When to Use

Use this skill when the user's situation matches one of these triggers:

• User explicitly says they have too much stuff, feel overwhelmed by clutter, or cannot find things in their home
• User is preparing for a move (local or long-distance) and wants to reduce what they pack and transport
• User has experienced a major life transition -- divorce, a death in the family, an empty nest, downsizing to a smaller home, combining two households -- and needs to reconcile possessions
• User wants a method or system for deciding what to keep versus what to remove, and is not sure how to make those decisions
• User asks about a specific decluttering philosophy (KonMari, minimalism, Swedish death cleaning, the 20/20 rule) and wants help applying it to their home
• User wants to reduce spending by understanding what they already own, preventing duplicate purchases
• User is preparing a home for sale and wants to create a cleaner, more spacious appearance for showings
• User mentions a specific category that has gotten out of control -- a closet packed to the walls, a garage they can no longer park in, a spare room that became a storage room

Do NOT use when:

• User shows signs of hoarding disorder -- defined as significant distress at the thought of discarding any item, accumulation that blocks normal use of living spaces, or items that create safety hazards. Decluttering advice can cause psychological harm in these cases. Instead, acknowledge their situation with compassion, note that professional support is available through therapists who specialize in obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, and avoid suggesting any purging steps. (No cross-reference to a skill -- this requires clinical intervention.)
• User wants help with cleaning tasks like mopping floors, scrubbing bathrooms, or washing windows -- use weekly-cleaning-schedule
• User wants to reorganize how items are stored and arranged within a room -- choosing storage containers, optimizing drawer layouts, or rearranging furniture -- use room-organization-system

Process

Step 1 -- Gather the User's Situation Before Recommending Anything

Do not jump to a plan. Ask two or three targeted questions first. The answers determine the entire approach:

• Scope: Is this a single category (clothing, books), one room, or a full home? A full home is a multi-session project; a closet can be done in an afternoon.
• Time available: A free weekend (10-16 hours) allows a thorough category-based sweep. A few hours on weekday evenings calls for a room-by-room or zone-based approach over several weeks. "I have 20 minutes" calls for the 5-minute start technique applied to a single drawer.
• Primary driver: General simplification feels different from pre-move pressure, which feels different from grief-driven estate processing. Each has a different emotional register and different decision criteria.
• Household composition: Are there other adults, children, or elderly family members whose belongings are involved? Decluttering only works by consent -- no one can declutter another person's things.
• Past attempts: Has the user tried before and stalled? If yes, identifying where they stalled helps you prescribe the right method. Common stall points: sentimental items, overwhelming volume, "I might need it someday" thinking.

If the user just wants to start immediately without answering questions, default to the momentum-based approach starting with clothing, which has the highest success rate for first-time declutterers.

Step 2 -- Select and Explain the Appropriate Decluttering Method

Present the method that matches the user's situation. Do not list all methods and make them choose -- recommend one with a brief explanation of why.

Category-Based (Recommended for full-home declutters with at least a full day available):

• Popularized by Marie Kondo's KonMari method but used in many systems. The core insight is that you see the full scope of what you own only when you gather all instances of a category in one place.
• Standard category order: clothing -- books -- papers -- komono (miscellaneous: kitchen, bathroom, garage, hobby items, electronics) -- sentimental items. This order is deliberate: earlier categories build decision speed, and sentimental items require the sharpest judgment, so they come last.
• Best for: people who own a lot and want to do it once, thoroughly, rather than repeatedly

Room-Based (Recommended for time-constrained users or those who want visible progress quickly):

• Work through one room at a time to completion before moving to the next
• Recommended room order: bathroom (easiest decisions, fastest results, builds confidence) -- bedroom closets -- kitchen -- living room -- home office or papers -- storage areas and garage (hardest and most time-intensive)
• Best for: people with busy schedules who need tangible wins to stay motivated

Momentum-Based (Recommended for overwhelmed beginners or people who have stalled before):

• Start with the category or zone with the clearest decisions and lowest emotional weight
• Build confidence before moving to items with higher attachment
• The 5-minute start variation: commit to 5 minutes only. Nearly every user who starts continues past the timer. The mental contract is "I only have to do 5 minutes" -- this eliminates the activation energy barrier
• Best for: first-time declutterers, people with anxiety about the process, households with very high volume

Swedish Death Cleaning (Döstädning) Approach (Recommended for older adults, estate-related decluttering, or anyone who wants a legacy-conscious framework):

