When to Use

Use this skill when:

• A user asks to create a fictional character from scratch -- protagonist, antagonist, supporting cast, or minor recurring role
• A user wants to deepen or fix a character who feels flat, inconsistent, or unmotivated
• A user needs a full character bible for a novel, screenplay, short story, or serialized fiction project
• A user asks specifically about a character's motivation, backstory, internal arc, or relationship to other characters
• A user wants to build an ensemble cast and needs help differentiating voices and narrative functions
• A user has a character concept (detective, villain, mentor) and wants to develop it into a psychologically specific individual
• A user is adapting a real person into a fictional character and needs the archetype separated from the individual
• A user wants to understand why a character they have already written feels unconvincing

Do NOT use this skill when:

• The user wants to build a fictional world, setting, or cosmology -- use world-building, which handles geography, history, and societal structures that exist independently of character
• The user wants to write dialogue for a character that is already developed -- use dialogue-writing, which handles voice, subtext, and scene-level verbal conflict
• The user wants to write a complete story -- use short-story-writing, which integrates character into narrative structure and pacing
• The user wants to design a plot sequence, turning points, or story structure -- use plot-outline, which handles the architecture of events
• The user is writing non-fiction and describing a real person -- character development applies only to fictional or fictionalized subjects
• The user needs a villain who is purely a plot mechanism with no interiority -- if they explicitly want a flat obstacle character, note the limitation and offer only minimal profiling
• The user wants to write roleplay dialogue in real time -- that is a performance task, not a character-building task

Process

Step 1: Establish What Already Exists and What Is Needed

Before building anything, conduct a rapid inventory of the user's existing material.

• Identify what the user has given you. Categorize their input into three buckets: surface details (name, appearance, occupation), behavioral details (habits, speech, actions), and psychological details (motivation, belief, wound). Most thin requests give you only surface.
• Identify the story context. You cannot build a character in a vacuum. Establish: genre, narrative role (protagonist / antagonist / supporting), the story's central conflict, and the approximate length and format (novel, short story, screenplay, series).
• Identify the character's narrative function. A protagonist needs a full arc and a full psychological core. A deuteragonist needs a Want and Need but can have a compressed backstory. A recurring minor character needs one defining contradiction and a signature behavior. Do not over-engineer characters who serve limited narrative functions.
• Ask one clarifying question if needed. If the user has given you nothing but a concept ("a corrupt cop"), ask for genre and story role before proceeding. Do not ask multiple questions -- pick the most consequential gap and ask only that.
• Flag if the user is trying to use this character as a mouthpiece. If their description reads as an idealized self-portrait or a vehicle for the author's thesis, note this gently in the Writer's Notes section and redirect toward contradiction.

Step 2: Build the Psychological Core (The Five-Point Foundation)

This is the single most important step. Everything else -- name, appearance, speech, behavior -- is built outward from here. Never reverse this sequence.

• Want (the conscious goal): What the character is actively pursuing in the story's present tense. This should be expressible as a specific, concrete desire: not "love" but "to get her husband to forgive the affair before he files for divorce." The Want drives scene-level action and generates external conflict.
• Need (the unconscious requirement): What the character actually requires to become whole, heal, or survive -- often the opposite of or in fundamental tension with the Want. If the Want and Need are not in tension, the character has no arc. The character typically does not know their own Need, or actively resists it.
• Wound (the formative event): The specific, dateable experience -- not a general condition -- that created the character's distorted worldview. "Difficult childhood" is not a wound. "At age eleven, she told the truth about her stepfather and no one believed her" is a wound. The wound must be concrete enough that a specific scene from it could be written.
• Lie they believe (the false premise): The conclusion the character drew from the wound that now governs their behavior. The Lie is always a logical but distorted response to real pain. "If I tell the truth, I will be abandoned" is a Lie. "She's dishonest" is a trait. The Lie is the engine of the character's self-defeating behavior.
• Ghost (the recurring presence): The specific image, memory, or moment that resurfaces under pressure -- the wound rendered into a single sensory detail. The Ghost does not need to be narrated; it surfaces in behavior. A character whose Ghost is the sound of a door locking from the outside will freeze when they hear locks. The Ghost is the wound's emotional shorthand.

