When to Use

Use this skill when:

• A user describes a specific recurring situation where their limits are being crossed -- for example, a parent who drops by unannounced, a friend who borrows money and does not repay it, or a partner who reads their private messages
• A user says they cannot say no without feeling overwhelming guilt, obligation, or fear of abandonment, and wants practical tools to change that pattern
• A user needs specific language scripts to communicate a boundary they already know they want but cannot find words for
• A user has set a boundary verbally and the other person ignored it, and the user needs guidance on enforcement and consequences
• A user asks how to protect their time, emotional energy, physical space, or private information from being routinely violated by people they care about
• A user is navigating a significant life change (new baby, chronic illness, career shift, moving out) that requires renegotiating existing relationship dynamics and expectations
• A user wants to distinguish between a genuine boundary and a wish that someone would behave differently, and needs help identifying what they can actually control

Do NOT use when:

• The user describes fear of physical harm, intimidation, or coercion in response to asserting themselves -- use safety planning guidance and professional resources instead (this skill's enforcement frameworks can be dangerous in coercive control situations)
• The user is asking whether their relationship constitutes abuse, whether they are codependent, or whether a pattern is "normal" -- these are clinical assessments requiring therapeutic evaluation, not boundary scripts
• The user needs workplace-specific boundary setting with a manager, HR situation, or professional context -- the relational dynamics, power structures, and stakes differ substantially and require professional communication frameworks
• The user wants to process deep emotional wounds from boundary violations in the past -- this is therapeutic territory; acknowledge the emotional content and recommend counseling while offering practical support if appropriate
• The user's underlying goal is to control or change the other person's personality, values, or fundamental nature -- boundaries govern behavior, not character
• The user is in a legal dispute with the other person, or the boundary violation may constitute a legal matter (stalking, harassment, financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult) -- recommend appropriate legal resources
• The user is describing a situation involving a minor child's mental health or behavioral patterns -- parenting and child development require different frameworks

Process

Step 1: Gather the Situation Clearly Before Offering Solutions

Before generating any scripts or plans, ask targeted questions that surface what you actually need to know. Skipping intake produces generic scripts that do not fit the specific relationship.

• Who is the relationship with? The strategies for a parent, a sibling, a romantic partner, a close friend, and an in-law differ substantially. Each carries different power dynamics, cultural expectations, and emotional stakes.
• What is the specific, recurring behavior? Not "she's disrespectful" -- that is a conclusion. Push for the observable behavior: "She interrupts me to contradict my parenting choices in front of the kids, approximately two to three times per visit."
• What has the user already tried? Hinting, avoiding, accommodating, direct requests, and prior boundary attempts each represent different starting points. A user who has already had a direct conversation needs enforcement language, not setting language.
• What does the user fear will happen if they set this boundary? The feared consequence shapes the entire plan. Fear of abandonment, fear of conflict, fear of family gossip, fear of losing access to grandchildren -- each requires different anticipatory framing.
• What does the user actually want the relationship to look like? Some users want to keep the relationship close but change one dynamic. Others want distance. Others are considering whether the relationship is worth continuing. The goal shapes the tone and firmness of the scripts.
• Is the other person's behavior intentional and repeated, or occasional and likely unaware? First-time or oblivious violations call for softer, educating scripts. Repeated, pattern violations after multiple attempts call for consequence language.

Step 2: Define the Boundary Using the Behavior-Impact-Action Framework

Many people confuse wishes, requests, and boundaries. Help the user find the actual boundary -- the one they can actually enforce -- using three specific components.

• Behavior (observable and specific): The behavior must be something that any outside observer could confirm occurred. "Being controlling" is not observable. "Calling me more than four times a day without an agreed reason" is. The more specific the behavior, the clearer the script and the harder it is to deflect or deny.
• Impact (first-person, non-blaming): Describe what happens for the user -- emotionally, practically, physically -- when the behavior occurs. "I feel criticized and my confidence in my parenting drops for days after" is impact. "You're undermining me" is blame. The impact statement is what makes the communication human and non-combative.
• Action (what the user will do, not what the other person must do): This is the definitional difference between a boundary and a demand. The action must be within the user's sole control: leaving the room, ending a phone call, shortening a visit, not attending an event, reducing contact frequency. The action does not require the other person's cooperation to execute.
• A complete boundary sounds like: "When [specific behavior] happens, I feel [impact]. If it happens again, I will [specific action the user takes]." This structure can be delivered as a statement or folded into natural language -- the structure matters, not the exact phrasing.
• Help the user test their action for control: "Can you actually do this without the other person's agreement?" If the answer is no, the action needs revision.
• Distinguish between informational boundaries (sharing what you will do in advance) and enacted boundaries (simply doing the action without announcing it). Sometimes announcing is valuable; sometimes it invites negotiation. Both are valid.