• Developed by Margareta Magnusson. The central question is not "does this spark joy" but "would anyone else want this after I'm gone, or will it become a burden?" This reframes decluttering as an act of consideration for the people you love.
• Works systematically through every room and category, beginning with large furniture and ending with photographs and letters (most personal items last)
• Particularly useful for users downsizing from a family home after children have left, or processing belongings after a loss

The 20/20 Rule (Supplementary technique for the "just in case" problem):

• Coined by minimalists Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus: if an item can be replaced for under $20 and in under 20 minutes, you do not need to keep it "just in case"
• Apply this test whenever a user hesitates on a utilitarian item out of scarcity thinking

Step 3 -- Establish the Decision Framework

Give the user clear, specific questions to ask of every item. Different item types have different primary criteria:

For clothing:

• Does it fit right now (not "when I lose weight," not "if I alter it")? If no, donate.
• Have you worn it in the last 12 months? If no, and it is not a true special-occasion item, donate.
• Does it require a repair or alteration you have been delaying for more than 6 months? It will not get done. Donate.
• Is it worn out, pilled, stained, or stretched? Discard (not donate -- donating wearable garbage shifts your burden onto a charity).

For books:

• Will you realistically reread it? "I might" without a specific reason means no.
• Is the information still accurate and not freely available online? Reference books from the 1990s rarely meet this standard.
• Are you keeping it because you feel you should have read it? Donate. The guilt associated with unread books does not improve with keeping them.

For kitchen items:

• Have you used it in the last 12 months? Single-use gadgets with a "no" are almost always donate candidates.
• Does it perform a function that another item you own already performs? Duplicate function = donate the inferior version.
• Is it damaged in a way that affects safety or hygiene (cracked non-stick coating, chipped ceramic, rust)? Discard.

For all categories -- the four universal tests:

1. 12-Month Test: Used in the last 12 months? (Seasonal and emergency items are exempt.)
2. Duplicate Test: Do you own more than one that does the same thing? Keep the best.
3. Replacement Test: If lost, would you buy it again at full price? If no, release it.
4. Space-Value Test: Does the value of keeping this item exceed the cost of the space it occupies and the mental load of managing it?

The "Decide Later" rule:

• Maximum 10% of total items evaluated may go in the Decide Later box
• The box must be sealed, labeled with today's date and a 2-week deadline, and placed somewhere inconvenient (not back in its original location)
• If not decided within 2 weeks, the default action is DONATE -- the delay signals low attachment
• No item may enter a second Decide Later cycle

Step 4 -- Set Up the Physical Sorting System Before Starting

A poor sorting setup is the single most common reason a declutter session turns into making a bigger mess. Have these physically ready before touching a single item:

• KEEP: A designated area where items sit temporarily before going back to their assigned home. Not a pile on the floor -- a cleared surface, a laundry basket, or a rolling cart.
• DONATE: Large garbage bags or cardboard boxes. Label them "DONATE" in large text. Bags are faster; boxes are better for fragile items. Pre-schedule the donation drop-off before starting the session -- having a departure deadline for items creates accountability.
• DISCARD: Separate bags from donation. Sub-sort if needed: recycling versus landfill trash versus hazardous waste (electronics, batteries, paint, medications have specific disposal requirements).
• SELL: Optional fourth active bin if the user wants to list items on secondhand platforms. Keep this bin small -- the commitment to actually listing and selling items must be realistic. Give items in the SELL bin a 30-day deadline; if not listed and sold, they move to DONATE.
• DECIDE LATER: One box only. One.
• RELOCATE: A basket for items that belong in a different room but are not declutter candidates. Do not stop to put these away mid-session -- toss them in the basket and put them away at the end.

Step 5 -- Execute the Declutter in the Correct Sequence

Provide the full sequence with time estimates. Time estimates assume average accumulation for a typical household; adjust upward 50% for someone who describes themselves as having "a lot of stuff" and downward 30% for someone moving from a small space or who declutters regularly.

Time estimates per category (one adult, moderate accumulation):

• Bathroom products and medicine cabinet: 30-60 minutes
• Clothing, shoes, and accessories (single person's wardrobe): 2-4 hours
• Books and media: 1-2 hours
• Kitchen (pantry, gadgets, dishes, small appliances): 2-3 hours
• Living room (decor, media, soft furnishings, games): 1-2 hours

• Bathroom linens and bedroom (non-clothing): 30-60 minutes
• Hobby items and sports equipment: 1-3 hours (highly variable)
• Garage, basement, and storage areas: 3-8 hours (highest variance -- can be 1 day alone)
• Sentimental items: 1-3 hours

Execution tactics within a session:

• Touch every single item -- do not just scan visually. The physical act of handling an object activates the decision process in a way that looking does not.
• Work quickly on the first pass. Aim for no more than 5-10 seconds per utilitarian item. Slowing down on non-sentimental items is where decision fatigue builds.
• Never leave the sorting area to put something away mid-session. Put KEEP items in the keep pile; put RELOCATE items in the relocate basket. Leaving the area breaks the session.
• Stop for genuine meals and water. Hunger and dehydration degrade decision quality, and the evidence for this in behavioral economics is robust.