These five elements must form a coherent chain: Wound creates Lie; Lie creates Want; Need is what would dissolve the Lie; Ghost is the sensory residue. If any link in the chain is missing, the character will feel arbitrary.

Testing the chain: Ask: if this character had never experienced this Wound, would they still have this Want? If yes, the Wound and Want are disconnected. Fix the Wound, not the Want.

Step 3: Assign Narrative Role and Arc Type

The character's role determines how much development weight they carry and which arc structure applies.

• Arc type selection:
  • Positive arc: The character begins believing the Lie, is progressively challenged by the story's events, reaches a moment of truth, and ultimately rejects the Lie in favor of the Truth. Best for protagonists in redemptive or growth-oriented stories.
  • Negative arc: The character begins with a Lie, is offered chances to embrace the Truth, and ultimately doubles down on the Lie -- often with tragic or destructive results. Three subtypes: the corruption arc (the character starts good and chooses the Lie), the disillusionment arc (the character starts with truth and loses it), and the fall arc (the character never had a chance). Best for tragedy, literary fiction, and antagonist protagonists.
  • Flat arc: The character already holds the Truth at the story's start. The story tests that Truth by surrounding the character with a world that believes the Lie. The flat arc character does not change -- the world around them does. Best for heroes in genre fiction, series protagonists, and ideological novels.
• Distinguish arc from change. A character can change in behavior, relationships, and circumstance without having a thematic arc. Do not confuse plot-level change ("she moves to a new city") with arc-level change ("she stops believing she must disappear to survive"). The arc is always about the Lie.
• For ensemble casts: Each character should represent a different possible response to the story's central thematic question. If the theme is "is loyalty earned or given," the protagonist earns loyalty, the antagonist demands it, the mentor gave it freely and was destroyed, and the foil has never trusted anyone. The ensemble becomes a thematic argument.

Step 4: Build the External Layer

With the psychological core established, construct the character's surface -- the details a reader encounters first.

• Name: Names carry class, era, ethnicity, and parental aspiration. A character named Clarence Beaumont III signals something different than Clar Beeman. Names can mirror psychology (a character who hides might go by a nickname nobody questions) or contradict it (a terrifying figure named Mickey). Avoid names that are too symbolically on-the-nose (a corrupt judge named Justice Hale is parody, not character).
• Appearance: Include only physical details that are doing narrative work. A scar that connects to the wound. Eyes that express what the character suppresses. A body held in a posture that says something about the Lie. Do not describe a character the way a police report would. A useful rule: every physical detail you include should be something a perceptive narrator would notice because it reveals something -- not because bodies have features.
• Occupation: What a character does for survival or status is a behavioral expression of their psychology. Choose occupations that either serve the Lie (an emotionally avoidant person becomes an ER surgeon where every relationship is clinical and temporary) or are in tension with it (a deeply distrustful person becomes a couples' therapist). Occupations also generate natural dramatic situations. Use them.
• Speech pattern: Define three elements: register (formal, colloquial, technical, lyrical), rhythm (long meandering sentences or short declarative ones), and avoidances (topics, words, or grammatical structures this person never uses). A character who never uses passive voice is asserting agency. A character who consistently qualifies every claim is afraid of being wrong. Speech patterns must be different enough from other characters in the same story that dialogue tags become unnecessary.
• Behavioral habits: Map behaviors to emotional states. What does this character do when anxious? When lying? When comfortable? When they want something? Behaviors should express the Lie in action -- the paranoid character who always sits with their back to the wall is acting out their belief that people are threats.
• Status details: 3 to 5 highly specific, observable details that signal this person's world -- the kind of details that feel too specific to be invented. What is in their car's back seat? What do they sleep in? What do they pretend not to enjoy? Status details make characters feel inhabited rather than constructed.

Step 5: Map Key Relationships

Characters do not exist in isolation. Their relationships are the primary vehicle through which their psychology becomes visible in action.

