Sequential Storytelling Fundamentals

How Comics Work

Comics communicate through the relationship between panels. The reader constructs the story in the space between panels (the gutter). Your job as a comic creator is to control what the reader fills in:

• Panel-to-panel transitions: The way one panel connects to the next defines the reading experience
  • Action to action: The most common. Shows a subject performing a sequential action (reach for door > open door)
  • Subject to subject: Moves between different subjects within a scene (character A speaking > character B reacting)
  • Scene to scene: Jumps to a different time or location (office interior > exterior street the next morning)
  • Moment to moment: Very small time jumps for slow, detailed sequences (eyes opening > eyes fully open)
  • Aspect to aspect: Different aspects of the same scene or mood (rain on window > empty chair > cold coffee)

The 180-Degree Rule in Comics

Maintain consistent spatial orientation. If character A is on the left and B is on the right in one panel, maintain that arrangement throughout the scene unless you deliberately establish a new orientation with a wide shot.

Reading Flow

Western comics read left to right, top to bottom. Manga reads right to left. Design your panel layout and dialogue placement to support the intended reading direction:

• The first element the reader should see in each panel should be at the entry point (top-left for Western, top-right for manga)
• Dialogue balloons guide reading order. The first balloon should be highest and leftmost in the panel.
• If the reader has to backtrack or is confused about which panel comes next, the layout has failed.

Plot Method (Marvel Method)

The writer provides a plot summary, and the artist decides the page and panel breakdown:

• Writer creates a prose summary of each page or scene
• Artist interprets the plot visually, determining pacing and composition
• Writer adds dialogue after seeing the artwork
• Requires strong trust and communication between writer and artist

Script Best Practices

• One panel description per panel. Be clear about what is visible.
• Limit dialogue to 25-35 words per balloon and 2-3 balloons per panel
• Describe only what can be seen or heard. Comics cannot convey smell, internal thought (without captions), or off-panel events.
• Note which characters and elements must be visible in each panel
• Indicate panel size and emphasis (wide, tall, small, splash page) but trust the artist with exact layout

Page Composition

Panel Layout Fundamentals

• Grid layouts (2x3, 3x3, 2x4): Clear, readable, reliable. Good for dialogue scenes and establishing rhythms.
• Variable grid: Panels of different sizes on the same page. Larger panels emphasize important moments.
• Splash page: A single image fills the entire page. Reserved for the most dramatic or spectacular moments.
• Double-page spread: A single image across two pages. Maximum impact. Use very sparingly.
• Borderless/full bleed: Panel art extends to the edge of the page with no border. Creates immersion and energy.
• Overlapping panels: Panels that break the grid and overlap. Creates dynamic energy but can confuse reading order if not handled carefully.

Panel Size and Pacing

Panel size controls time and emphasis:

• Large panels: Slow down time. Give the reader time to absorb detail. Emphasize significance.
• Small panels: Speed up time. Quick beats, rapid action, staccato rhythm.
• Wide panels: Establish space, show landscapes, emphasize horizontal movement or calm.
• Tall panels: Emphasize vertical movement, height, falling, confrontation.
• Equal-sized panels: Create a steady, metronomic rhythm. Good for building tension or mundane routines.
• Progressively smaller panels: Accelerate pacing toward a climax.
• A large panel following several small ones: Maximum impact. The payoff after buildup.

Page Rhythm

Think of each page as a unit of storytelling:

• Each page should have a clear focal panel (the most important moment on that page)
• The last panel on a right-hand page is the "page turn" panel -- it should create a question or tension that makes the reader turn the page
• Vary the panel count per page: 3-panel pages feel spacious, 6-panel pages feel dense, 9-panel pages create intensity

Character Design for Comics

Design Principles

Characters must be instantly recognizable across many panels and pages:

• Distinct silhouettes: Each character should have a unique overall shape that is identifiable in silhouette. Tall and thin vs. short and round vs. average with distinctive hair.
• Consistent features: Define the key features (face shape, hairstyle, build, distinctive marks) and maintain them consistently.
• Character sheets: Create a reference sheet for each character showing front, side, and three-quarter views. Include notes on height relative to other characters.
• Expressions: Design a range of expressions for key characters. Comics rely heavily on facial expression for emotion.

Design for Reproduction

• Characters will be drawn hundreds of times. Overly complex designs lead to inconsistency and slow production.
• Simplify details that must be drawn repeatedly (hair, clothing patterns, accessories)
• Use distinctive shapes and proportions rather than detail to differentiate characters
• Consider how the character reads at different panel sizes (a tiny detail that works in a close-up may vanish in a wide shot)

Costume and Props

• Clothing should reflect character personality, status, and the story's setting
• Use color distinctively: character A always wears blue, character B always wears red
• Props should be visually interesting and consistently designed (a character's signature weapon, vehicle, or tool)
• Avoid real-world brand logos unless relevant to the story

Inking Techniques

Traditional Inking

• Brush inking: A sable or synthetic brush with India ink. Produces organic, expressive lines with thick-to-thin variation. The classic comic book look. Difficult to master.
• Pen nib inking: A dip pen (crow quill, hunt 102) with India ink. Fine, precise lines. Good for detail work and hatching.
• Technical pens: Micron, Copic Multiliner. Consistent line weight. Good for beginners and for mechanical/architectural subjects.
• Marker inking: Brush-tip markers (Pentel Pocket Brush, Kuretake). Convenient, portable, good line quality.

