HIGH-CONTEXT (Japan, China, Arab countries, France, Spain):
What is NOT said matters as much as what is said
CHARACTERISTICS:
- Meaning embedded in context, relationship, tone, silence
- Indirect communication (hints, suggestions, implications)
- "No" is rarely said directly
- Reading the air (kuuki wo yomu in Japanese)
- Long pauses are meaningful, not awkward
- Written contracts are less important than relationships
- Status and hierarchy affect message interpretation
HOW TO COMMUNICATE:
- Pay attention to what is NOT said
- Watch body language, tone, and facial expressions
- "That might be difficult" often means "No"
- "We will consider it" may mean "This is not going to happen"
- Ask open-ended questions and listen for indirect cues
- Build relationship before asking for direct answers
- Never force a direct "no" -- it causes loss of face
LOW-CONTEXT (Germany, USA, Scandinavia, Netherlands, Australia):
Meaning is in the explicit words spoken or written
CHARACTERISTICS:
- Direct, explicit communication expected
- Say what you mean, mean what you say
- Written agreements are binding
- Silence is uncomfortable
- Feedback is straightforward
- "No" is acceptable and expected when appropriate
HOW TO COMMUNICATE:
- Be clear and specific
- Put important information in writing
- Don't rely on hints or implications
- Ask directly for what you need
- Provide explicit instructions and expectations
- Follow up in writing after verbal agreements
Region-Specific Business Etiquette
East Asia
JAPAN:
Greetings: Bow (depth indicates respect level); business cards
(meishi) exchanged with both hands, studied carefully, never

(refusing hospitality is offensive). During Ramadan, do not
eat or drink in public during fasting hours