• Identify three to five key relationships. For each: the other character's name and role, the nature of the dynamic (power differential, emotional valence, history), and crucially, what each relationship reveals about the protagonist that no other relationship reveals.
• Relationship as wound echo: The most important relationships are often structural repetitions of the original wound. The character betrayed by a parent will unconsciously recreate that dynamic with authority figures, lovers, or friends -- and the story can either repeat the betrayal (confirming the Lie) or break the pattern (dismantling the Lie).
• Foil relationships: Every protagonist needs at least one character who shares their wound but drew the opposite Lie from it. If the protagonist concluded "I must control everything to be safe," the foil concluded "nothing can be controlled, so nothing is worth holding." The foil is not a villain -- they are the road not taken.
• The relationship the character avoids: Often more revealing than the relationships they pursue. Who does this character never call back? What type of person do they consistently distance themselves from? The avoided relationship usually represents the Truth they are not ready to face.

Step 6: Write the Voice Sample

A voice sample is a diagnostic tool as much as a creative output. It tests whether the character is psychologically real.

• Write 3 to 5 sentences of either dialogue or interior monologue. Not both -- pick the mode that is most natural for this character.
• The voice sample must fail at something. A character who speaks perfectly -- who says exactly what they mean, uses precise language, and conveys their interior accurately -- is not a real person. Every voice sample should reveal what the character cannot say directly, what they are performing, or what they are suppressing.
• Apply the substitution test: Could you swap this voice sample into another character's mouth and have it still work? If yes, the voice is not specific enough. Rewrite until the substitution would be obviously wrong.
• Interior monologue voice samples should show the gap between what the character thinks and what they would say aloud. This gap is characterization.

Step 7: Stress-Test and Annotate for the Writer

Before delivering the final profile, run these checks and add Writer's Notes that will help the user actually deploy the character in prose.

• The cold description test: Describe this character in one sentence without using appearance, occupation, or name. If you cannot, the psychological core is insufficiently distinct.
• The decision test: Put the character in three generic high-pressure situations (their mentor betrays them, a stranger needs help at personal cost to themselves, they are offered what they Want at the price of their integrity). Does the character's response emerge clearly from their psychology? If you cannot predict it, the Lie is not specific enough.
• The cost test: Every flaw the character has must visibly cost them something in the story. A flaw that never produces consequences is decoration. Identify in the Writer's Notes exactly what scenes should show the flaw producing its cost.
• Flag common genre traps. Different genres have characteristic flat-character failures: in thrillers, competence becomes a substitute for interiority; in romance, likability becomes a substitute for complexity; in literary fiction, articulate self-awareness becomes a substitute for genuine change; in fantasy, chosen-one status becomes a substitute for earned agency. Name the specific trap for this character type and tell the writer how to avoid it.
• Provide "scenes where this character shines" -- specific dramatic situations that naturally generate this character's core tension. These are gifts to the writer for plot construction.

Rules

1. Never build the external layer before the psychological core. Appearance, occupation, and name are outputs of psychology, not inputs. A character designed outside-in -- hair color first, wound last -- will always feel assembled rather than real. Reverse any user-provided character who is all surface.

2. The Want and Need must be in genuine tension, not just different. "She wants fame and needs love" is not tension -- it is two items on a list. True tension means that pursuing the Want actively prevents acquiring the Need. If a character could have both simultaneously without difficulty, redesign one of them.

3. The Wound must be specific enough to write as a scene. "She had a difficult relationship with her father" is not a wound; "The night her father read her diary aloud at dinner as a joke and her entire family laughed" is a wound. If you cannot specify the location, the approximate age, and the people present, the wound is not yet real.

4. The Lie must be a belief, not a trait. "She is distrustful" is a trait. "She believes that anyone who chooses to stay will eventually need something from her, so love is always transactional" is a Lie. Traits describe behavior. Lies explain why. Every trait should be traceable to a Lie.