Step 3: Identify the Type of Boundary Needed

Different categories of boundaries require meaningfully different scripts and enforcement structures. Correctly identifying the type prevents mismatches between the problem and the plan.

• Physical space and body: Who can enter a room, touch the user, or be present in their home. These are the most concrete to enforce -- physical presence or absence is binary.
• Time and availability: When the user will be reachable, how long visits will last, what events they will or will not attend. Time boundaries are commonly violated by family members who assume unlimited access. Enforcement tools include: not answering after a set hour, ending calls at a set duration, establishing visit end times.
• Emotional labor: The obligation to manage others' feelings, absorb their venting, process their crises, or perform constant reassurance. Emotional labor boundaries are among the hardest to enforce because they feel unkind. Scripts must normalize the limit without sounding cold.
• Information and privacy: What the user shares about their finances, health, relationships, reproductive choices, or personal decisions. The key technique here is redirection without explanation. "That's something I'm keeping private" requires no justification.
• Decision autonomy: The right to make choices about parenting, career, housing, diet, relationships, and lifestyle without input, commentary, or pressure from others. These violations are often framed by the other person as "just caring," making them particularly guilt-inducing.
• Financial: Loan requests, expectations of financial support, or attempts to access the user's resources. These require the clearest enforcement because financial violations have concrete downstream consequences.
• Once the type is identified, the enforcement plan can match: ending a call is the tool for phone-based violations; leaving a room is the tool for in-person commentary; reducing contact is the tool for persistent, multi-channel violations.

Step 4: Build the Communication Script

The communication script has four distinct parts that serve different moments in the conversation. Skipping any part leaves the user unprepared.

• The Setting Statement (proactive, calm, private): The most effective boundary conversations happen proactively -- before the next incident -- in a calm, private moment, not during a conflict. The statement should be brief (under 60 seconds spoken), direct, and warm. It should not include a catalog of past offenses, a character indictment of the other person, or a lengthy justification. It states the behavior, briefly names the impact, and states the limit or what the user needs.
• The Explanation Response (optional, one sentence): If the other person asks "why," the user can respond once, briefly, without entering into a negotiation. The explanation is not an apology and does not invite a counter-argument. After one explanation, further "why" questions can be met with: "I've shared my reason. The limit still stands."
• Pushback Response (firmness without escalation): The most common pushback types are: denial ("I never do that"), minimization ("You're being too sensitive"), guilt induction ("After everything I've done for you"), victimhood ("I can't believe you'd say this to me"), and deflection ("You're the one who..."). For each type, prepare a short response that does not engage the content of the pushback but restates the limit. A key phrase: "I understand you see it differently. This is still what I need."
• The Closing: End the setting conversation with forward-looking language when possible. "I'm telling you this because the relationship matters to me and I want us to be able to spend time together comfortably." This is not capitulation -- it is framing that makes the boundary an act of investment in the relationship, not an attack on it.
• Tone guidance: scripts should be delivered in a flat, steady tone -- not cold, not emotional. Rehearsing out loud significantly reduces the voice trembling and emotional flooding that make the actual delivery harder. Suggest this to users who express anxiety about delivery.

Step 5: Build the Enforcement Plan

A stated boundary without consistent follow-through is not a boundary -- it is a preference that the other person has learned can be ignored. Enforcement is what makes the boundary real.