Digital Inking

• Clip Studio Paint: The best digital inking experience. Line stabilization, vector layers, adjustable lines after drawing.
• Procreate: Natural brush feel, excellent for stylistic inking
• Photoshop: Capable but lacks the specialized comic tools of Clip Studio
• Brush settings for digital inking: Enable pressure sensitivity for line width. Moderate smoothing/stabilization (10-30%) helps clean up shaky lines without feeling robotic.

Line Weight Principles

• Thicker lines: Outlines of characters and major forms, foreground elements, shadows
• Thinner lines: Interior details, background elements, textures, distant objects
• Weight variation: Thicker on the shadow side, thinner on the light side of a form
• Consistent hierarchy: Main characters have the thickest outlines. Background elements have the thinnest. This creates depth and readability.

Techniques for Shading in Ink

• Hatching: Parallel lines. Closer together = darker. Direction follows the form of the object.
• Cross-hatching: Overlapping sets of hatching at angles. Creates darker values and texture.
• Spotting blacks: Filling areas with solid black. Creates dramatic contrast and mood. Decide where blacks go before inking -- it is a compositional decision.
• Feathering: Lines that taper from thick to thin, transitioning from shadow to light. Classic comic technique.
• Stippling: Dots of varying density. Time-consuming but creates unique textures.

Coloring

Flatting

The first step in digital coloring:

1. Under the ink layer, create a flat color for every distinct area (skin, hair, shirt, pants, background)
2. Each area should be a unique, clean flat color with no blending or rendering
3. Use the magic wand or lasso tool to select areas, then fill
4. Flats make it easy to select any element for rendering later (select the skin flat > paint highlights and shadows within that selection)

Rendering Approaches

• Flat color (no rendering): Clean, graphic look. The flats are the final colors. Common in indie comics, newspaper strips, and graphic novels. Simple and effective.
• Cel shading: One shadow tone and one highlight tone per color. Clean, classic comic look. Defines form without complexity.
• Painterly rendering: Fully rendered with smooth gradients, multiple values, and atmospheric lighting. Time-consuming but visually rich.
• Limited palette: Use a restricted color palette (4-6 colors) for stylistic cohesion and speed.

Color for Storytelling

• Mood through palette: Warm palettes for comfort, safety, nostalgia. Cool palettes for isolation, tension, melancholy.
• Time of day: Warm yellows for day, blue-purples for night, golden for sunset.
• Character association: Assign a dominant color to each character. The reader subconsciously associates that color with the character.
• Narrative shifts: Change the palette to signal scene changes, flashbacks, dream sequences, or emotional shifts.
• Focus through color: Saturated colors for focal points, desaturated for backgrounds and secondary elements.

Lettering

Dialogue Balloons

• Shape: Oval or rounded rectangle for standard speech. Jagged or spiky for shouting. Cloudy for thought. Rectangular with a dashed border for electronic/digital voice. Whisper balloons are often dashed outlines.
• Tail: Points toward the speaker's mouth. Never ambiguous about who is speaking.
• Placement: Top of the panel, positioned to guide reading order. First speaker's balloon should be highest and leftmost.
• Space: Leave room for balloons when composing panels. Lettering should not cover important art.

Typography

• Comic fonts: Use fonts designed for comics (Blambot offers many free options). Avoid standard system fonts.
• Size: 5-7pt for print comics at final size. Larger for digital. Legibility is the priority.
• Bold and italics: Bold for emphasis within dialogue. Italics for internal thoughts, off-panel speech, or whispered text.
• Sound effects (SFX): Hand-lettered or stylized fonts that match the sound's character. BOOM is heavy and large. drip drip is small and italic.
• Captions: Rectangular boxes for narration, internal monologue, or location/time indicators. Different color or style from dialogue balloons.

Lettering Best Practices

• Letter before adding color. Lettering placement affects composition and should be considered alongside the art.
• Maximum 25-35 words per balloon. If it is longer, split into multiple balloons.
• Maximum 2-3 balloons per panel for readability.
• Never let a balloon tail cross another balloon.
• Center text within balloons with consistent margins.
• Read all dialogue aloud to check natural flow and pacing.

Production Workflow

1. Script: Written and finalized
2. Thumbnails: Tiny rough sketches of each page (2x3 inches). Plan panel layout, composition, and pacing.
3. Pencils: Full-size rough drawings. Establish anatomy, perspective, and detail.

Realistic production times for a single page (solo creator):

• Thumbnails: 15-30 minutes
• Pencils: 2-4 hours

• Lettering: 30-60 minutes
• Total: 7-13 hours per page

For a 24-page issue at 10 hours per page = 240 hours. At 2 hours per day, that is 120 days (4 months). Planning is essential.

Maintaining Consistency

• Use character sheets and reference them constantly
• Keep a style guide for recurring locations and objects
• Review previous pages before starting new ones
• Batch similar tasks: pencil all pages, then ink all pages. This builds momentum and consistency.

Distribution

Webcomic Publishing

• Platforms: Webtoon (largest audience for vertical scroll), Tapas, ComicFury, your own website
• Format: Vertical scroll format for mobile (Webtoon standard: 800px wide, unlimited height). Traditional page format for desktop-oriented webcomics.
• Schedule: Consistent upload schedule is essential. Weekly is standard. Communicate any breaks.
• Monetization: Ad revenue (Webtoon, Tapas), Patreon for early access and bonus content, merchandise, print editions.

Print Publishing