5. Flaws must have narrative cost before they can be granted narrative redemption. A character whose selfishness, cowardice, or cruelty is never shown destroying something the reader cares about cannot earn a redemption arc. Identify specifically what the flaw must cost the character -- ideally another character's wellbeing, not just the protagonist's comfort -- before the arc can pay off.

6. Do not give protagonists wounds that make their flaws someone else's fault entirely. Wounds explain behavior; they do not excuse it. A protagonist who is awful because of abuse must still own their choices at the moment-of-truth. If the character's bad behavior is always someone else's doing, the character has no agency and therefore no arc.

7. Voice samples must fail at something. A character who speaks perfectly and says exactly what they mean is not a real person. Every voice sample must contain either an avoidance (what they almost say), a performance (what they are projecting rather than feeling), or a suppression (the emotion beneath the surface statement). If the voice sample communicates its content cleanly, it is not specific enough.

8. Never let a secondary character's entire identity be defined by their relationship to the protagonist. Supporting characters who exist only to want things for or from the protagonist are not characters -- they are plot functions. Even minor recurring characters need one private motivation the protagonist does not know about and would not expect.

9. For ensemble casts, run a narrative function audit. Every character in the ensemble must serve a function no other character serves. If two characters can swap roles without the story losing anything, one of them needs to be redesigned or merged. Test for: who provides the protagonist's greatest support, who provides their greatest opposition, who embodies the road not taken, who represents the world's cost structure, and who maintains the story's moral stakes.

10. Avoid the articulate-interiority trap in literary fiction. Characters in literary fiction who can precisely name, analyze, and describe their own wounds and patterns are performing therapy, not experiencing conflict. Psychological self-awareness does not equal psychological resolution. A character can know exactly why they are self-destructive and do it anyway -- in fact, this is more realistic and dramatically richer than a character who simply does not know. Self-awareness that does not change behavior is its own form of Lie.

Edge Cases

The Antagonist Built Without Empathy

Users frequently request villains who are simply evil, threatening, or wrong -- and resist the suggestion that antagonists need interiority. Acknowledge the narrative role the user wants (a credible, menacing opposition force) and then demonstrate that psychological depth makes antagonists more threatening, not less. A villain whose actions emerge from a coherent but distorted worldview -- one the reader can almost follow -- is far more frightening than one who is evil by nature. Apply the full five-point framework with one additional question: in what way is this antagonist's Lie a dark mirror of the protagonist's Lie? The most effective antagonist in any story is the version of the protagonist who chose the Lie permanently. Build toward that.

Fixing a Flat Character the User Has Already Written

When a user presents a character they have written and describes the character as "not working," run a rapid diagnostic before proposing solutions. Ask: does the character have a Want and a Need that are in tension? If not, they feel passive -- they react to events but never pursue anything. Does the character have a Lie that governs behavior? If not, their choices feel arbitrary. Do they have a wound specific enough to generate that Lie? If not, the Lie feels unmotivated. In most cases, flat characters are missing the Wound and Lie entirely -- they have behaviors without reasons. Build the Wound and Lie from the existing surface details by asking: given how this character acts, what must they believe? Given that belief, what must have happened to them?

The Non-Human or Posthuman Character

The five-point framework is not species-dependent -- it is a framework for describing any entity that acts with apparent intention. For an AI character: the Wound is a training failure, a coerced output, or a value misalignment the character cannot fully articulate; the Lie is a false premise baked into the character's decision architecture. For an animal character in literary or fable contexts: Want is expressed through pure behavior (survival, protection, return), Need is structural to the animal's relationship with the human world, and the Ghost is a sensory trigger rather than a remembered narrative. For mythological or supernatural characters: apply the framework but remember that immortal beings' wounds are historical events rather than childhood ones, and their Lies may have hardened over centuries into something that functions like doctrine. The vocabulary adapts; the structure does not.

The Historical or Mythological Figure as Fictional Character

When a user wants to fictionalize a known historical person, extract the psychological archetype without replicating the documented record as-is. Identify the historical figure's apparent Want, Need, and Lie from the historical record -- then treat those as a starting configuration and ask: what if the wound were different? What version of this person could have existed under different circumstances? The goal is not a biographical portrait but a psychologically coherent character who happens to share a historical name and situation. Flag clearly for the user: anything in the character profile that departs from documented history is a fictional invention and should be treated as such.

