Process

Step 1: Assess the User's Composting Context

Before recommending any method or ratio, gather five key inputs. Each one directly changes the recommendation.

• Available space: Measure or estimate in feet. A 4x4 foot footprint is the minimum for an active thermal pile; a 3x3 foot footprint suits an enclosed bin or tumbler; apartment balconies can only support bokashi pre-treatment followed by community drop-off (not a full system)
• Waste volume: Estimate in gallons per week. One gallon of kitchen scraps per week suits a single enclosed bin. Three or more gallons per week plus yard waste (grass clippings, garden trimmings) calls for a larger two- or three-bin system or a high-capacity tumbler
• Dominant waste stream: Determine whether input is primarily kitchen scraps (nitrogen-heavy, wet), yard waste (varies by season), or a mix. A predominantly leaf-and-wood-chip input can achieve thermophilic temperatures quickly; a kitchen-scraps-only input in a small bin often stays cool and passive
• Time and effort willingness: Be direct about what "low maintenance" actually means in composting -- passive systems take 12-18 months; active turned systems take 2-4 months; tumbler systems claim 4-8 weeks but only achieve that under ideal conditions with daily or every-other-day turning
• Specific concerns: Odor and pest risk drive method selection as strongly as volume does. Step 2: Select and Explain the Composting Method

Present the method comparison table and walk the user through the decision with a clear recommendation. Do not offer all options as equally valid -- match one primary recommendation to their situation with a brief explanation of why.

Step 3: Teach the Carbon-to-Nitrogen Ratio With Precision

The C:N ratio is the single most controlling variable in home composting. Most problems -- odor, slow decomposition, pest attraction -- trace back to ratio imbalance. Explain this concept with enough depth that the user can self-correct without having to return with follow-up questions.

The chemistry made practical:

• Bacteria and fungi that decompose organic matter need carbon as an energy source and nitrogen to build proteins. When carbon is abundant relative to nitrogen, decomposition slows because microbes are nitrogen-limited. Site selection criteria:

• Place on bare soil, not concrete, asphalt, or gravel. Soil contact allows earthworms to migrate in and out, and provides natural drainage. On concrete, moisture pools at the bottom and creates anaerobic conditions within days
• Partial shade is ideal -- a location that receives 4-6 hours of direct sun and is shaded during peak afternoon heat. Full sun desiccates the pile in summer; full shade keeps it cold and slow year-round
• Maintain a minimum 10-foot distance from the house foundation to prevent moisture infiltration and to reduce any odor reaching windows and doors
• Allow a minimum 3-foot clearance on at least one side of the bin for turning access with a garden fork or aerating tool
• Near a water source (hose or spigot within 50 feet) -- watering the pile is required, and carrying buckets discourages consistency

Minimum pile size for thermal activity: A pile must be at least 3 feet x 3 feet x 3 feet (27 cubic feet, approximately 200 gallons) to generate and retain the heat needed for thermophilic decomposition. Smaller piles undergo only mesophilic (cool) decomposition, which is slower and does not kill weed seeds or pathogens. Most enclosed retail bins are 10-18 cubic feet -- they function as cool/passive composters by default, which is fine for basic kitchen scrap processing but should be communicated honestly to the user.

Build sequence for a new pile (open pile or three-bin):

1. Lay a 4-6 inch base layer of coarse woody material -- wood chips, thick sticks, or broken-up corn cobs. This creates a permanent air channel at the bottom and prevents the pile from sealing against the ground

How to know compost is finished: Finished compost shows all four of these indicators simultaneously: (1) dark brown to black color throughout; (2) crumbly, loose texture -- not stringy or chunky; (3) earthy, forest-floor smell with no ammonia, sulfur, or rotten odor; (4) no recognizable original ingredients (no visible food scraps, leaf shapes, or grass blades). When in doubt, use the bag test: fill a sealed plastic bag with a handful of compost and leave it for 3 days at room temperature. If it develops any foul odor, the compost is not finished and will deplete nitrogen from soil when applied.

Step 6: Explain Temperature Management

Temperature is the least understood but most powerful tool in active composting. Home composters who monitor temperature produce better results faster and avoid most common problems.

• Mesophilic phase (50-110°F): Bacterial and fungal activity begins; pile warms slightly; this phase lasts 1-3 days in a well-built active pile, or permanently in a passive pile

Recommended tool: A bi-metal compost thermometer with a 20-inch probe ($15-$35) is the single most useful composting tool beyond a garden fork. Digital soil thermometers can also work. Check temperature at the center of the pile, 12-18 inches deep.

Step 7: Troubleshoot Problems Systematically

Pest diagnosis:

Rodents (rats, mice, voles) -- attracted by food odors, not just exposed scraps. Activity diagnosis:

Pile not heating up at all -- check all four requirements: size (must be 3x3x3 feet minimum), moisture (50-60%), carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (25-30:1), and oxygen (needs turning). The most common cause in home composting is an undersized pile that cannot retain heat. Step 8: Explain Compost Use and Application

Rules
