Choose Your Approach

APPROACH A: CATEGORY-BASED (Best for full resets)
  Work through ALL items in a category at once, regardless of room.

The Decision Framework

For each item, use this progression:

LEVEL 1: OBVIOUS DECISIONS (do these first to build momentum)
  - Broken beyond repair? -> Release
  - Expired (food, medicine, cosmetics)? -> Release
  - Duplicate where one is clearly better? -> Release the inferior
  - Have not used or worn in 2+ years? -> Strong candidate for release

LEVEL 2: FUNCTIONAL DECISIONS
  - Do I use this regularly (at least yearly)?
  - Does it serve a practical function in my current life?
  - Could I easily and affordably replace it if needed?
  - Is it the right size/fit/style for my current situation?

LEVEL 3: VALUE DECISIONS
  - Does this align with who I am NOW (not who I was or wish to be)?
  - Does keeping this serve my current life goals?
  - If I were moving, would I pack this?
  - If I were buying this today, would I choose it?

LEVEL 4: EMOTIONAL DECISIONS (hardest - do last)
  - Can I honor the memory without keeping the object? (Photo it instead?)
  - Am I keeping this out of guilt (gift) or obligation (inherited)?
  - Would the person who gave it want me to feel burdened by it?
  - Can I keep one representative item instead of the entire collection?

The Four Destinations

Every item you touch goes to one of four places:

KEEP:      It serves a current, active purpose in your life
           -> Will be organized in Phase 2

DONATE:    It is in good condition; someone else can use it
           -> Box it, label with donation date, deliver within 48 hours

SELL:      It has meaningful monetary value AND you will actually list it
           -> Set a deadline (2 weeks); if not listed/sold by then, donate

DISCARD:   It is broken, expired, or cannot be donated
           -> Recycle where possible; trash the rest

Handling Sentimental Items

SENTIMENTAL ITEM STRATEGIES:

1. PHOTOGRAPH IT: Keep the memory, release the object.
   Take a photo, write a brief note about why it mattered.
   Store digitally in a "Memories" folder.

2. THE ONE-BOX RULE: Keep one designated box (standard size)
   for purely sentimental items. When the box is full,
   something must leave before something new enters.

3. REPURPOSE OR DISPLAY: If it is meaningful, use it or display it.
   Items hidden in boxes are not enriching your life.

4. THE LETTER TECHNIQUE: For items from loved ones,
   write a letter of gratitude as you release the item.
   "Thank you for this gift. I cherish the memory of you giving it to me.

Speed and Momentum Tips

- START WITH EASY CATEGORIES: Duplicates, expired items, obvious trash
  (This builds momentum and decision-making confidence)

- USE THE TIMER METHOD: Set a timer for 15-30 minutes.
  Decide and sort as many items as you can. Stop when the timer rings.
  (Prevents decision fatigue and marathon sessions that lead to burnout)

- THE "MAYBE" BOX: If you truly cannot decide, put the item in a
  sealed box with today's date. If you have not opened it in 6 months,
  donate the entire box unopened.

- DO NOT RE-ORGANIZE WHILE DECLUTTERING: These are separate phases.
  First reduce volume. Then organize what remains.

PRINCIPLE 1: EVERYTHING NEEDS A HOME
  Every item you keep must have a designated place.
  "Where does this live?" should have a clear answer for every possession.
  If you cannot assign a home, you may have too much for your space.

PRINCIPLE 2: STORE BY FREQUENCY OF USE
  Daily use:     Most accessible location (eye level, arm's reach)
  Weekly use:    Easy access (lower/higher shelves, nearby drawer)
  Monthly use:   Less convenient but still accessible
  Seasonal/rare: Storage areas (high shelves, closet back, garage)

PRINCIPLE 3: STORE WHERE YOU USE IT
  Keep cooking tools in the kitchen, not the dining room.
  Keep toiletries in the bathroom, not the bedroom.
  This sounds obvious but clutter often comes from things stored
  far from where they are used.

PRINCIPLE 4: LIKE WITH LIKE
  Group similar items together.
  All batteries in one place. All office supplies in one area.
  This prevents buying duplicates you already have.

PRINCIPLE 5: CONTAIN AND LABEL
  Use containers to create boundaries.
  A drawer full of loose items is chaos.
  A drawer with divided containers is a system.
  Label containers, even if it feels excessive. Labels prevent entropy.