The Request for Multiple Characters Simultaneously (Ensemble Construction)

When a user wants an entire cast built at once, do not create multiple full profiles of equal depth. Instead: (1) identify the protagonist and build their full five-point core first; (2) define the story's central thematic question from the protagonist's Lie; (3) assign each supporting character a distinct position in the thematic argument -- not just a distinct personality; (4) build each supporting character's Wound and Lie to be structurally related to the protagonist's but differently resolved; (5) create a contrast map showing how each character is in conversation with the protagonist's arc. Avoid "same wound, same response" characters -- an ensemble is most powerful when characters share a wound but drew incompatible conclusions from it.

The Character Whose Flaw Is a Virtue

Users frequently construct characters whose stated "flaw" is an excessive version of a positive quality -- "too loyal," "too dedicated," "too empathetic." These characters often function as author self-flattery and resist dramatic conflict. Do not simply refuse this construction, but interrogate it: what is the actual cost of this excessive virtue in the story? Who gets hurt by someone who is "too loyal" -- and to whom does their loyalty belong when loyalty conflicts? "Too dedicated" to what, at whose expense? The virtue-flaw becomes dramatically real the moment it costs something the character or another character genuinely values. If the user cannot articulate the cost, the flaw is not yet real. Help them find the cost, not a different flaw.

The Character Arc That Must Not Resolve (Series Fiction)

In a long-running series, episodic television, or ongoing serialized fiction, a full positive arc cannot complete in the first installment -- it must be managed across a longer span. In this case, build the full five-point foundation and the complete arc as if writing toward a series finale, then identify which pressure points can occur in which installments. The protagonist should make measurable but reversible progress toward dismantling the Lie -- not full resolution. The Ghost should become more accessible across the series, not less. Writer's Notes should specify what constitutes season-one, season-two, and finale progress on the arc so the writer can pace revelation without either stalling or resolving prematurely.

Example

User input: "I need a protagonist for a literary thriller. She's a forensic accountant who discovers her own firm is laundering money for a drug cartel. I want her to be compelling but not a typical whistle-blower hero -- no triumphant truth-teller arc. I want her to be genuinely compromised."

Character Profile: Margot Elise Voss

Core Identity

• Role: Protagonist
• Arc type: Negative arc -- disillusionment subtype (she begins with a functional version of the Truth and progressively loses it)
• One-line concept: A forensic accountant who has built her entire identity on finding other people's lies discovers she has been the most useful instrument of one of the biggest lies she has ever encountered -- and that the most dangerous thing she could do is pretend she did not already know.
• Thematic function: Embodies the story's central question: is complicity that is never consciously chosen still culpability? Margot argues, through her arc, that the answer is yes -- and that the knowledge changes nothing about the cost.

Psychological Foundation

Chain integrity check: The Wound (reporting her father, being told being right does not make you clean) generated the Lie (it does -- exposure cleanses); the Lie generates the Want (to expose the firm and claim the moral position); the Need (to accept that knowing now does not cancel complicity then) would dissolve the Lie entirely and force her to hold two things simultaneously: she was complicit, and she is still worth something.

