When to Use

Process
Step 1: Assess the Dog and Trainer Profile
Before producing any training plan, gather the information needed to customize the plan correctly. A training plan for a 10-week-old Labrador puppy is structurally different from one for a 4-year-old rescue dog with no known history.
- Determine the dog's age precisely: Age determines session length, bladder capacity, cognitive maturity, and learning speed. Puppies under 12 weeks have brief attention spans (2-3 minutes) but exceptional neuroplasticity -- this is the prime socialization window (open until approximately 16 weeks), making early training especially valuable. Adolescent dogs (6-18 months, breed-dependent) have adult attention spans but hormonal surges that can temporarily disrupt trained behaviors.
- Determine the dog's breed or breed mix if known: Herding breeds (Border Collies, Australian Shepherds) learn commands quickly but need mental enrichment or they redirect energy destructively. Scent hounds (Beagles, Bloodhounds) are highly nose-focused and easily distracted outdoors -- train with extra-high-value rewards. Brachycephalic breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs) tire more quickly physically; watch for overheating during treat-heavy sessions. Terriers are independent thinkers -- they require short, varied sessions with interesting challenges. Northern breeds (Huskies, Malamutes) have lower food motivation and respond better to play and variety.
- Determine the dog's training history: A dog with prior positive reinforcement training already understands marker training -- skip marker loading and move directly to command teaching. A dog with prior aversive training history (choke chains, e-collars, physical corrections) may flinch or freeze in response to fast hand movements -- slow everything down and spend extra time on trust-building and classical conditioning of the marker.
- Assess the trainer's experience level: A first-time dog owner needs explicit timing instructions (the "0.5-second rule"), treat handling tips, and concrete error-correction guidance. An experienced trainer can receive more abbreviated technical instructions.
- Identify the top 1-3 training goals the user actually needs: Do not present a 5-command training plan if the user's immediate need is house training a puppy or teaching a single critical command. Prioritize based on urgency: house training and recall are safety-relevant; sit and stay are foundation skills; heel and leave it can follow.
- Assess the training environment: Indoor only vs. outdoor access, presence of other dogs in the household, daily schedule constraints. A working owner with limited time needs a plan built around 3-minute sessions; a stay-at-home owner can do 4-5 sessions per day.
Step 2: Establish the Training Foundation -- Learning Theory and Mechanics
Every training plan must begin by explaining the mechanics the trainer needs to execute correctly. Poor marker timing, inconsistent reinforcement, and treat delivery errors are the most common reasons home training fails.
- Explain operant conditioning in plain terms: Dogs learn through consequences. A behavior followed by something the dog wants (food, play, attention) becomes more frequent -- this is positive reinforcement. A behavior that produces no consequence fades over time -- this is extinction. The entire positive reinforcement system depends on the dog learning that its behavior controls the outcome: "I sit, I get chicken."
- Load the marker before using it in any command training: Present the marker (click or the word "yes") and immediately deliver a treat. No behavior required -- this is classical conditioning, pairing the neutral marker with the unconditioned reinforcer (food). Repeat 20-30 times in a single session. The test: does the dog perk up or look for food the moment it hears the click or "yes"? If yes, the marker is loaded and the trainer can proceed.
- Teach marker timing as a physical skill: The marker must fire within 0.5 seconds of the desired behavior to correctly identify which muscle movement earned the reward. At 1 second, the dog has already shifted position, looked away, or taken a step -- the wrong behavior is now marked. A useful training exercise: have the user bounce a ball and try to click the exact moment it hits the floor. This calibrates their timing before working with the dog.
- Explain treat mechanics: Treat size must be pea-sized or smaller. The dog should swallow in under 2 seconds. If the dog chews for 5-10 seconds, the training rhythm breaks and the dog loses the cognitive thread. Carry treats in a treat pouch (not pocket -- digging in a pocket every 10 seconds disrupts flow). Use a treat pouch worn on the hip to deliver treats within 1 second of the marker. Vary treat types: freeze-dried chicken liver, small pieces of cooked chicken, commercial soft treats (Natural Balance food rolls work well for slicing), cheese, or hot dog slices.
- Explain the reinforcement schedule shift: During learning (acquisition phase), reinforce every correct response -- continuous reinforcement builds the behavior fastest. Once the dog performs the behavior reliably 8 out of 10 trials (80% criterion), shift to variable reinforcement: reward 7 out of 10, then 5 out of 10, then randomly. Variable schedules make behaviors more durable and resistant to extinction. This is the same principle that makes slot machines compelling -- unpredictable rewards increase persistence.
- Set session parameters before the first session begins: 3-5 minutes maximum for puppies under 6 months. 5-10 minutes for dogs 6 months and older. End every session with a known, easy behavior followed by a "jackpot" (3-5 treats delivered one after another). The jackpot ends the session on an emotional high and builds positive anticipation for the next session. Train when the dog is engaged and alert -- after a nap or before a meal -- not immediately after vigorous exercise or immediately after eating.
Step 3: Teach Sit -- The Gateway Command
Sit is always the first command to teach for three reasons: (1) the luring technique is intuitive and easy for new trainers to execute, (2) dogs achieve sit quickly which builds confidence for both dog and trainer, (3) sit is the prerequisite for stay, which is the prerequisite for impulse control work.
- Luring technique (acquisition phase): Hold a high-value treat between thumb and forefinger at the dog's nose. The dog should be standing. Move the treat slowly up and back over the dog's head in a slight arc -- not straight up, which causes the dog to jump. As the nose follows the treat upward, the hindquarters must go down to maintain balance. The moment the rear contacts the floor, fire the marker and deliver the treat. If the dog jumps up instead of sitting, the lure hand is too high. If the dog walks backward, the trainer is moving the treat too far back -- move it more directly over the dog's head.
