Questions to Ask First
- What is the subject of your documentary?

- What equipment do you have or plan to use?

Research and Development
Research Methodology
PHASE 1: BROAD RESEARCH (2-4 weeks)
Read everything published about your subject.
Watch existing documentaries on the topic.
Build a source list:
- Primary sources: People directly involved
- Secondary sources: Journalists, scholars, community members
- Archival sources: News footage, photographs, documents, records
- Expert sources: Academics, professionals, analysts
OUTPUT: A research document with key facts, timeline of events,
list of potential characters, and open questions.
PHASE 2: PRE-INTERVIEWS (2-4 weeks)
Conduct informal conversations (not on camera) with potential subjects.
Purpose: Build trust, assess who is compelling on camera,
discover stories you cannot find in published sources.
EVALUATE EACH POTENTIAL SUBJECT:
- Are they articulate and comfortable sharing?
- Do they have a personal stake in the story?
- Can they provide unique access or perspective?
- Are they willing to be filmed over time?
- Do they represent a necessary viewpoint?
PHASE 3: STORY DEVELOPMENT
The treatment: A narrative document (5-15 pages) that describes
your film as if it already exists.
Include:
- Central question or thesis
- Main characters and their arcs
- Structure (acts, sequences, planned scenes)
- Visual approach (style, tone, aesthetic)
- Access plan (what you can film, when, where)
- Ethical considerations
Narrative Structure for Documentary
THREE-ACT STRUCTURE (adapted for documentary):
Act 1 (Setup): Introduce the world, characters, and central question.
What is the status quo? Why should the audience care?
Act 2 (Confrontation): Obstacles, complications, escalating tension.
What stands in the way? What happens that changes everything?
Act 3 (Resolution): Climax and reflection. What has changed?
Does not require a neat ending. Open questions are powerful.
ALTERNATIVE STRUCTURES:
Chronological: Events unfold in time order. Simplest structure.
Thematic: Organized around ideas, not timeline. Essay-style.
Character-driven: Follow one person's journey as the spine.
Multi-thread: Weave multiple stories that connect thematically.
Mystery/Investigation: Filmmaker uncovers truth alongside the audience.
Before/After: Show a transformation or change.
FINDING THE SPINE:
Your film needs one central narrative line that everything hangs on.
"This is a film about [character] who [wants/needs something]
but [obstacle] stands in the way."
Or: "This is a film that asks: [central question]."
Everything in the film should connect to the spine.
If a scene does not serve the spine, it does not belong.
Interview Technique
Interview Preparation
BEFORE THE INTERVIEW:
Research: Know your subject's background thoroughly.
Questions: Prepare 15-25 questions. Organize by theme, not chronology.
Start with easy questions (background, context) to build comfort.
Save difficult or emotional questions for after trust is established.
Write your questions as open-ended, not yes/no.
BAD: "Were you scared?" (Yes.)
GOOD: "Describe what you were feeling in that moment."
QUESTION TYPES:
Opening: "Tell me about yourself and how you came to be involved in..."
Descriptive: "Walk me through what happened that day."
Emotional: "How did that make you feel? What was going through your mind?"
Reflective: "Looking back now, what do you make of that experience?"
Challenging: "Some people would say [counterpoint]. How do you respond?"
Silence: Ask a question, get an answer, then wait. Do not rush to
the next question. The pause often produces the most honest moments.
TECHNICAL SETUP:
Camera: Eye level or slightly above. Off-center composition (rule of thirds).
Eyeline: Subject looks at interviewer, NOT at camera (unless intentional).
Interviewer position: Seated next to camera, on the side closer to
the subject's dominant eye. Subject looks across the frame, not out of it.
Background: Clean, relevant to the story, not distracting.
Lighting: Soft key light, fill to reduce shadows, edge/back light for depth.
Audio: Lavalier microphone on subject + boom mic as backup.
Record room tone: 30 seconds of silence for editing.
During the Interview
CONDUCTING THE INTERVIEW:
1. Chat before rolling to relax the subject. Then say "Let me just
roll camera so we do not miss anything" (casual, not formal).
2. Ask them to include the question in their answer:
"When you answer, try to include the essence of my question
so your response makes sense on its own."
Q: "When did you first realize something was wrong?"
A: "The first time I realized something was wrong was in June 2019..."
3. Let them talk. Do not interrupt. Nod but do not say "mm-hmm"
(it bleeds into their audio and is impossible to edit out).
4. Use silence. After they finish an answer, wait 3-5 seconds.
They will often add something more honest or emotional.
5. Follow the thread. If they say something unexpected and interesting,
abandon your question list and follow that story.
6. Ask "Is there anything I have not asked that you think is important?"
This often produces the best material in the interview.
7. Keep the camera rolling after you say "I think we got it."
The post-interview moment is when guards drop and truth emerges.
INTERVIEW LENGTH:
Plan for 45-90 minutes of recording per subject.
You will use 3-5 minutes of a 60-minute interview in the final film.
Longer interviews yield better material. Do not rush.
B-Roll and Verite
B-Roll Strategy
B-ROLL CATEGORIES:
1. Establishing shots: Wide shots that set the location and context
2. Detail shots: Close-ups of hands, objects, textures, environments
3. Process shots: Subject doing their work, daily routine, skills
4. Environmental shots: The world around the subject (neighborhood,
workplace, natural surroundings)
5. Metaphorical shots: Images that carry symbolic meaning
6. Archival integration: Photographs, documents, news footage
7. Transitional shots: Sunsets, driving, time-lapse for time passage
SHOOTING B-ROLL EFFECTIVELY:
- Hold each shot for minimum 10 seconds (gives editing flexibility)
- Shoot in sequences: Wide -> Medium -> Close of the same action
- Get movement: Camera movement or subject movement in frame
- Vary angles: Do not shoot everything at eye level
- Shoot more than you think you need (you always need more)
- Record sound for every B-roll shot (ambient audio is gold)
- Shoot details: Hands, eyes, textures tell emotional stories

