Layer Management
Layer Strategy for Illustration
THE LAYER STACK (from bottom to top):
Background layer: Solid color or gradient
Rough sketch layer (opacity 20-30%): Initial gesture and composition
Refined sketch layer: Clean line drawing over the rough
Flat color layers: One layer per major color region
Shadow layer (Multiply blend mode): Core shadows
Light layer (Screen or Overlay blend mode): Highlights
Detail layers: Texture, patterns, final touches
Adjustment layers: Color correction, levels, curves
Line art layer (if keeping lines): Final clean lines on top
LAYER ORGANIZATION TIPS:
- Name every layer (you will overlook what "Layer 47" is)
- Group related layers (character group, background group, effects group)
- Use clipping masks to paint within boundaries of lower layers
- Lock transparent pixels when painting on flat color layers
- Merge layers you are finished with to reduce file size and clutter
- Save a backup file before flattening
CLIPPING MASKS (essential technique):
A clipping mask clips one layer to the content of the layer below it.
Paint a flat silhouette on Layer A.
Create Layer B above it, set as clipping mask.
Now painting on Layer B only appears within the silhouette of Layer A.
This is how you add shading and detail without worrying about edges.
Procreate: Tap layer, select "Clipping Mask"
Photoshop: Alt-click between layers, or Ctrl+Alt+G
Clip Studio Paint: Click the "Clip to Layer Below" icon
Blending Modes for Illustration
ESSENTIAL BLENDING MODES:
MULTIPLY:
Darkens everything. White becomes transparent.
Use for: Shadows, transparent overlays, color glazing
Technique: Create a new layer set to Multiply. Paint with a
single color (purple-grey works universally). This adds shadows
that interact naturally with the colors below.
SCREEN:
Lightens everything. Black becomes transparent.
Use for: Highlights, glowing effects, light sources
Technique: Paint with warm yellow/white on a Screen layer
to add light hitting surfaces.
OVERLAY:
Increases contrast. Darkens darks, lightens lights.
Use for: Dramatic lighting, mood shifts, color adjustments
Technique: Paint with warm colors to warm the light areas
and cool colors to cool the shadows in a single pass.
SOFT LIGHT:
Subtle version of Overlay. Gentler contrast boost.
Use for: Subtle color shifts, atmospheric effects
Technique: Fill a layer with a color, set to Soft Light at 20-40%
opacity to shift the entire mood of the illustration.
ADD (Linear Dodge):
Extremely bright. Creates intense glow effects.
Use for: Magic, fire, neon, bright light sources
Technique: Paint sparingly. A little goes a long way.
COLOR:
Changes hue and saturation without affecting luminosity.
Use for: Colorizing grayscale paintings, adjusting local color
Technique: Paint over a grayscale value painting to add color
while preserving all your shading work.
Brush Customization
Building Your Brush Kit
THE ESSENTIAL BRUSH KIT (4-6 brushes covers 90% of illustration):
1. SKETCHING BRUSH:
Texture: Slight grain (pencil-like)
Opacity: Pressure-sensitive
Size: Pressure-sensitive
Taper: Moderate (tapered endpoints)
Use: Rough sketches, gesture drawing, exploration
2. INKING BRUSH:
Texture: Smooth
Opacity: Full (no pressure transparency)
Size: Pressure-sensitive (thick to thin lines)
Taper: Strong (thin entry and exit, thick middle)
Use: Clean line art, outlines, linework
3. FLAT FILL BRUSH:
Texture: Minimal
Opacity: Full
Size: Large, not pressure-sensitive
Use: Laying down flat colors, filling shapes quickly
4. SOFT ROUND BRUSH:
Texture: None (perfectly smooth)
Opacity: Pressure-sensitive
Size: Pressure-sensitive
Use: Blending, soft shading, atmospheric effects, skin
5. TEXTURED PAINTING BRUSH:
Texture: Heavy grain or bristle texture
Opacity: Pressure-sensitive
Size: Moderate, pressure-sensitive
Use: Painterly rendering, adding texture, natural media feel
6. DETAIL BRUSH:
Small, precise, minimal texture
Use: Fine details, tiny highlights, texture dots, hair strands
BRUSH ADVICE:
Resist the urge to collect hundreds of brushes.
Master 4-6 brushes before adding more.
The brush does not make the art. Your hand and eye do.
The best illustrators often use the default round brush for 90% of their work.
Composition
Composition Frameworks
RULE OF THIRDS:
Divide the canvas into a 3x3 grid.
Place key elements at the intersection points.
Horizon lines on the horizontal thirds, not centered.
Most natural and reliable composition starting point.
GOLDEN RATIO / GOLDEN SPIRAL:
A spiral that guides the eye from the edge to the focal point.