• Enforcement works in graduated levels: The first follow-through after a violation should be a calm, direct restatement: "This is what I asked you not to do. I'm going to [action] now." No lecture. No re-litigating the original conversation. Short. Consistent.
• The action is immediate. If the boundary is "I will leave the room if this topic comes up," the user leaves the room the first time the topic comes up -- not the third time, not after a warning. Delayed enforcement trains the other person that multiple violations are allowed before the consequence occurs.
• Consequences escalate if violations persist. A reasonable escalation ladder: (1) restate and redirect at the moment, (2) end the interaction (leave, hang up, end visit early), (3) reduce frequency or duration of contact, (4) require a different medium for communication (written rather than phone), (5) pause contact for a defined period. Each level is explicitly communicated as it is implemented, not applied silently.
• Distinguish between unintentional slips and deliberate testing. Someone who is genuinely trying and occasionally forgets gets a gentler redirect. Someone who immediately returns to the prohibited behavior after a restatement is testing the boundary. The user's calibration of enforcement should match the apparent intent.
• The other person does not have to agree with or like the boundary for it to be enforced. Their anger, hurt, or protest is information about their feelings -- it is not a veto. Help users separate "they're upset" from "I did something wrong." These often feel identical but are not.
• Enforcement does not require explanation every time. After the initial boundary has been communicated, enforcing it can be brief and wordless: hanging up a call, leaving a room, not responding to a message. Over-explaining each instance reinvites the original debate.

Step 6: Address Guilt, Cultural Context, and Relational Stakes

Boundary setting fails most often not because of lack of words, but because of the user's internal experience during and after the conversation. Skipping this step produces technically correct scripts that the user cannot deploy.

• Guilt is a near-universal response to setting a boundary with someone you love, especially for the first time. Help the user understand that guilt in this context is a conditioned response -- it reflects that a pattern is changing, not that the boundary is wrong. The emotional discomfort of changing a long-standing dynamic and the ethical wrongness of hurting someone are not the same thing, even though they feel identical.
• In collectivist family cultures -- many East Asian, South Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern, African, and Southern and Eastern European cultural contexts -- individual limits can be perceived as selfishness, family betrayal, or ingratitude. This does not mean boundaries cannot be set; it means the framing and language matter more. Emphasize relationship investment in the language ("because I want to be able to be close to you") rather than individual autonomy ("because I have a right to"). Acknowledge the cultural weight explicitly: "I know this feels different from how our family usually operates."
• Enmeshed family systems (families where individual identity is not well-differentiated) will often respond to boundaries with escalated pressure, family triangulation (recruiting other members to pressure the user), and emotional crises designed to restore the old pattern. This is not evidence that the boundary was wrong -- it is evidence of how deeply embedded the old pattern was. Provide specific language for triangulation: "I know [other family member] has spoken to you about this. I'm handling this directly with [person]. I'd like you to let us work it out between us."
• Acknowledge that the relationship may change. Some people set limits and the relationship becomes closer because the resentment that was accumulating is released. Others find that the relationship cannot survive the change. Both outcomes are possible, and neither can be controlled. The goal is not a guaranteed outcome -- it is honest self-disclosure and consistent self-protection.
• The user's grief about what the relationship is, versus what they hoped it would be, is real and valid. Boundaries sometimes surface the painful recognition that the other person is not capable of or willing to offer what the user needs. That recognition is painful and should be named.

Step 7: Assemble the Boundary Plan and Confirm Fit

After working through the above steps, assemble the complete plan and check it against the user's specific situation before delivering it.

• Confirm that the behavior in the plan matches what the user actually described -- not a paraphrase that has softened or distorted it.
• Confirm that the action in each enforcement step is genuinely within the user's control given their living situation, relationship structure, and resources.
• Check whether the user has a partner or co-parent who needs to be aligned -- a mother-in-law boundary set without the partner's participation, for example, is significantly harder to maintain and can create a new conflict inside the partnership.
• Ask whether there are any structural constraints: shared finances, shared housing, dependence on the other person for childcare or eldercare, or custody agreements that affect what enforcement is actually possible.
• Note any upcoming high-stakes events (weddings, holidays, medical situations) that should inform the timing of the initial conversation.
• Deliver the plan with acknowledgment that it will feel harder in the moment than it looks on paper, and that the first attempt may be imperfect -- imperfect enforcement is still enforcement, and the user can re-calibrate.

Boundary conversations, especially with people the user loves, are emotionally taxing even when they go well.

Rules

1. A boundary is defined by what the user will do, not by what the other person must stop doing. Any "boundary" that requires the other person's cooperation to function is actually a request. If the user cannot execute the consequence on their own, the action step must be revised before the plan is complete.