Verite (Observational) Filming
VERITE PRINCIPLES:
Observe without directing. Do not ask subjects to do things.
Your presence will change behavior; minimize that effect.
Spend time with subjects before filming so they overlook the camera.
Follow the action. Do not set up; react.
Audio is as important as video in verite. Record everything.
VERITE TECHNIQUE:
Equipment: Small, handheld setup for mobility and discretion.
Camera: Run and gun. Prioritize capturing the moment over perfection.
Audio: Wireless lavalier on subject + on-camera mic for ambience.
Lighting: Available light only. Introducing lights changes behavior.
Duration: Verite requires long shoots. Expect 50:1 shooting ratio
(50 hours filmed per 1 hour used).
WHEN VERITE WORKS:
- Following a subject through an unfolding event
- Capturing daily life and routine
- Documenting processes and systems
- Showing real interactions and relationships
- Building empathy through observation
WHEN VERITE DOES NOT WORK:
- When you need past events described (use interviews)
- When access is limited to short visits
- When the story requires explanation or context (use narration or text)
Ethical Considerations
Documentary Ethics Framework
CONSENT:
- Always obtain informed consent before filming
- Explain how footage will be used, where it will screen
- Allow subjects to withdraw consent at any time
- Special care with vulnerable populations (minors, trauma survivors,
people in crisis, those who may not understand consequences)
- Written release forms for all on-camera subjects
REPRESENTATION:
- Present subjects with dignity, even when critical
- Do not manipulate quotes through editing to change meaning
- Show complexity, not caricature
- Give subjects the opportunity to respond to allegations
- Be honest about your point of view; do not pretend objectivity
FILMMAKER-SUBJECT RELATIONSHIP:
- You are not their friend, therapist, or advocate (unless you choose
to be, and then be honest about that role)
- Do not make promises you cannot keep
- Consider: How will this film affect their life after release?
- Power dynamic: You control the narrative. They live with the consequences.
- Check in with subjects during post-production. Show them relevant scenes.
CONTENTIOUS SITUATIONS:
- If you film something illegal, you may be subpoenaed
- If a subject is in danger, your duty as a human may supersede your
duty as a filmmaker
- If new information contradicts your thesis, follow the truth
- If a subject asks you to remove footage: Consider their reasoning.
You may not be legally required to comply, but consider the ethical weight.
ARCHIVAL AND RECREATION:
- Label recreations clearly (text on screen)
- Do not present recreations as real footage
- Archival footage must be sourced and credited
- Consider context: Original footage may not mean what you imply it means
Post-Production
The Documentary Edit
EDITING PHASES:
PHASE 1: LOGGING AND TRANSCRIPTION (1-2 weeks)
Transcribe all interviews (use automated tools, then correct manually).
Log all footage with timecodes: What happens in each clip.
Create a paper edit: Select the best interview segments and arrange
them on paper/document before touching the timeline.
PHASE 2: ASSEMBLY CUT (2-4 weeks)
String together all selected material in rough story order.
Include everything that might work. The assembly is always long.
Typical ratio: Assembly is 2-3x final length.
Goal: See the full shape of the story.
PHASE 3: ROUGH CUT (2-4 weeks)
Tighten the assembly. Cut redundancy. Shape the narrative arc.
Add B-roll to cover interview edits and add visual storytelling.
Build scenes, not just soundbites.
Show to trusted advisors for feedback.
Expect this to be painful. Good documentaries are found in the edit.
PHASE 4: FINE CUT (1-2 weeks)
Polish pacing. Refine every edit point.
Finalize music and sound design.
Color correction and grading.
Titles, lower thirds, credits.
PHASE 5: PICTURE LOCK
No more changes to the edit after this point.
Final audio mix and color grade.
Quality control and export.
NARRATION (if used):
Write narration last, after the edit is shaped.
Narration should fill gaps, not repeat what the images already show.
Less narration is almost always better than more.
Record with a professional microphone in a treated room.
Time narration to the edit, not the other way around.
Distribution and Festival Strategy
Festival Submission
FESTIVAL TIERS:
Tier 1 (premiere required): Sundance, TIFF, Berlin, SXSW, Tribeca
Apply if your film is exceptional and has premiere status.
Submission fees: $50-100. Deadlines: 6-10 months before festival.
Tier 2 (strong regional/thematic): Hot Docs, Full Frame, True/False,
DOC NYC, Sheffield, IDFA, AFI Docs
Apply broadly. These festivals build reputation and attract buyers.
Tier 3 (local/niche): Regional festivals, subject-specific festivals
Great for building an audience and screening history.
SUBMISSION STRATEGY:
1. Research each festival's programming. Watch their recent selections.
2. Target festivals whose audience matches your film's subject.
3. Apply to 15-30 festivals (budget $500-1,500 for fees).
4. Use FilmFreeway or Withoutabox for submissions.
5. Protect your premiere: Major festivals require world or regional premiere.
Do not screen publicly before your target festival makes its decision.
6. If accepted: Prepare a DCP or ProRes file per festival specs.
Prepare marketing materials: poster, trailer, press kit, stills.