Place the focal point at the tightest request of the spiral.
Creates a natural, dynamic flow through the image.
TRIANGLE COMPOSITION:
Arrange key elements in a triangular shape.
Creates stability (base at bottom) or tension (inverted triangle).
Strong for character portraits and group compositions.
LEADING LINES:
Use lines in the environment (roads, rivers, architecture, light rays)
to guide the viewer's eye toward the focal point.
Lines entering from corners are particularly effective.
FRAMING:
Use elements in the foreground to frame the subject.
Trees, doorways, windows, arches, or any surrounding element.
Creates depth and draws attention to the framed subject.
TANGENT AVOIDANCE:
A tangent is where two edges barely touch or align, creating
visual confusion. The viewer cannot tell if objects are in front
of or behind each other.
- Objects should clearly overlap or clearly separate
- Lines should not align accidentally at the edge of another shape
- Check for tangents at all stages of the illustration
THUMBNAIL PROCESS:
Before starting a final piece, create 6-12 small thumbnails (2-3 inches).
Black and white. 2-3 values only. Focus on:
- Where is the focal point?
- What is the value structure (dark, mid, light)?
- Does the eye flow naturally through the composition?
- Is there a clear hierarchy of elements?
Spend 2-5 minutes per thumbnail. Choose the strongest one to develop.
Color Theory Application
Practical Color for Illustrators
COLOR TEMPERATURE:
Warm colors (red, orange, yellow): Advance, feel close, energetic
Cool colors (blue, violet, green): Recede, feel far, calm
RULE: Warm light creates cool shadows. Cool light creates warm shadows.
Apply this consistently and your lighting will feel natural.
COLOR HARMONY SCHEMES:
Complementary: Two colors opposite on the wheel (high contrast)
Analogous: 2-3 colors adjacent on the wheel (harmonious, low contrast)
Triadic: Three colors equally spaced on the wheel (vibrant, balanced)
Split-complementary: One color + two adjacent to its complement (versatile)
LIMITED PALETTE EXERCISE:
Choose 3-5 colors maximum. Create an entire illustration using only
these colors and their mixtures. This teaches:
- Color relationships and mixing
- Value control (making colors work without relying on variety)
- Cohesion (limited palette always looks harmonious)
COLOR PICKING STRATEGY:
1. Start with a dominant color (sets the mood)
2. Add a secondary color (supports the dominant)
3. Add an accent color (small amount, high contrast, draws the eye)
4. Ratio: 60% dominant, 30% secondary, 10% accent
SATURATION MANAGEMENT:
Beginners oversaturate everything. Professional illustration uses
mostly muted colors with selective areas of high saturation.
- Background: Low saturation (pushes it back)
- Midground: Medium saturation
- Focal point: Highest saturation (pulls attention)
- Shadows: Shift hue, do not just darken (purple shadows, not black)
Digital Painting Workflow
The Value-First Approach
STEP 1: SKETCH (Line Layer)
Rough out composition and proportions.
Do not worry about cleanliness. Capture the energy.
Flip the canvas horizontally often to check proportions.
STEP 2: VALUE BLOCK-IN (Grayscale)
On a new layer below the sketch, block in values.
Use only 3-5 values: dark, mid-dark, mid, mid-light, light.
Establish the lighting direction and mood.
Squint at the image to check value relationships.
STEP 3: COLOR BLOCK-IN
Add color on top of the values using Color or Overlay blend mode.
Or start fresh with flat colors if you prefer.
Keep colors muted at this stage. You can always saturate later.
STEP 4: RENDERING
Refine edges, add details, build up texture.
Work from large shapes to small details.
Spend 80% of your rendering time on the focal area.
The periphery can remain loose and gestural.
STEP 5: FINAL PASS
Add highlights (Screen or Add layer)
Add atmospheric effects (fog, light rays, particles)
Color adjustments (Curves, Hue/Saturation, Color Balance)
Sharpen the focal area, soften the edges
COMMON DIGITAL PAINTING MISTAKES:
- Zooming in too early (work at 50% or less until the final pass)
- Rendering everything equally (focal point > periphery)
- Using pure black for shadows (use dark, saturated colors instead)
- Over-blending (keep some brush strokes visible for energy)
- Not flipping the canvas (hides proportion errors)
- Working without a value plan (color without value = muddy)

Every piece should represent the work you WANT to get hired for.
If you do not want to draw X, do not put X in your portfolio.

- Strong opening image (your best work, first impression)
- 3-4 pieces showing range within your specialty
- 2-3 pieces showing a series or consistent style
- 1-2 process pieces (sketch to final) showing your workflow
