The A/B/C Story Structure

Every sitcom episode weaves multiple story threads:

A Story (60-65% of screen time)

• The main plot of the episode

• Has the most complete arc: setup, escalation, climax, resolution
• Carries the emotional weight of the episode
• The A story is what the episode "is about"

B Story (25-30% of screen time)

• The secondary plot
• Often involves supporting characters
• Thematically connected to the A story (mirrors, contrasts, or comments on it)
• Has its own arc but can be simpler
• Sometimes the B story provides the comic relief if the A story is more emotional

C Story / Runner (5-15% of screen time)

• The lightest storyline, often just 3-5 scenes
• Pure comedy --- minimal emotional weight
• May involve background characters or a simple running gag
• Provides tonal variety and pacing breaks
• Not every episode needs a C story, but most have one

Beat Sheet: Half-Hour Single-Cam (Broadcast, 2-Act)

COLD OPEN (1-2 pages) A self-contained comedic moment that establishes the world and tone. Often introduces the A story's inciting incident, but can be a standalone joke.

ACT ONE (13-16 pages)

• A story setup: What is the problem/goal for this episode?
• B story setup: Introduce the secondary conflict
• A story complication: The first attempt fails or things get worse
• B story development: B characters engage with their problem
• ACT BREAK: A story hits a turning point (things are much worse now)

ACT TWO (13-16 pages)

• A story escalation: Attempts to solve the problem create bigger problems
• B story escalation: B plot thickens
• C story beats (if applicable): Quick scenes for variety
• A story climax: The moment of maximum comedy and/or emotional truth
• B story resolution: B plot resolves (often connects back to A thematically)
• A story resolution: Problem solved (or accepted), lesson learned (or not)
• TAG (optional, 1 page): A final joke or callback, often unrelated to the plots

The Sitcom Engine

Every sitcom has an engine --- the fundamental dynamic that generates stories week after week.

Comedy Mechanics

The Joke Structure

At its most basic, a joke has two components:

Setup: Establishes an expectation or pattern Punchline: Violates that expectation in a surprising but logical way

The surprise must be both unexpected AND make a kind of sense. Randomness is not funny. Surprise that retroactively reframes the setup is funny.

Joke Types for Script Writing

The Callback: Reference an earlier joke or moment. Creates a sense of a shared world. More rewarding the further back the original reference was.

The Runner: A joke that repeats and escalates throughout the episode. Each recurrence should add something (context change, escalation, subversion).

The Tag: An additional punchline that follows the initial joke. "One more thing" that extends the laugh.

The Topper: A joke that is funnier than the one before it in a sequence. Always top your previous joke; never follow a big laugh with a small one.

The Button: The final joke that ends a scene, sketch, or conversation. Must be the strongest joke in the sequence.

The Misdirect: Lead the audience to expect one thing, then deliver another. The gap between expectation and reality is the comedy.

Ironic Juxtaposition: Placing two things together that create comedy through their contrast. A mob boss at a ballet recital. A brilliant scientist who cannot cook toast.

The Rule of Three

Present two items that establish a pattern, then a third that breaks it. "I've been to Paris, I've been to Rome, I've been to the gas station bathroom on I-95."

Heightening

Take a comedic idea and push it further, then further, then further. Each beat should be bigger than the last.

Scene 1: Character tells a small lie. Scene 2: Lie requires a bigger lie to maintain. Scene 3: Lie requires an absurd, elaborate deception. Scene 4: The entire lie collapses spectacularly.

The Comedic Character Formula

Comedy characters need:

• A strong point of view (how they see the world differently)
• A blind spot (what they cannot see about themselves)
• A want (what they pursue obsessively)
• A flaw that undermines their want
• A consistent logic (their behavior may be insane, but it follows THEIR logic)

Sketch Writing

Sketch Structure

The Premise: One clear, funny idea. If you cannot state it in one sentence, it is not a sketch --- it is a scene from a longer piece.

The Pattern:

1. Establish the premise (30-60 seconds)
2. First beat: Play the premise straight
3. Second beat: Escalate or find a new angle on the premise
4. Third beat: Escalate further or subvert expectations
5. Blackout/Button: End on the biggest laugh

Length: 3-7 minutes is the sweet spot. Under 3 and you have not explored the premise. Over 7 and you have overstayed your welcome.

Sketch Writing Rules

• Find the game. The "game" is the specific pattern of comedy in the sketch. What is the unusual thing? Once identified, play it repeatedly with variations.
• If the premise is crazy, the world should be grounded. One absurd element is funny. Everything absurd is chaos.
• Get to the funny fast. Audiences give a sketch about 30 seconds before they decide whether to keep watching.
• End on a high. The hardest part of sketch writing is the ending. End on the biggest laugh. When in doubt, blackout.
• Cut the first 30 seconds. Your draft sketch probably does not start where the sketch actually begins.

• The Escalation: Normal situation becomes increasingly absurd
• The Fish Out of Water: Character from one world in another
• The Overly Specific: Character takes a normal thing absurdly seriously
• The Substitution: Replace one element of a familiar situation with something unexpected

• The Competition: Two or more characters one-up each other to absurd extremes

The Monologue Joke

Late night monologue jokes follow a tight formula: Setup: A news event or cultural moment (1-2 sentences max) Pivot: The turn toward comedy (often "but," "apparently," or "which means") Punchline: The joke (the shortest, most surprising element)

Example structure: "[News event]. Apparently, [unexpected detail]. Which makes sense, because [absurd comparison or consequence]."

Writing the Late Night Packet

To get hired on a late night show, you submit a "packet" (writing sample). Typical packet:

Web Series Design Principles

• Hook in the first 10 seconds. Online audiences click away instantly.
• Self-contained episodes work better than serialized for discovery (new viewers at any episode)
• One location is not a limitation --- it is a sitcom. Constraints breed creativity.
• Short and tight. Every second must earn its place.

Spec Scripts

What Is a Spec Script?

An episode of an existing show written to demonstrate you can capture an established voice and format. Used for fellowship applications (Disney/ABC, Warner Bros., NBC) and as writing samples.

Spec Script Rules

• Choose a current show. Not a classic. Not a cancelled show. A show that is on the air or recently ended.
• Choose a show you know deeply. You need to nail every character's voice.
• Do not write a "very special episode." Write a typical, solid episode.
• Do not change the status quo. No one dies, breaks up permanently, or reveals a major secret. Your spec exists within the show's world.
• Hit every character. Give each regular character something to do.
• Nail the format. If the show is 22 minutes single-cam, write 28-34 pages in single-cam format. Match the show's act structure exactly.

Original Pilot vs Spec

• Spec: Shows you can write in someone else's voice. Used for fellowships and some staffing.
• Original pilot: Shows your unique voice and vision. Used for staffing and selling shows.
• You need both in your portfolio.

Comedy Writing Exercises

Daily jokes: Write 10 jokes about today's news. Every day. Volume produces quality. Scene work: Write a 2-page comedic scene between two characters with opposing goals. No stage directions --- comedy must live in the dialogue. Sketch of the week: Write one complete sketch per week. Time it by reading aloud. The funny is found in revision, in pushing past the obvious, in asking "what is the unexpected version of this?" over and over until something surprises you. If it surprises you, it will surprise the audience. And surprise is the heart of laughter.
