Bee Biology Basics

The Honey Bee Colony

A colony is a superorganism of 20,000-60,000 bees functioning as a single unit.

Queen Bee (One per colony)

• Only sexually mature female
• Lays up to 2,000 eggs per day at peak
• Lives 2-5 years
• Mates once in her life during mating flights
• Produces pheromones that regulate colony behavior

Worker Bees (Female, 20,000-60,000)

• All female, cannot reproduce (usually)
• Live 6 weeks in summer, 4-6 months in winter
• Age-based roles:
  • Days 1-3: Clean cells
  • Days 3-10: Feed larvae (nurse bees)

Drone Bees (Male, 500-2,000)

The Brood Cycle

• Egg (3 days) > Larva (6 days) > Pupa (12 days for workers) > Adult
• Total: 21 days for workers, 16 days for queens, 24 days for drones

How Bees Make Honey

1. Foragers collect nectar from flowers (store in honey stomach)

Langstroth Hive (Most Common)

Top-Bar Hive

• Horizontal design, bars across the top, bees build natural comb
• No heavy lifting (no stacking boxes)
• More natural comb construction (bees choose cell size)
• Harder to extract honey (comb must be crushed)
• Cannot interchange frames with Langstroth
• Good for small-scale, natural beekeeping approach
• Cost: $150-300

Warre Hive

• Vertical like Langstroth but with top bars instead of frames
• Boxes added to the bottom (nadiring) rather than top
• Minimal intervention philosophy
• Less common, fewer resources and mentors available
• Cost: $200-300

Recommendation

For beginners: Langstroth hive. Best educational resources, most mentors use it, standardized equipment, easiest to learn proper management.

Equipment Checklist

Essential Equipment

• Hive: Complete Langstroth (bottom board, 2 deep boxes, frames with foundation, inner cover, outer cover) - $200-350

Getting Started Costs

Why start with two hives: You can compare colonies (is that behavior normal?), transfer resources between them, and if one queen fails, you have eggs from the other colony to raise a new queen.

Where to Get Bees

Package Bees ($150-250)

• 3 lbs of bees (approximately 10,000) with a caged queen
• Installed into prepared hive
• Queen releases from cage over 3-5 days (colony acclimates to her pheromones)
• Available spring (March-May depending on region)
• Order by January/February (they sell out)

Nucleus Colony ("Nuc") ($175-300)

• 5 frames with established brood, honey, pollen, and a laying queen
• Stronger start than a package
• Already functioning as a colony
• Transfers directly into your hive
• Generally recommended over packages for beginners

Catching a Swarm (Free)

• Swarm lists through local beekeeping associations
• Experienced beekeeper assistance recommended for first swarm
• Free bees, but genetics and health unknown
• Swarming season: Spring (March-June)

Seasonal Management

Spring (March-May)

• First inspection: Check for queen (look for eggs - tiny grains of rice standing in cells)
• Feed: 1:1 sugar syrup if stores are low (stimulates brood production)
• Expand: Add frames/boxes as population grows
• Swarm management: Inspect every 7-10 days for queen cells (peanut-shaped cells = swarm preparation)
• Splits: Divide strong colonies to prevent swarming and increase hive count
• Install new colonies: Package bees or nucs

Summer (June-August)

• Honey flow: Primary nectar collection period
• Add supers: Honey supers go on when bees fill frames
• Monitor: Check for queen, brood pattern, disease signs
• Water: Ensure water source available near hives
• Heat management: Ensure ventilation, shade if in extreme heat
• Harvest: First honey harvest possible in late summer of second year (do not harvest first year in most cases)

Fall (September-November)

• Assess stores: Colony needs 60-90 lbs of honey for winter (varies by climate)
• Feed: 2:1 sugar syrup if stores are insufficient
• Varroa treatment: Critical treatment window (see pest management below)

Winter (December-February)

• Mouse guard: Prevent mice from nesting in warm hive

Inspection Routines

When to Inspect

• Every 7-10 days during active season (spring through fall)
• Choose warm, sunny, calm days (above 60F)
• Midday is best (many foragers are out, fewer bees in hive)
• Brief inspections: 10-15 minutes per hive