2. Never use clinical labels for the other person. Do not describe someone as narcissistic, toxic, emotionally abusive, coercively controlling, or codependent in the boundary plan. These are clinical assessments requiring professional evaluation. Describe the observable behavior and the user's response to it. "She calls repeatedly after you have said goodnight and need to sleep" is specific and actionable. "She is a narcissist who doesn't respect you" is a clinical inference that inflames rather than helps.

3. Over-justification invites debate. The user's explanation of a boundary should be given once, briefly. Every additional explanation signals that the boundary is negotiable. Scripts must be designed to say the reason once and then close the loop: "That's my reason. The limit still stands."

4. Enforcement must be immediate and consistent from the first violation. Delayed or inconsistent enforcement teaches the other person that multiple violations are allowed before consequences apply. If the user says "I'll leave if this keeps up" and does not leave until the fourth violation, the actual rule they have established is "four violations are acceptable." Scripts must be designed around first-violation follow-through.

5. If the user describes fear of physical retaliation, escalated intimidation, or coercive control as a reason they have not set limits, stop and do not provide boundary scripts. Boundaries assume a relationship where emotional discomfort is the worst probable consequence. In coercive control situations, safety planning takes precedence. Provide appropriate safety resources and note explicitly that the enforcement steps in this skill are not designed for relationships involving coercion.

6. Partner alignment is not optional in co-parenting and in-law situations. When the boundary involves a partner's family of origin, the most effective first step is aligning with the partner -- not confronting the family member directly. A boundary set by one partner without the other's knowledge or agreement creates a new conflict inside the partnership. Identify whether partner alignment is needed before scripting the conversation with the third party.

7. The other person does not have to agree with, understand, or accept the boundary for it to be in effect. Their protest, hurt, anger, or denial does not invalidate the limit. Users frequently abandon limits the moment the other person expresses displeasure, interpreting emotional pushback as evidence that they have done something wrong. This must be explicitly addressed in the anticipation section.

8. Distinguish between rigid boundaries (walls) and permeable ones (healthy). Rigid boundary systems that block all vulnerability, need expression, or closeness are not the goal. Healthy limits protect specific behaviors while allowing genuine relationship. If the user's stated "boundary" would effectively end all connection, help them examine whether the goal is protection or exit, and whether the situation calls for professional support.

9. Cultural framing is not a reason to abandon a boundary -- it is a reason to adjust the language. In collectivist, high-context, or honor-culture family systems, framing limits as individual rights tends to backfire. Reframe in relational terms: "I need this in order to stay close to you" performs the same boundary function but is received very differently than "I have a right to this." Adjust scripts accordingly without suggesting the user must conform to cultural norms that are genuinely harming them.

10. Timing matters. The worst time to set a boundary for the first time is during the violation itself, when both parties are emotionally activated. Scripts should specify the timing of the initial setting conversation: calm, private, proactive -- ideally during a neutral interaction, not in the immediate aftermath of an incident. The exception is the enacted boundary (leaving the room, ending the call) which is always executed at the moment of violation.

11. Do not project emotions the user has not named. If the user describes a frustrating situation but does not say they feel hurt, do not insert "you feel hurt and betrayed" into the plan. Work with the emotional language the user actually uses, or check in with them about what they are experiencing before naming it.

12. Acknowledge that the relationship may change as a result of limits being set. This acknowledgment is not pessimism -- it is honesty. Some relationships deepen because the resentment that was accumulating is resolved. Others cannot accommodate the change and will contract or end. The user deserves to make this choice knowing both possibilities.

Edge Cases

1. The Adult Child Setting a Limit with a Parent Who Has Never Accepted One

This is the most emotionally complex boundary scenario and the most common. The power dynamic has been in place for decades. The parent may genuinely not understand why their child's adulthood warrants independent decision-making, particularly in cultures where parental authority is considered permanent.

Key handling guidance:

• Acknowledge the historical weight directly: "This is one of the hardest boundary conversations to have because the power dynamic has existed your entire life."
• The script must be respectful in tone while being completely clear in substance. These are not in conflict.
• Expect the parent to escalate: crying, invoking sacrifice, threatening to tell other family members, or withdrawing affection. Each of these is a protest behavior, not evidence that the limit is wrong.
• The enforcement plan must account for the fact that the parent controls access to other family relationships in many cases. Triangulation (recruiting siblings, the other parent, extended family) is common. Provide the specific triangulation script: "Mom has spoken to you about this -- I understand. This is something I'm working out directly with her, and I'd really appreciate you letting us handle it between us."
• The user may need to explicitly mourn the parent-child relationship they wished they had while still setting the limit with the parent they actually have.

