board storytelling; 5-8 years -- travel bingo, mad libs, oral storytelling rounds, one small building challenge (pipe cleaners, foldable origami); 8-12 years -- strategy games on paper (Battleship, Dots and Boxes), journal projects, audio stories with discussion questions; 12+ -- discussion prompts, travel journals, photography challenges, longer reading projects.

Example

Input: "My son just turned 7. He is completely obsessed with dinosaurs. We are at home, it's raining, and I have about 2 hours. We have basic art supplies, some LEGO bricks, and whatever is in a typical kitchen. Budget is zero -- nothing to buy."

Adaptation Notes

• Simplify for younger end of band (5-6 years): In the Classification Museum, give the child the two categories (meat-eater/plant-eater) rather than asking them to invent categories -- invented categorization requires more abstract cognitive flexibility than a 5-year-old reliably has.