Step 6 -- Handle Sentimental Items as a Separate Session

Sentimental items are the hardest category in every decluttering system. Address them with a specific framework -- never rush them, never tackle them first, and never let the user feel judged for keeping them.

The Memory Box method:

• Designate one container per person as the memory box. Standard size: one legal-size banker's box (10" x 12" x 15"), one under-bed storage bin, or one medium plastic tote. The container cannot grow -- this is the constraint.
• When the memory box is full and a new sentimental item needs to enter, something must leave. This is not cruelty -- it is a framework for honoring what matters most by making real choices.

Techniques for releasing sentimental items:

• Photo preservation: Photograph the item in good light before donating or discarding. The memory is preserved; the object is released. This works for children's artwork, greeting cards, inherited items, and memorabilia.
• Pass it on intentionally: Inherited items given to a family member who genuinely wants them carries a completely different emotional weight than donating to a stranger. Ask: "Is there someone in the family who would cherish this?" If yes, contact them before donating.
• Grief acknowledgment: When an item is connected to a loss, the difficulty of releasing it is not irrational -- it is appropriate grief. Acknowledge this directly. There is no rule that says a person must declutter grief-adjacent items on any particular timeline.
• The "best 10" technique: For categories with high volume and high sentiment (greeting cards, photos, children's drawings), the user does not need to keep everything or nothing. Keep the 10 most meaningful, photograph the rest.

Step 7 -- Execute the Exit Strategy Immediately

Clutter that is sorted but not removed is not decluttered. Items that stay in the house in bags tend to migrate back into rotation. The exit plan is as important as the sorting:

• Donation bags go to the car before the session ends. Not to the garage, not to the hallway -- to the car.
• Drop-off should happen within 48 hours of sorting. For users in areas without convenient donation centers, identify the closest drop-off location, confirm accepted items (most Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations have posted restrictions), and schedule it the same day.

Step 8 -- Install the Maintenance System

The most common decluttering failure is the accumulation rebound: 6-12 months after a thorough declutter, the home returns to its previous state because no behavioral change accompanied the purge.

The One-In-One-Out Rule:

• For every new item of a given type brought into the home, one item of similar type leaves. New coat = one coat donated. New book = one book donated. This is the single most impactful maintenance habit.

Rules

1. Never schedule sentimental items early in the process. Sentimental items must always come last in the sequence, in every method. 3. Legally protect the following -- never suggest discarding them under any circumstances: Tax records for the current year plus 7 prior years (IRS audit window). Vital documents: birth certificates, death certificates, marriage and divorce certificates, adoption records, naturalization certificates, Social Security cards. Financial: property deeds, mortgage documents, vehicle titles. Medical: vaccination records, surgical records, chronic condition documentation, advance directives, living wills. Legal: wills, trusts, power of attorney documents, beneficiary designations. Employment: pension documents, final pay stubs, Social Security earnings statements.

4. The Decide Later box has exactly two rules: maximum 10% of total items evaluated, and a hard 2-week deadline. There is no negotiation on the size of this box and no second Decide Later cycle. Items that complete a second cycle without a decision default immediately to DONATE. The purpose of the Decide Later category is to handle genuine uncertainty, not to create a parallel accumulation system.

5. Damaged items go in DISCARD, not DONATE. This is both an ethical and practical rule. Donation centers spend significant resources sorting and discarding items that donors should have discarded themselves. Stained, broken, worn-out, or incomplete items (puzzles with missing pieces, sets with missing components, electronics that do not power on) belong in the trash or appropriate recycling stream, not in a donation bag.

6. Exit logistics must be scheduled before the first item is sorted. A declutter session that ends with bags stacked in the hallway has not ended -- it has paused. Pre-scheduling the donation drop-off creates accountability and prevents the common failure mode of bags sitting for weeks until items drift back into rotation.

7. Recognize and respond differently to the three types of declutter paralysis: Decision fatigue (the user has been sorting for 3+ hours and every item feels hard) -- prescription is a genuine break of at least 20 minutes, food, water, and resumption tomorrow. Emotional attachment paralysis (the user cannot release items connected to a specific person or period) -- prescription is the memory box method, photo preservation, and explicit permission to keep what matters, not a deadline or volume target. Volume overwhelm (there is so much the user cannot face starting) -- prescription is the 5-minute start technique applied to one small container.

