Phase 1: Understanding Carbon Footprints
What is a Carbon Footprint?
Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases produced by your activities, measured in metric tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) per year. CO2e accounts for the different warming potentials of various greenhouse gases by converting them to a CO2 equivalent.

Where Your Carbon Footprint Comes From (US Average)
Transportation accounts for about 29%, home energy about 25%, food about 15%, goods and services about 20%, and other categories (healthcare, education, government) about 11%.
Phase 2: Personal Carbon Calculation
Transportation Calculation
Driving: Divide your annual miles driven by your vehicle's MPG to get gallons used. Multiply gallons by 0.00889 tCO2 per gallon of gasoline. For example, 12,000 miles divided by 25 MPG equals 480 gallons, times 0.00889 equals 4.27 tCO2.
Flying: Short-haul round trips (under 3 hours) produce approximately 0.25 tCO2 each. Medium-haul round trips (3-6 hours) produce approximately 0.75 tCO2 each. Long-haul round trips (6+ hours) produce approximately 1.5-3.0 tCO2 each.
Public Transit: Bus travel produces approximately 0.00009 tCO2 per mile. Train travel produces approximately 0.00004 tCO2 per mile.
Home Energy Calculation
Electricity: Multiply annual kWh by your grid's carbon intensity in kg CO2 per kWh, then divide by 1,000. The US average grid intensity is approximately 0.4 kg CO2 per kWh.
Natural Gas: Multiply annual therms by 0.0053 tCO2 per therm.
Heating Oil: Multiply annual gallons by 0.01016 tCO2 per gallon.

Transportation Reduction Strategies
Immediate no-cost actions include combining errands, walking or biking for trips under 2 miles, carpooling, working from home, and using public transit.
Short-term actions include maintaining your vehicle properly (correct tire pressure saves 3% fuel), driving efficiently with gentle acceleration, and planning routes to minimize distance.
Medium-term actions include choosing hybrid or electric when replacing a vehicle, relocating closer to work if considering a move, and replacing a second car with an e-bike.
Diet Reduction Strategies
A gradual approach is recommended: Start by tracking current meat consumption. Then replace beef in 2 meals per week with chicken or plant protein. Add one fully meatless day per week. Reduce beef to once per week or less. Continue expanding plant-based meal repertoire and reducing dairy.
Quick wins include swapping beef for chicken (5-10x lower carbon per serving), swapping dairy milk for oat or soy milk (3-4x lower carbon), reducing food waste, buying seasonal and local, and eating less processed food.

Low-cost actions: Adjust thermostat, switch to LED bulbs, unplug phantom loads, wash clothes in cold water, air dry clothes, use natural ventilation before AC.

Phase 5: Carbon Offsetting
Understanding Offsets
Carbon offsetting means paying for projects that reduce or remove CO2 elsewhere to compensate for your own emissions. Offsetting should supplement reduction, not replace it.
The hierarchy is: First reduce your emissions as much as possible, then offset what remains.
Evaluating Offset Quality
High-quality offsets should be verified by a recognized standard (Gold Standard, VCS, ACR), additional (the project would not have happened without offset funding), permanent (not easily reversed), not double-counted, and transparent with clear documentation.
