When to Use

Process

1. Step 1: Assess user current credit situation: score range, credit history length, current accounts
2. Step 2: Explain the five FICO scoring factors and their weights
3. Step 3: Identify the highest-impact improvement actions for user situation
4. Step 4: Create a credit improvement timeline with specific monthly actions
5. Step 5: Explain how to monitor progress and avoid common credit mistakes

Purpose

This skill helps users understand, monitor, and improve their credit scores. It provides actionable strategies for building credit from scratch, optimizing existing scores, disputing errors, and avoiding common pitfalls that damage creditworthiness.

Questions to Ask the User First

1. Current score: Do you know your FICO score or VantageScore? From which source?
2. Credit history length: How long have you had credit? What was your first account?
3. Current accounts: How many credit cards, loans, and other credit accounts do you have?
4. Credit utilization: What are your current balances and credit limits on revolving accounts?
5. Payment history: Have you ever missed a payment (30+ days late)?
6. Negative items: Are there any collections, bankruptcies, foreclosures, or judgments on your report?
7. Recent applications: How many hard inquiries in the last 2 years?
8. Goal: Why do you want to improve your score? (Mortgage, car loan, rental application, general improvement)
9. Timeline: When do you need the improved score by?
10. Credit monitoring: Do you currently monitor your credit? Which service?

FICO Score Components

The FICO score (300-850) is used by 90% of top lenders. It is built from five components:

1. Payment History (35%) -- Most Important

• Every on-time payment helps; every late payment hurts
• Late payments are categorized: 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 120+ days, collections, charge-off
• More recent late payments hurt more than older ones
• A single 30-day late payment can drop a good score by 60-110 points
• Late payments stay on your report for 7 years but impact fades over time

Action items:

• Set up autopay for at least the minimum on every account
• Set calendar reminders 5 days before due dates
• If you miss a payment, pay it immediately -- if under 30 days late, it may not be reported
• Call the creditor and ask for a goodwill adjustment if you have a strong history

2. Credit Utilization (30%) -- Most Actionable

Credit utilization = total balances / total credit limits on revolving accounts.

TARGETS:
  Excellent: Under 10% overall AND per card
  Good: Under 30% overall AND per card
  Fair: Under 50%
  Poor: Over 50%

  OPTIMAL for maximum score: 1-3% utilization (not 0%)

Optimization strategies:

1. Pay down balances (obviously)
2. Request credit limit increases (increases denominator)
3. Make payments before statement closing date (balance reported is statement balance)
4. Spread charges across multiple cards rather than maxing one
5. Keep zero-balance cards open (they contribute to total available credit)
6. Use the "AZEO" method: All Zero Except One -- pay all cards to zero, leave a small balance on one

3. Length of Credit History (15%)

• Average age of all accounts matters
• Age of oldest account matters
• Longer is better
• Never close your oldest credit card (even if you don't use it, put a small recurring charge on it)

4. Credit Mix (10%)

Lenders want to see you can handle different types of credit:

• Revolving credit (credit cards)
• Installment loans (car loans, student loans, personal loans)
• Mortgage
• Having 3-5 different account types is ideal
• Do NOT open accounts solely for credit mix -- only if you need them

5. New Credit / Inquiries (10%)

• Each hard inquiry (from applying for credit) can lower your score 5-10 points
• Multiple inquiries for the same type of loan within 14-45 days count as one (rate shopping)
• Hard inquiries fall off after 2 years
• Impact diminishes after 6-12 months
• Soft inquiries (checking your own score, pre-approvals) do NOT affect your score

Credit Score Ranges and What They Mean

Credit Building for Beginners

Starting from Zero (No Credit History)

Authorized User Strategy

Being added as an authorized user on someone else's credit card can:

• Add their account history to your report (including its age)
• Provide an immediate utilization improvement (their high limit, their low balance)
• Build your credit without needing your own approval

Requirements for this to work:

• The primary cardholder has excellent payment history on that card
• The card has low utilization
• The card issuer reports authorized users to the bureaus (most major issuers do)
• You do NOT need to use the card or even have the physical card

Risks:

• If the primary holder misses payments, it can hurt YOUR score too
• Only use this strategy with someone you trust completely

Credit Dispute Process

Step 1: Get Your Reports

• AnnualCreditReport.com -- free weekly reports from all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion)
• Review every line of every report
• Common errors: accounts that are not yours, incorrect balances, accounts reported as late that were not, closed accounts shown as open, duplicate accounts

Step 4: Follow Up

• Bureaus must investigate within 30 days (45 if you provide additional info)
• If the creditor cannot verify the item, it must be removed
• You will receive results in writing
• If the dispute is denied, you can re-dispute with additional evidence or file a complaint with the CFPB

• Credit Karma: Free VantageScore from TransUnion and Equifax, weekly updates
• Discover Credit Scorecard: Free FICO score, available to non-customers
• Most banks/cards: Many now provide free FICO scores on statements or apps
• Experian: Free Experian FICO score through their app

• New accounts opened in your name
• Hard inquiries you didn't authorize
• Address changes you didn't make
• Balance changes
• Public records

Fraud Alerts and Freezes

• Fraud alert (free): Requires lenders to verify your identity before opening new accounts; lasts 1 year (7 years for identity theft victims)
• Credit freeze (free): Completely blocks new credit applications; you must temporarily lift to apply for credit; strongest protection
• Recommended: Freeze your credit at all three bureaus and only unfreeze when you need to apply for credit

Avoiding Credit Damage

Do NOT:

1. Close old credit cards (kills history length and utilization)
2. Apply for multiple cards in a short period (unless doing a strategic "garden" plan)
3. Miss a payment -- ever (set up autopay for minimums immediately)
4. Max out any card, even if you pay it off monthly (statement balance is what gets reported)
5. Co-sign loans unless you are prepared to pay the full amount
6. Ignore collections -- negotiate, pay-for-delete, or dispute, but do not ignore
7. Use more than 30% of any single card's limit
8. Open store cards for the discount (hard inquiry, low limits, high utilization risk)

Month 1-3: Attack utilization (biggest quick win)

• Pay down Card 1 to below 30% of limit, then Card 2
• Target: both cards under 30% utilization
• Expected score impact: +40 to +60 points

Month 4-6: Build payment streak

• Set up autopay for minimums on every account (never miss again)
• The missed payment hurts less each month -- by month 18 its impact drops significantly

Month 7-12: Optimize and maintain

• Keep utilization under 10% for maximum score benefit
• Do NOT close old cards (length of history helps)

What NOT to Do

• Do NOT close your oldest card even if you stop using it
• Do NOT pay for credit repair services -- everything they do, you can do yourself

Edge Cases

• Incomplete information: Ask clarifying questions before proceeding. Do not assume details the user has not provided.
• Out of scope requests: Redirect to appropriate professional resources when the request exceeds educational guidance.
• Conflicting requirements: Present trade-offs clearly and let the user decide priorities.