8. Apply the 20/20 rule to interrupt "just in case" hoarding. When a user hesitates on a utilitarian item with "but I might need it someday," apply the 20/20 test: replaceable for under $20 in under 20 minutes? Then the "just in case" cost is under $20. This is not a rule to override every hesitation -- it is a tool for releasing items where scarcity thinking, not genuine need, is the driver.

9. Decluttering is not organizing. A session that begins with "I want to declutter my closet" and ends with items reorganized into new storage bins without any items removed is a reorganizing session, not a decluttering session. Gently redirect users who are gravitating toward buying new storage before reducing volume. Adding storage capacity before reducing volume almost always leads to filling the new storage.

10. Accumulation rebound is predictable and must be addressed at the end of every session. Research on household goods accumulation shows that without behavioral change, most households return to pre-declutter clutter levels within 6-18 months. The maintenance section of the output is not optional or supplementary -- it is the difference between a one-time project and a lasting change. The one-in-one-out rule, nightly reset, and quarterly sweep must be part of every plan delivered.

Edge Cases

The user is emotionally overwhelmed and grieving -- estate or end-of-life context: When a user is processing belongings after a death or preparing their own belongings because of illness or age, the emotional context is fundamentally different from standard decluttering. Move more slowly. Acknowledge explicitly that there is no right speed and no obligation to release items before the user is ready. The Swedish Döstädning framework is well-suited here because it is explicitly organized around legacy and love rather than efficiency. Suggest spreading the work over weeks or months rather than a single weekend. Never use language framing keeping items as "failing to declutter." The goal is making intentional choices, not meeting a volume target. If the user mentions significant grief, pause the process entirely and ask if they would like to continue or address the emotional side first.

Shared household with different tolerances -- one partner is a keeper, one is a minimalist: This is one of the most common relationship friction points around home organization. Enforce the boundary clearly: each person declutters only what is unambiguously theirs. For shared items, a simple negotiation rule: either party can veto releasing an item. This asymmetry favors keeping, which is appropriate because the relationship is more important than any individual decluttering outcome. Suggest the minimalist partner start with their own items and demonstrate results before initiating conversations about shared spaces. Do not position this as a conflict to win.

Extreme volume -- a user describes a house full of accumulated belongings spanning decades: For very high-volume situations (a house where multiple rooms are largely inaccessible, storage units are rented to overflow, or the user estimates the project at 30+ hours), recommend a modified approach. First, do one pass through the entire home sorting only obvious discards -- broken items, clear trash, things even the user identifies immediately as waste. This first pass often removes 10-20% of the volume without any difficult decisions. Then begin the category or room sequence. Set realistic expectations: a truly high-volume home may require 4-8 full sessions over 2-4 months. Professional organizer support (not clinical, just practical organizing assistance) is appropriate to suggest here and does not imply a hoarding disorder.

Preparing for a move with a hard deadline: The decision framework shifts under time pressure. The primary question becomes: "Is this worth the cost to pack, move, and unpack?" For a local move, the actual cost per box is roughly $5-15 (materials, labor, truck fraction). For a long-distance move, the cost per pound matters more -- professional movers typically charge $0.50-$1.00 per pound for long-distance moves, meaning a 50-pound box of books costs $25-50 to transport. Frame decisions in these terms: "This bag of old clothes is worth about $0 but costs $10 to move. If you wouldn't pay $10 to move it, you shouldn't move it." Use the speed-sort technique: no more than 5 seconds per item on the first pass. First instinct is usually correct. For a move-specific declutter, aim to process every room in the house in 2-4 sessions over a single week, with donation drop-offs and trash runs happening daily during the process.

User is decluttering on behalf of an elderly parent who is resistant: This situation requires particular delicacy. The user may have legitimate practical concerns (safety hazards, an upcoming move to assisted living, an estate that needs to be settled) but the parent retains full autonomy over their belongings as long as they are legally competent. Suggest the user frame conversations around helpfulness rather than decluttering: "Would it help if I organized this for you?" or "Let me sort through these papers to make sure the important ones are easy to find." The parent should make every keep/donate decision for their own items. The user's role is support and logistics, not decision-making. If there are genuine safety hazards (blocked pathways, fire hazards from accumulated materials), those specific items may need to be addressed directly and framed around safety.

The user has already decluttered multiple times with no lasting results: When a user reports that they have done thorough declutters before but the clutter always returns, this is a behavioral and accumulation pattern problem, not a sorting problem. Shift the focus from the declutter execution to the intake.