Inspection Procedure

1. Light smoker (use natural fuel: pine needles, burlap, cotton)
2. Approach hive from the side or rear (not blocking the entrance)
3. Puff 2-3 gentle smoke puffs at entrance, wait 30 seconds
4. Remove outer and inner covers (puff smoke if needed)
5. Start with outer frames, work toward center
6. Lift frames gently, hold over the hive (queen could fall off)
7. Look for:
   • Queen or fresh eggs: Confirm queen is present and laying
   • Brood pattern: Solid pattern = healthy queen; spotty = problems
   • Population: Growing, stable, or declining?
   • Food stores: Honey and pollen present?
   • Disease signs: Unusual brood appearance, foul smell, deformed wings
   • Queen cells: Swarm cells (bottom of frame) or supersedure cells (middle of frame)
   • Pests: Varroa mites, hive beetles, wax moths

What NOT to Do During Inspections

• Do not crush bees (especially the queen) - move slowly and deliberately
• Do not bang frames or boxes together
• Do not breathe on the bees (CO2 agitates them)
• Do not wear strong fragrances or dark clothing (bees associate dark = bears = threat)
• Do not inspect in cold, rainy, or windy conditions

Honey Harvest

When to Harvest

• Frames are at least 80% capped (wax cap over each cell)
• Only harvest surplus - leave enough for the bees (60-90 lbs minimum for winter)
• First-year colonies typically produce little to no surplus
• Most harvests happen late summer to early fall

Harvest Process (Langstroth)

1. Remove honey supers from hive (bee escape boards, fume boards, or brush bees off)
2. Bring frames to extraction area (clean, screened from bees)
3. Uncap cells with uncapping knife or fork
4. Place frames in extractor (manual or electric centrifuge)
5. Spin to extract honey
6. Filter through strainer (removes wax bits)
7. Let honey settle in bottling bucket (air bubbles rise, 24-48 hours)
8. Bottle in clean jars
9. Return wet supers to hive for bees to clean

Yields

• Average first-year surplus: 0-30 lbs (often none)
• Average established colony: 30-60 lbs per year
• Exceptional colonies/years: 100+ lbs
• Depends heavily on local flora, weather, and colony health

Disease and Pest Management

Varroa Mites (Most Critical Threat)

• Parasitic mite that feeds on bee fat bodies and transmits viruses
• Present in virtually every colony worldwide
• If left untreated, colony will die within 1-3 years
• Monitoring: Alcohol wash or sugar shake test (count mites per 300 bees)
  • Below 2 mites/100 bees: Low level, monitor
  • 2-3 mites/100 bees: Treat soon
  • Above 3 mites/100 bees: Treat immediately
• Treatment options:
  • Oxalic acid (vaporization or dribble): Organic, effective, temperature-dependent
  • Formic acid (Formic Pro, MAQS): Kills mites in capped brood, temperature-sensitive

• Treat in late summer/early fall to protect winter bees

American Foulbrood (AFB)

• Bacterial disease that kills larvae
• Symptoms: Sunken, perforated cappings; ropy brown residue when toothpick inserted in cell; foul smell
• Extremely serious: Spores survive decades
• In most states, infected equipment must be burned (report to state apiary inspector)
• No treatment that saves the colony; prevention through hygienic bee stock

Nosema

• Microsporidian gut parasite
• Causes dysentery (fecal streaks on hive front)
• Weakens colony, especially in spring
• Prevention: Good ventilation, strong colonies, young queens

Small Hive Beetle

• Dark beetle that lays eggs in hive; larvae destroy comb
• Common in southern US
• Management: Strong colonies (bees control beetle population), beetle traps, reduce hive space

Wax Moths

• Larvae tunnel through comb, especially in weak colonies or stored equipment
• Strong colonies handle wax moths easily
• Store empty supers in cold or with paramoth crystals (not in the hive)

Local Regulations

Before Getting Bees, Check:

• City/county ordinances on beekeeping (many cities now allow it, some restrict hive numbers or placement)