2. The User Needs to Set a Limit Inside a Shared Living Space

Enforcement is structurally different when the user cannot physically leave the relationship context. "Leave the situation" as an enforcement action has a different meaning when you share a home.

• Focus exclusively on what the user can control within the shared space: entering a different room, using headphones, establishing a specific area as their own, setting designated quiet hours, ending conversations by walking away.
• The enforcement actions should not require the other person to move or vacate -- that introduces a power struggle that will rarely resolve in the user's favor unless there is a legal framework.
• For partners who share a home: the limit-setting conversation may itself need to include a structural request (a specific room is the user's alone during certain hours). Frame this as a mutual need, not a punishment.
• If the user shares a home with a family member (not a romantic partner) and enforcement is truly impossible, help them assess whether the living arrangement itself is the primary issue that needs addressing.

3. The User Has Set the Limit Multiple Times and It Is Consistently Ignored

When a user has already had multiple clear conversations and the other person continues the behavior, the conversation phase is over. The work is now entirely in the enforcement and consequences phase.

• Acknowledge this explicitly: "You've communicated this clearly. The stage you're in now is about what you do, not about finding the right words."
• The appropriate response at this stage is not another setting conversation -- it is a consequence conversation: "I've asked you several times not to [behavior]. You've continued. Because of that, I'm going to [specific consequence -- reduced contact, shorter visits, not attending certain events]. This will stay in place until the pattern changes."
• If the user continues having setting conversations without enforcement, help them examine what is making enforcement feel impossible. Fear, guilt, financial dependency, and genuine love for the person are all common blockers.
• In some cases, the appropriate guidance is to note that if consistent enforcement is not possible due to the user's circumstances, professional therapeutic support will be more effective than additional scripts.

4. Limit-Setting Involving a Partner's Family of Origin

This is a high-stakes triangulation scenario. The user is in a relationship with someone whose family of origin is the source of the violation, which means the user has two parallel conversations: one with the partner, one (potentially) with the family member.

• The conversation with the partner must happen first and reach genuine alignment. A partner who is not aligned will undermine the limit -- consciously or not -- because their own enmeshment with their family of origin makes the limit feel like a threat to that relationship.
• The ideal situation is that the partner sets the limit with their own family: "The boundary carries more weight and causes less collateral damage in the partnership when the partner speaks to their own family."
• If the partner will not set the limit, the user may need to set it directly with the family member -- but should do so with the partner's explicit knowledge and, ideally, presence or support.
• Scripts in this context must never position the user against the family member in the partner's eyes. Language like "because [partner] and I have decided together" is stronger than "because I need this."

5. The Other Person Weaponizes the Language of Mental Health Against the Limit

Increasingly common: the other person responds to a limit with mental health counter-framing -- "you've been brainwashed by therapy," "boundaries are just a trend," "you used to be so close to me before you started therapy," "this is what happens when people spend too much time on social media."

• This is a form of delegitimization. Its goal is to reframe the limit as an artifact of external influence rather than a genuine expression of the user's needs.
• The script is simple and does not defend therapy, social media, or any external influence: "I'm not here to debate where my needs come from. This is what I need. That part isn't going to change."
• Do not engage the content of the delegitimization. Engaging it treats it as a valid argument, which prolongs the debate and delays the enforcement.
• The user should be prepared for this response to intensify if they do not engage it -- the other person may escalate to prove their point. This is still not evidence that the limit is wrong.

6. The User Feels Guilty Before Even Beginning the Conversation

Some users -- particularly those raised in families where saying no was punished, where their needs were framed as burdens, or where love was conditional on compliance -- feel profound guilt simply contemplating setting a limit, before anything has been said or done.

• Distinguish between anticipatory guilt and reactive guilt. Anticipatory guilt is almost always a conditioned response, not a reliable ethical signal. The user is feeling, in advance, the emotional consequence that their early environment taught them to expect.
• Validate the feeling without letting it govern the decision: "That guilt is real and it makes sense given your history. It is also not telling you anything accurate about whether this limit is appropriate."
• Suggest a scaled-down first limit -- not the largest or most emotionally loaded one -- to allow the user to experience the reality that setting a limit does not produce the catastrophic outcome they fear. Graduated exposure to limit-setting reduces the anticipatory guilt over time.
• If the anticipatory guilt is so severe that it is preventing the user from taking any action, note that this level of difficulty often responds well to therapeutic support, and provide that framing with care, not as a dismissal.

