This phrase is used often but rarely defined concretely. Here is what it means in practice:

• Your child's relationship with their other parent is not your relationship with your ex. Protect it.
• Children do best when they do not feel caught in the middle, forced to choose sides, or responsible for adult emotions.
• Your feelings about your ex are valid. Your child's feelings about their parent are also valid. These can coexist.
• Stability, predictability, and low conflict are more important to children's outcomes than any particular custody arrangement.
• Children are not messengers, therapists, spies, or allies. They are children.

Think of your co-parent as a business partner in the most important venture of your life: raising your children.

Business Partner Communication:

• Professional, brief, and focused on the children
• Stick to facts and logistics, not feelings and history
• Respond in a timely manner
• Keep records
• Use written communication for important decisions
• Save emotional processing for your therapist, friends, or journal - not for your co-parent

Communication Strategies

The BIFF Method

Developed by Bill Eddy for high-conflict communication, BIFF is effective for all co-parenting communication:

B - Brief: Keep it short. Say what needs to be said and stop. Long messages invite conflict.

I - Informative: Provide necessary information. Focus on facts: who, what, when, where. Avoid opinions about the other parent's character or motives.

F - Friendly: A professional, neutral tone. Not warm and affectionate, but not hostile either. "Thank you for letting me know" goes a long way.

F - Firm: End the conversation. Do not leave openings for back-and-forth argument. State your point, provide information, and close.

BIFF in Practice

Scenario: Schedule change request

Poor communication: "You always do this. You never stick to the schedule and then expect me to drop everything. The kids need consistency, which you clearly don't care about."

BIFF response: "I can accommodate the schedule change this Saturday. In the future, I would appreciate at least 48 hours' notice for changes. I will pick the kids up at 5 PM as adjusted. Thanks."

Scenario: Disagreement about an activity

Poor communication: "I can't believe you signed Ella up for soccer without asking me. You always make decisions without considering anyone else. I'm not driving her to practice on my days."

BIFF response: "I see that Ella has been signed up for soccer. Since this affects both our schedules, I would like to discuss activity sign-ups together before committing. Can we agree on a process for this going forward? I am available to talk Tuesday or Wednesday evening."

Communication Ground Rules

What Needs to Be Consistent

Not everything needs to be identical between homes. Focus on the essentials:

• Expectations about respect toward adults

• Bedtime (within 30-minute range for younger children)
• Medical care and medication schedules
• Screen time limits (at least roughly aligned)
• Discipline philosophy (no hitting, yelling, shaming in either home)

Can Be Different:

• House rules specific to each home (shoes off, chores, etc.)
• Food preferences and meal routines
• Weekend activities
• Bedtime routines (bath, stories, etc.)
• Organization of the child's space
• Entertainment choices

When Parents Disagree on Rules

Children are remarkably adaptable. They already navigate different rules at school, grandparents' houses, and friends' homes. The key is that each home's rules are clear, consistent within that home, and not disparaging of the other home's approach.

Framework for Discussion:

1. Is this a safety issue? If yes, both homes must align.
2. Is this a values issue? Discuss and try to find common ground, but accept that some differences will exist.
3. Is this a preference issue? Each parent can handle it their way.
4. Does the child's wellbeing depend on consistency? (Medical care, sleep for young children, school expectations - yes.)

Handling Disagreements

The Business Meeting Approach

For significant decisions (school choice, medical treatment, extracurricular commitments, religious practices), treat it like a business meeting:

Step 1: Identify the decision that needs to be made
Step 2: Each parent researches and gathers information
Step 3: Schedule a time to discuss (not during a transition)
Step 4: Each parent shares their perspective without interrupting
Step 5: Identify areas of agreement first
Step 6: Discuss areas of disagreement with a focus on the child's needs
Step 7: If agreement is reached, document it in writing
Step 8: If no agreement, consider mediation before escalating

When You Cannot Agree

• Mediation: A neutral third party helps you reach agreement. Required in many jurisdictions before going to court. Significantly less expensive, less adversarial, and less traumatic than litigation.
• Parenting coordinator: A mental health or legal professional appointed (or agreed upon) to help resolve ongoing disputes. Has limited decision-making authority in some states.
• Counseling: A family therapist specializing in co-parenting can help you develop better patterns.
• Court: The last resort. A judge decides. Neither parent gets exactly what they want. The process is expensive, slow, and stressful for everyone - especially children.

Picking Your Battles

Not every disagreement is worth fighting about. Before engaging in conflict, ask yourself:

1. Will this matter in 5 years?
2. Is my child's safety or wellbeing at genuine risk?
3. Am I reacting to what my co-parent did, or to how it made me feel?
4. What will my child gain if I fight this? What will they lose (conflict, instability, stress)?
5. Is this about my child or about my relationship with my ex?

If the answer to #2 is no, consider letting it go. Save your energy and relational capital for the issues that truly affect your children.

Parallel Parenting for High-Conflict Situations

When Collaborative Co-Parenting Is Not Possible

Some co-parenting relationships are too conflictual for direct, collaborative communication. This does not mean you have failed. It means you need a different approach.

Parallel parenting means each parent independently manages their own household and parenting time with minimal direct interaction.

Parallel Parenting Structure

Communication:

• Written only (co-parenting app or email - never text or phone)
• Strictly factual and logistical - no personal commentary
• 24-48 hour response time (reduces reactive responding)
• No in-person communication beyond brief, scripted transitions
• Consider using a communication review process (write, wait 1 hour, reread, then send)

Transitions:

• Use a neutral location (school, daycare, public library)
• If a neutral location is not possible, curbside drop-off (no one enters the other's home)
• Minimize or eliminate direct face-to-face contact
• A trusted third party can facilitate if needed

Decision-Making:

• Follow the court order exactly as written
• Use a parenting coordinator for disputes
• Each parent makes day-to-day decisions during their own time
• Major decisions (as defined by the court order) still require both parents

Boundaries:

• No discussion of the other parent's personal life, dating, finances, or household
• No deviation from the parenting plan without written agreement
• No informal changes to the schedule (everything in writing)
• Strict adherence to pick-up and drop-off times

Protecting Children in High-Conflict Situations

• Never argue in front of children (including on the phone when they can hear)
• Never ask children to carry messages, money, or information
• Never ask children about the other parent's life
• Never make children feel responsible for adult problems
• Maintain a calm, neutral demeanor during all transitions
• If your child shares something concerning about the other home, listen without visible alarm, document it, and consult your attorney or therapist
• Consider therapy for your children - they need a safe space to process their feelings

Holiday and Special Occasion Management

Holiday Division Framework

Option 1: Alternating Years

• Parent A gets Thanksgiving in even years, Parent B in odd years
• Swap Christmas Eve/Day assignments each year
• Same for all major holidays

Option 2: Split the Day

• Morning with one parent, afternoon/evening with the other

Taking Care of Yourself

The Emotional Work of Co-Parenting

Co-parenting requires sustained emotional labor, especially in the early years post-separation. This is legitimate, exhausting work.
