Joke Structure

The Fundamental Mechanic: Setup and Punchline

Every joke, at its core, creates an expectation and then violates it.

Setup: Establishes a pattern, assumption, or direction. The audience's brain starts predicting where you're going.

Punchline: Shatters the prediction. The surprise (delivered correctly) produces laughter.

Example:

• Setup: "I told my wife she was drawing her eyebrows too high."
• Punchline: "She looked surprised."

The setup creates a mental image of a conversation between spouses. The punchline reframes "surprised" from an emotion to a physical description. This reframing - the sudden shift in meaning - is what produces the laugh.

Key Joke Mechanics

The Rule of Three

Present two items that establish a pattern, then break it with the third.

Example: "I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food."

The list structure (implied): cooking ingredient, cooking ingredient, drinking. The third item breaks the established category.

Example (classic structure): "I speak three languages: English, profanity, and the language of love. Actually, just the first two."

Misdirection

Lead the audience's mind in one direction, then snap to another.

Setup direction: "My grandfather died peacefully in his sleep." Expected continuation: ...unlike the violent deaths we hear about Actual punchline: "Unlike the screaming passengers in his car."

The setup creates comfort; the punchline violently reframes the entire scenario.

Callback

Reference an earlier joke or detail later in the set/sketch. Creates a sense of cohesion and rewards the audience for paying attention. The callback gets a bigger laugh than the original joke because it carries accumulated context.

How to use callbacks:

1. Establish a strong joke or memorable detail early
2. Let time pass (other material in between)
3. Reference the earlier detail in an unexpected new context
4. The further removed and more surprising the callback, the bigger the payoff

The Tag (Topper)

An additional punchline that follows the initial one, building on the same setup. Good tags extend the laugh without needing a new setup.

Original joke: "I asked my doctor how long I had to live. He said 'ten.' I said 'Ten what? Years? Months?' He said 'nine.'"

Tag possibilities after the initial laugh:

• "Eight..."
• "He's also my accountant."

Act-Out

Physically embodying a character or scenario. In written comedy, this translates to vivid, specific scene-painting that lets the audience "see" the scenario play out.

Exaggeration (Heightening)

Take a real observation and push it to an absurd extreme. The exaggeration should be proportional - too little and it's not funny, too much and it's unbelievable.

Observation: Waiting rooms are boring. Exaggeration: "I've been in my doctor's waiting room so long I've seen three other patients age into needing hip replacements."

The "Game" of a Joke or Scene

In improv and sketch comedy, the "game" is the central comedic pattern - the one unusual thing about the scene. Once you find the game, you heighten it with each beat.

Example game: A support group where everyone's addiction is something wholesome.

• Beat 1: "Hi, I'm Steve, and I'm addicted to helping elderly neighbors."
• Beat 2: "I can't stop volunteering at animal shelters. I've lost everything."
• Beat 3 (heightened): "I remortgaged my house to fund a community garden. My wife left me. But those tomatoes are thriving."

Each beat follows the same pattern but escalates the absurdity.

Types of Humor

Observational Comedy

Finding the funny in everyday life. "Have you ever noticed...?" The art is in the specificity of the observation.

Self-Deprecating Comedy

Comedy Timing

In Performance

• The Pause: The beat before the punchline. Creates anticipation. Too short and the audience isn't ready; too long and you lose them.
• The Beat After: Let the laugh breathe. Don't step on your laugh. Wait.
• Pace variation: Fast setups followed by a slow, deliberate punchline (or vice versa) create rhythmic surprise.

In Writing

• Sentence length controls timing. Short sentence = punchline. Long, winding setups build anticipation and make the short punch hit harder.
• Paragraph breaks are pauses. Use white space as timing.
• Word order matters. The funny word should come last in the sentence. Always end on the laugh word.

Bad word order: "Surprised is how she looked." Good word order: "She looked surprised."

The punchline word ("surprised") should be the last thing the reader encounters.

The "K" Sound Theory

Words with hard consonant sounds (K, hard G, hard C, P, T) tend to be perceived as funnier. "Duck" is funnier than "swan." "Pickle" is funnier than "olive." This isn't a law, but it's a useful tool.