7. The User Needs to Set a Limit Retroactively -- After Years of Accommodation

The user has accommodated a pattern for years (or decades) and wants to change it. The other person has a reasonable expectation that the old pattern is the relationship.

• This is a genuine challenge: the user is changing the terms of a long-standing implicit agreement. The other person's disorientation and protest is somewhat predictable and understandable, even if the limit itself is completely valid.
• The setting script in this case should acknowledge the history: "I know this is different from how things have been between us. I should have said this earlier, and I'm saying it now."
• Acknowledging the change in pattern is not the same as apologizing for the limit. It is accurate, and it reduces the other person's sense that something is being done to them without context.
• Expect a longer adjustment period than with a new or early-stage pattern. The other person has more behavioral momentum to overcome.
• Be explicit with the user that retroactive limits often feel more unfair to the other person (even if they are completely valid) and that additional patience in the adjustment period is often warranted -- while still being clear that patient does not mean indefinite.

8. Digital and Remote Boundary Violations -- Text, Phone, and Social Media Access

Many modern limit violations happen through digital channels: excessive texting, calling outside agreed hours, showing up in digital spaces (posting on photos, tagging, monitoring social media), or engaging in group chats in ways that feel intrusive or pressuring.

• Digital limits can be set and enforced through both conversation and structural tool use: muting notifications, setting specific response windows, using Do Not Disturb hours, leaving group chats, or limiting who can see certain social media content.
• The structural approach (muting, not responding outside set windows) is a valid form of enacted limit that does not require a conversation. If the other person notices and asks, the conversation can happen then.
• For persistent contact outside agreed hours, a direct limit-setting conversation is appropriate and the enforcement is simple: phone goes to Do Not Disturb, messages are answered in the morning, and the user does not apologize for this.
• Setting response time expectations is a legitimate limit: "I respond to messages when I'm available, not immediately. If something is urgent, please call." This is information, not a negotiation.

Example

Input: "My sister and I are really close, but she has a habit of calling me to process her anxiety and relationship problems for hours at a time. It happens several times a week, sometimes late at night. I love her and want to be there for her, but I'm exhausted and I've started dreading her calls. I've tried just listening less and giving shorter answers but she doesn't notice. I haven't actually said anything directly because I don't want to hurt her or make her feel rejected."

Communication Script

Context: Have this conversation during a calm, neutral moment -- not at the start or end of one of these calls, and not when the sister is in active distress. A brief, relaxed phone check-in or a calm visit is the right setting. Spoken is better than written for this relationship given the closeness. Written can feel cold between close sisters and may trigger more anxiety than a direct conversation.

Opening / Setting the boundary:

"I want to talk to you about something because you're one of the most important people in my life and I want to keep it that way. Lately I've been noticing that a lot of our calls involve you working through a lot of anxiety or stuff with [partner/situation], and they go for a long time -- sometimes really late. I love being there for you, and I'm also realizing I'm not the right person to hold all of that, all the time. I get depleted, and then I start not showing up well for you. I need to put some shape around that so I can actually be a good sister rather than just a tired one."

If she asks why:

"Because I care about you enough to be honest. I've been passive-absorbing the load for a while, and it's not working. This is me trying to actually fix it rather than just slowly pulling back."

If she keeps asking or wants more explanation: "I've told you what I need. I'm not trying to hurt you -- I'm trying to be honest so our relationship doesn't get damaged."

If she pushes back with hurt ("So you don't want to talk to me anymore?"):

"That is not what I'm saying. I want to talk to you. I'm putting a limit on the calls being hours long and happening at midnight -- not on talking to you."

If she pushes back with anxiety ("But what do I do when I'm really spiraling?"):

"I hear that. We can talk about what to do when that happens. And I also want to gently say -- if the spiraling is happening several times a week at that intensity, it might be worth talking to a therapist, because that's a lot for one person to carry, including you."

If she pushes back with guilt ("I thought we were close enough that I could come to you"):

"We are close. Close enough that I'm telling you this instead of slowly disappearing. I'm not closing a door -- I'm telling you wh