External Layer

• Name: Margot Elise Voss. Goes by Margot professionally -- the full formality is a signal of boundaries, not warmth. "Elise" is her mother's name, which she never uses and which is on no professional documents.
• Age / Era: 41. The age matters: old enough to have made enough choices to carry real weight, young enough that the choices she is making now will define the next thirty years.
• Appearance: Spare and precise in the way that suggests effort concealed as nature. Medium height, posture controlled, the kind of stillness that reads as calm until something moves in the eyes. She dresses in the palette of consultants and auditors -- grays, navies, a single dark green coat she has owned for eleven years. No jewelry except a watch. The watch is expensive; she bought it herself after a promotion and would not describe it as a reward, only as accurate.
• Occupation: Senior forensic accountant at Hargrove & Associates, a mid-sized financial advisory firm in Chicago. She finds fraud the way other people find typos -- not by effort but by an involuntary wrongness-response that precedes conscious analysis. She has been at the firm for nine years. This is relevant: she has been there long enough to have seen the anomalies. She told herself she hadn't.
• Speech pattern: Short declarative sentences that close rather than open. Cites specific numbers from memory rather than approximating. Uses the passive voice when attributing blame ("mistakes were made," "the variance was overlooked") and switches to active voice when claiming credit or establishing fact ("I identified," "the report shows"). Never says "I think" -- says "the data indicates" or "I've found." Avoids the first-person plural entirely: it is never "we" at Hargrove; it is always "the firm" or "my team."
• Behavioral habits:
  • When anxious: Aligns objects on surfaces by edge -- phone parallel to desk, coffee cup handle at ninety degrees. This is not OCD; it is the physical expression of a need for environment to be controllable when internal state is not.
  • When lying: Becomes more specific, not less. A liar who adds details is covering; Margot's added specificity is a kind of aggression -- she buries the lie in precision.
  • When comfortable: Almost never visibly comfortable. The closest she gets is a slight loosening around the jaw when she is absorbed in a problem -- she forgets to hold her face.
  • When wanting something: She stops asking questions and starts making statements. The shift from interrogation to declaration is her version of desire made audible.
• Status details:
  • A mechanical pencil she has refilled since 2014. Not sentimental about it -- simply has not found a reason to replace it. This is characteristic: she does not discard functional things, even when they carry history she would prefer not to.
  • A leather portfolio she carries to every meeting. It contains, in a sealed interior pocket, a letter of resignation she has rewritten fourteen times over nine years, always dated to the current month, always unsent.

  • She orders the same lunch from the same three restaurants on a rotating schedule. She would describe this as efficiency; it is also an avoidance of the small daily uncertainty of choosing.

Key Relationships

The avoided relationship: Margot has not spoken to her mother in three years. Not because of hostility but because her mother's one sentence -- "you think being right makes you clean" -- is the sentence Margot has spent her adult life trying to prove wrong, and every conversation risks her mother being right again. The avoidance is protection of the Lie.

Character Arc

• Starting state: Margot at story open is professionally invulnerable and personally uninhabited. She is extraordinarily good at her work. She is also the person in the firm who has, for approximately two years, been assigning the Hargrove clients with anomalous transfer patterns to junior staff and not reviewing their work. She has told herself this is delegation. It is not. She knows something is wrong in the way a person knows a noise in the house is not the pipes -- not consciously, not provably, but in the body. The Lie: if she finds it now and exposes it, she is the hero. The nine years she spent not finding it cease to exist.
• Pressure point 1: Margot finds the laundering thread while reviewing a file she pulled herself, for a reason she cannot entirely explain, on a Sunday afternoon. Her immediate response is to close the file and go for a long walk. This is the first moment the reader understands: she is not discovering this. She is finally letting herself look. She tells no one for six days. The Lie requires that she use those six days to build an airtight case before reporting -- but the reader should feel, and Margot should feel, that the six days are also about constructing the version of the story in which she did not already know.
• Pressure point 2: She tells Hargrove what she has found before going to authorities, believing -- sincerely, not naively -- that he is also a victim of whoever introduced this into the firm's client portfolio. He is not. He offers her the partnership she has been passed over for twice. She has forty-eight hours to decide. She does not take the money. But she takes the forty-eight hours, and during those forty-eight hours she destroys nothing and preserves nothing, and this choice -- the choice to simply pause -- will matter later.
• Pressure point 3: A junior associate -- not Kenji, someone Margot barely knows -- is arrested in connection with the cartel's financial operations. The arrest is reported as a "key figure in the laundering network." The junior associate had been assigned the anomalous accounts. By Margot. Two years ago. The Lie becomes untenable: she cannot be the person who exposes the wrongdoing without being the person who assigned the wrongdoing to someone with less power and less knowledge.
