Bereavement Support Framework

Losing someone is one of life's most difficult experiences, and the practical demands that follow can feel overwhelming when grief is fresh. This framework covers the logistical and administrative tasks that need attention after a death, organized by urgency and timeline. It is not grief therapy and does not attempt to guide emotional processing. For ongoing grief support, a licensed therapist or grief counselor can provide the individualized care that goes beyond what any checklist offers. The frameworks below are intended to reduce the logistical burden so the bereaved can focus on what matters most.

When to Use

Use this skill when:

• User asks about what needs to happen after someone dies (practical steps)
• User wants a checklist for managing affairs after a death in the family
• User asks about notification lists, funeral arrangements, or estate administration tasks
• User wants to organize practical support for a grieving friend or family member
• User needs help tracking the administrative tasks that follow a death

Do NOT use this skill when:

• User needs grief counseling or emotional support processing (therapist needed)
• User asks about estate law, probate process, or will interpretation (attorney needed)
• User needs help with life insurance claims disputes (insurance advocate or attorney)
• User asks about end-of-life medical decisions (physician and ethics consultation)
• User wants help writing a eulogy or obituary content (writing skills)

Process

1. Manage the immediate aftermath (first 24-48 hours). These tasks are time-sensitive:

   If Death Occurs at Home:

   • Call 911 or the hospice nurse if the person was under hospice care (hospice pronounces death and manages initial steps)
   • Do NOT call the funeral home until after official pronouncement
   • If the person was an organ donor, contact the organ procurement organization (noted on driver's license or donor registry)
   • Once death is officially pronounced, contact the funeral home or mortuary to arrange transport

   If Death Occurs at a Hospital or Facility:

   • The facility handles pronouncement and initial documentation
   • Ask the facility for guidance on next steps and timing
   • Provide the funeral home's name and contact to the facility for coordination

   Immediate Notifications (First 24 Hours):

   • Immediate family members (in person or by phone, not text)
   • Close friends of the deceased
   • Employer of the deceased (if applicable)
   • Employer of the bereaved (request time off)
   • Religious or spiritual leader (if desired for support and ceremony planning)
   • Attorney (if the deceased had one, especially if a will or trust exists)

   Do Not Handle Yet:

   • Financial accounts and transfers (wait for death certificate)
   • Clearing out the home or belongings
   • Making major personal decisions (moving, job changes)

2. Make arrangement decisions (days 1-3). These decisions are needed quickly but should not be rushed:

   Working with the Funeral Home:

   • Ask for an itemized price list before agreeing to anything (required by law to provide)
   • Compare costs if time allows (prices vary significantly between providers)
   • Understand what is required vs. what is optional (many add-on services are not necessary)
   • Ask about veterans' benefits if the deceased served in the military
   • Determine how many certified copies of the death certificate are needed (typically 10-15 copies -- one for each financial institution, insurance company, government agency)

3. Collect essential documents (days 1-7):

4. Manage notifications and account closures (weeks 1-4). Work through these systematically once death certificates arrive:

   Financial Notifications:

   • Social Security Administration (report death; inquire about survivor benefits)
   • Banks and credit unions (all accounts -- checking, savings, CDs)
   • Investment and brokerage firms
   • Retirement account administrators (401k, IRA, pension)
   • Life insurance companies (file claims with certified death certificate)
   • Mortgage company
   • Credit card companies (close accounts, notify of death)
   • Loan servicers (student loans, personal loans, auto loans)

   Government and Administrative:

   • Department of Motor Vehicles (cancel driver's license, transfer vehicle title)
   • Voter registration (cancel)
   • Postal service (forward mail to executor or surviving family member)
   • Passport agency (cancel passport to prevent identity theft)
   • Veterans Administration (if applicable -- burial benefits, flag, headstone)

   Subscriptions and Services:

   • Utilities (transfer or cancel: electric, gas, water, phone, internet)
   • Cell phone plan (cancel or transfer number)
   • Email accounts (close or memorialize, depending on provider)
   • Social media accounts (memorialize or close)

   Insurance:

5. Support the bereaved person (for friends and family providing support):

   What helps most:

   • Offer specific help, not open-ended offers ("I am bringing dinner Tuesday" beats "Let me know if you need anything")
   • Show up consistently, not just in the first week (grief continues long after the casseroles stop)
   • Handle visible tasks without being asked (mow the lawn, take out the trash, walk the dog)
   • Remember important dates: the anniversary, the birthday, the holiday season

   What to avoid:

   • Saying "They are in a better place" or "Everything happens for a reason" (minimizes the loss)
   • Comparing losses ("I know how you feel, my dog died last year")
   • Putting a timeline on grief ("It has been 6 months, you should be feeling better")
   • Asking "How are you?" and expecting "Fine" (ask "How are you doing today?" and accept an honest answer)

6. Manage the ongoing administrative transition (months 1-6):

   Estate Administration (with attorney guidance):

   • File the will with the probate court (if required in your jurisdiction)
   • Executor begins gathering and managing estate assets
   • Pay outstanding debts and bills from estate funds
   • File the deceased's final tax return (due by April 15 of the following year)
   • File estate tax return if required (depends on estate value and jurisdiction)
   • Distribute assets per will or intestacy laws

   Longer-Term Transitions:

   • Transfer property titles (real estate, vehicles)
   • Update beneficiaries on your own accounts (life insurance, retirement, bank)
   • Update your own will and estate documents if the deceased was named in them
   • Close or transfer shared accounts (joint bank accounts, shared memberships)
   • Update contact information with all providers to reflect new point of contact

   Identity Theft Prevention:

   • Notify all three credit bureaus to place a deceased alert on the credit file
   • Monitor the deceased's credit report for 12 months for unauthorized activity
   • Shred or securely destroy sensitive documents after they are no longer needed
   • Cancel the deceased's email if it is not being monitored (prevents phishing)

Rules

Edge Cases

• Unexpected or sudden death: When the death is sudden (accident, heart attack, violence), the bereaved may be in shock during the period when time-sensitive decisions are needed. Priority: identify one or two people who can handle logistics while the bereaved processes the immediate shock. Push arrangement decisions to day 2-3 if possible. If the death is under investigation (accident, crime), additional coordination with law enforcement is required before funeral arrangements can proceed.

• Death with no will or estate plan: When no will exists, the estate is distributed according to the jurisdiction's intestacy laws. The court appoints an administrator (typically the surviving spouse or next of kin). The process is longer and more expensive than with a will. Attorney consultation is especially critical in this scenario. Priority: file for administrator appointment promptly to gain legal authority to manage the estate.

• Death of a child or young person: The logistics differ: there may be no estate to administer, but there are still accounts to close, belongings to manage, and notifications to make. The bereaved (parents) are likely in acute grief that makes any logistics feel impossible. The support team should handle as much as possible. Include: canceling school enrollment, notifying the child's social circle and their parents, and managing social media (friends may post without realizing). Professional grief support is not optional in this scenario -- it is essential and should begin within the first week if the bereaved is willing.

• Distant or estranged family: When family relationships are complicated (estrangement, conflict, distant relatives who surface after the death), the logistics become interpersonal minefields. The will (if it exists) is the authoritative document for asset distribution. If there is no will, intestacy laws apply regardless of relationship quality. The executor or administrator makes logistical decisions; they do not need consensus from all family members to proceed. If conflict is severe, an estate attorney can serve as a neutral party.

• Supporting someone long-term (months after the death): Most support disappears within 2-4 weeks, but grief persists for months or years. For long-term support: mark the anniversary, birthday, and holidays on your calendar and reach out on those days. Continue to mention the deceased by name (the bereaved wants to know their person is not skipped). Offer practical help during the first holiday season (this is often the hardest period). If you notice persistent inability to function (not eating, not leaving the house, substance use changes) after 6+ months, gently suggest professional grief support.

First, you do not have to handle everything alone, and you do not have to handle everything today. Below is an organized plan that separates the truly urgent tasks from those that can wait. The goal is to prevent anything from falling through the cracks while giving you and your family space to grieve.

Today and Tomorrow (24-48 Hours)

Completed or In Progress:

• Death has been officially pronounced (hospital, hospice, or coroner)
• Funeral home has been contacted for transport

Notifications (Today -- Phone Calls, Not Texts):

• Immediate family: siblings, surviving parent (if applicable), spouse/partner

Delegate Now: Identify one person for each of these roles:

• Logistics helper: Manages food deliveries, coordinates family travel, handles pet care
• Research helper: Looks up funeral home pricing, veterans' benefits (if applicable), and death certificate ordering

Days 2-3: Arrangement Decisions

Before Meeting with Funeral Home:

• Check if Dad had pre-arranged funeral plans (check his files, ask his attorney, ask if he mentioned wishes)
• Check for a will (may specify burial/cremation preferences)
• Gather input from siblings and family on service preferences
• Determine budget for services

At the Funeral Home:

• Financial advisor: If Dad's estate includes investments, property, or complex assets, a financial advisor can help with the transition alongside the attorney.
