Repair vs Conservation Decision

REPAIR (functional, good for reading copies):
  Goal: Make the book usable and attractive
  Approach: May use modern materials, structurally sound

CONSERVATION (preserve original, minimal intervention):
  Goal: Stabilize and prevent further deterioration

but you can't undo irreversible damage.

Common Repairs

Reattaching Loose Pages

For individual loose pages:
  Materials: PVA glue (acid-free), small brush, wax paper

  1. Apply a thin line of PVA to the inner edge of the loose page
  2. Align the page carefully in its correct position
  3. Press firmly with a bone folder along the spine edge
  4. Place wax paper on both sides of the repaired page
  5. Close the book and weight it for 30 minutes
  6. Remove wax paper after glue is fully dry

For multiple consecutive loose pages:
  Consider: Is the sewing broken? Pages may need re-sewing.
  Tip-in method works for 1-5 pages; more than that needs structural repair.

For paperback (perfect binding) with pages falling out:
  1. Apply PVA along the spine edge of the text block
  2. Fan pages to work glue between them
  3. Clamp and let dry 4-6 hours
  4. This is a temporary fix; perfect bindings are inherently weak

Spine Repair

Cracked or broken hinge (cover separating from text block):

  Materials: Japanese tissue, PVA glue, bone folder, wax paper

  1. Cut Japanese tissue strip 2 inches wide, length of spine
  2. Mix PVA slightly thinned with water (consistency of cream)
  3. Apply glue to one half of the tissue strip
  4. Slide the glued half under the cover, pressing into the hinge
  5. Apply glue to the other half
  6. Press onto the first endpaper/flyleaf
  7. Insert wax paper and close the book
  8. Weight for 24 hours

  For a neater repair: Use matching book cloth instead of tissue
  over the Japanese tissue for a clean appearance.

Loose spine (hollow spine detached from text block):
  1. Carefully peel the spine from the cover
  2. Apply PVA to the spine of the text block
  3. Reattach the spine material, smoothing with bone folder
  4. Reinforce with mull (open-weave fabric) if needed
  5. Reattach to cover boards
  6. Weight and dry for 24 hours

Page Repair

Torn pages:
  Materials: Japanese tissue (light weight), wheat starch paste or PVA

  1. Place torn page on a clean, flat surface
  2. Align tear edges carefully
  3. Cut Japanese tissue slightly larger than the tear
  4. Apply thin paste to the tissue
  5. Place tissue over the tear, pressing gently with bone folder
  6. Place between sheets of wax paper
  7. Weight until dry

  For clean tears: tissue on one side is sufficient
  For ragged tears: tissue on both sides may be needed
  Always use the thinnest tissue that provides adequate strength

Foxing (brown spots on pages):
  Mild: Gently erase with white vinyl eraser (test first)
  Moderate: Hydrogen peroxide (2%) applied with cotton swab (test first)
  Severe: Professional treatment (deacidification bath)
  Prevention: Store in low-humidity environment, good air circulation

Leather Book Care

Leather Condition Assessment

Healthy leather:
  - Supple and flexible
  - Color even and rich
  - Responds to treatment with conditioner

Dry leather:
  - Stiff and cracks when flexed
  - Color faded or chalky
  - Needs conditioning before any repair

Red rot (powdery leather deterioration):
  - Surface crumbles to red/brown powder
  - Often on 19th-century books
  - CANNOT be reversed, only stabilized
  - Treatment: Cellugel or Klucel-G consolidation
  - This is a serious condition -- consider professional help

Treatment for stable dry leather:
  1. Clean gently with dry soft cloth (remove surface dust)

  Air: Clean, good circulation (prevents mold)

Shelving:
  - Store books upright (spine down puts strain on binding)
  - Don't pack too tightly (should slide out easily)
  - Don't leave too loose (covers warp without support)
  - Use bookends for partial shelves
  - Large/heavy books: store flat, no more than 3 high
  - Very large books (folio): store flat, never upright

DON'T:
  - Store in attics (temperature extremes)
  - Store in basements (humidity, flooding risk)
  - Store in sealed containers (traps moisture)
  - Stack books horizontally without limit (crushes lower books)
  - Use rubber bands on books (degrade, stain, cause damage)