Stand-Up Set Building

Writing a Five-Minute Set (Open Mic Level)

1. Choose 3-5 strong topics that you have genuine opinions or observations about
2. Write 10-15 jokes per topic - you'll keep the best 3-5 from each
3. Arrange by energy: Start with your second-strongest bit (warm up the audience), build through the middle, end with your strongest (leave them laughing)
4. Memorize the beats, not the exact words. Know your setups and punchlines, but allow natural delivery to vary.
5. Time yourself. Five minutes is shorter than you think. Most comics speak 120-150 words per minute, plus laugh time.

Set Structure for Longer Performances

• Opening (1-2 min): Establish your persona. Quick, reliable laughs. Build rapport.
• First chunk (5-7 min): A strong thematic section. Multiple jokes building on one idea.
• Transition: A bridge or quick one-liner that shifts topics.
• Second chunk (5-7 min): Different energy or topic. Variety keeps the audience engaged.
• Callback section: Weave in references to earlier material. Creates a sense of cohesion.
• Closer (2-3 min): Your absolute best material. Leave the audience on a high. A callback to the opener can be powerful.

Testing Material

• Record every set. Audio at minimum, video if possible.
• Track what works: Mark jokes that consistently get laughs across multiple audiences.
• Kill what doesn't work: If a joke fails three times with three different audiences, it needs major reworking or cutting.
• Note the laugh level: Chuckle, solid laugh, or big laugh? You want to build toward big laughs.
• Test in low-stakes environments first: Open mics, small shows, friend groups.

Sketch Writing

Sketch Structure

The premise: One unusual thing about the world. Everything else is grounded in reality.

Basic sketch structure:

1. Establish the base reality (30 seconds - 1 minute)
2. Introduce the game - the one unusual/funny thing
3. Heighten the game - escalate through 3-5 beats, each more absurd
4. Blow/Blackout - end at the peak of absurdity or with a final twist

Sketch Writing Principles

• One game per sketch. Don't introduce a second weird thing.
• Ground the straight man. The humor comes from the contrast between the absurd element and the normal reaction.
• Heighten, don't wander. Each beat should escalate the same game, not explore a new direction.
• End strong. Cut the sketch at the funniest possible moment. Most sketches run too long.
• The "if this is true, what else is true?" question. Once you establish the game, explore its logical (absurd) implications.

Sketch Length

• Short form (SNL, internet): 3-5 minutes
• Long form (sketch show episode): 5-10 minutes
• Vine/TikTok/Reels: 15-60 seconds - distill to the core game and one escalation

Comedic Character Creation

Building a Funny Character

1. Core trait (the engine): What one quality drives everything they do? (Oblivious confidence, desperate people-pleasing, paranoid suspicion, unbridled optimism)
2. Worldview: How do they see the world differently from everyone else?
3. Blind spot: What obvious thing can they not see about themselves?
4. Status: Are they high-status (confident, authoritative) or low-status (nervous, deferential)? The gap between their status and reality is comedic.
5. Specificity: The more specific and detailed, the funnier. Don't write "a dumb person" - write "a person who is extremely confident about incorrect facts."

The Comedy Character Formula

Funny character = strong point of view + blind spot + commitment

The character must fully believe in their worldview. The comedy comes from the audience seeing what the character cannot.

Writing for Different Mediums

Social Media / Short Form

• Front-load the funny - you have 1-3 seconds to hook
• Visual gags and physical comedy play well
• Relatable > clever (for engagement)
• Format the text for the platform (threads, captions, carousel posts)

Late Night / Topical

• Speed matters - write within hours of the news event
• Setup = the real news. Punchline = the comedic take.
• "What's the REAL story here?" Find the human absurdity in current events.

Sitcom / TV Comedy

• Character-driven humor (the situation is funny because of who these people are)
• A-plot, B-plot, and sometimes C-plot per episode
• The "runner" - a recurring gag that builds through the episode

• Character arc still matters - the audience needs to care

Comedy Exercises

Exercise 1: The "What If?" Game

Take a mundane situation and ask "What if?" Push it to three levels of absurdity.

Exercise 2: The Joke-a-Day

Write one complete joke (setup + punchline) every day for 30 days. Not every joke will be good. That's the point.