- Fade the food lure (transition phase): After 10-15 successful repetitions across 2-3 sessions, perform the identical hand motion with an empty hand. The dog will likely still sit because it has learned the hand pattern. Mark the sit and deliver a treat from the other hand or from the treat pouch. This separates the signal (hand motion) from the reward (treat). If the dog does not respond to the empty-hand lure, go back to the food lure for 5 more repetitions, then fade again.
- Introduce the verbal cue: Once the dog sits reliably on the hand signal alone (8/10 trials), begin pairing the verbal cue "sit" with the hand signal. Say "sit" once -- pause 0.5 seconds -- deliver the hand signal. After 20+ repetitions of this pairing, say "sit" and wait 3 seconds before giving the hand signal. The dog will often sit on the verbal cue alone during that pause. Mark and jackpot. The verbal cue is now established.
- Progression criterion: The dog is considered to know "sit" when it responds to the verbal cue alone, without the hand signal, 8 out of 10 trials in a quiet indoor environment. This is the acquisition criterion. Generalization (responding in new locations, with distractions, on different surfaces) is a separate training phase that follows acquisition.
- Common errors and fixes: If the dog knows sit at home but "forgets" it outside, the behavior has not been generalized -- it has only been trained in one context. Practice sit in 10-20 different locations. If the dog sits but immediately pops back up before the marker fires, the trainer's timing is slow -- the marker must come the instant the rear hits the floor, not after a pause. If the dog refuses to sit on hard floors (tile, hardwood), it may be uncomfortable -- place a yoga mat or rubber-backed rug under the dog.
Step 4: Teach Stay, Come, Leave It, and Heel in Progression
Each command builds on the previous one. The three dimensions of stay (duration, distance, and distraction) must be trained independently before combining. Recall must be trained as a safety-priority behavior with the highest reward value in the dog's hierarchy.
Stay -- Three Independent Dimensions:
- Duration first: Ask for sit. Say "stay" once, using a flat-palm hand signal toward the dog's face. Mark and treat after 1 second of stillness. Build in increments of 1-2 seconds: 1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds, 5 seconds, 8 seconds, 12 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds. Never increase the time by more than 50% in a single step. If the dog breaks the stay, say nothing (no correction), simply reset: ask for sit, ask for stay, and go back to the last duration the dog held successfully.
- Distance second (only after 30 seconds of duration is solid): With the dog in a stay, take one small step back. Return to the dog. Mark and treat. Never mark from a distance -- always return to the dog to deliver the reward so the dog does not come to you (which would reinforce breaking the stay). Add distance one step at a time. At 6 feet, hold for 10 seconds. At 10 feet, hold for 5 seconds -- increasing distance resets the duration.
- Distraction third (only after duration and distance are solid individually): Introduce distractions at low level: a person walking by, a toy on the floor nearby, the trainer clapping. Mark and treat heavily for maintaining the stay through the distraction. This phase is where many home-trained dogs get "stuck" because trainers skip to outdoor environments too quickly.
- Release cue: The release word ("okay" or "free") is as important as the "stay" cue. The dog must learn that position is maintained until the release word is given. Practice releasing the dog to a reward (tossed treat or play) rather than just allowing it to break on its own.
Come (Recall) -- Treat as a Safety Command:
- Begin indoors in a hallway with no distractions. Say the dog's name in a bright, happy tone, then "come." The moment the dog turns toward you, mark. As the dog moves toward you, keep encouraging verbally ("yes, yes, yes"). When the dog reaches you, deliver 3-5 treats in succession or a short play session with a toy -- recall must be the most rewarding thing in the dog's day.
- The cardinal rule: never call "come" for anything the dog perceives as unpleasant (bath, nail trim, going inside from play, going into the crate). If you need the dog for an unpleasant activity, go get the dog -- do not call it and then do something unpleasant. Every instance of calling the dog for something it dislikes adds negative association to the recall cue. Even 3-4 poisoned recalls can significantly degrade a reliable recall.
- Long-line training: Once recall is solid indoors, move to a 15-20 foot long line in a fenced area or open outdoor space. A long line is a light nylon or cotton cord, not a retractable leash. Retractable leashes teach dogs to pull against constant tension; a long line provides freedom with control. Use the long line for 4-6 outdoor recall sessions before working off-leash in a fenced area.
- Recall games: "Puppy ping-pong" with two handlers 20 feet apart, alternating calling the dog back and forth. Each successful recall earns a jackpot reward. This game builds speed and enthusiasm into the recall behavior and is highly effective for adolescent dogs.
- Do not practice recall more than 5-6 times per session -- keep it novel and always pay well. A recall practiced 50 times in a row becomes tedious; a recall that happens 3-4 times and always results in extraordinary rewards remains exciting.
Leave It -- Two-Phase Teaching:
- Phase 1 (closed fist): Place a treat in your closed fist. Present the fist to the dog at nose level. Do nothing -- simply wait. The dog will sniff, lick, paw, and bump the fist. The moment the dog pulls its nose away from the fist or glances at your face, fire the marker and deliver a treat from the OTHER hand (not the one containing the leave-it item). This is critical: rewarding from the leave-it hand teaches the dog that persistence gets the reward eventually. Rewarding from the opposite hand teaches that disengagement from the target earns reward.
- Phase 2 (open hand/floor): Place a treat on the floor and cover it with your foot or hand. Remove the cover. The moment the dog looks away from the treat, mark and reward from your treat pouch -- not by giving the dog the treat on the floor. Progress to placing the treat at distance. Then try with the treat at eye level on a table.
- Add the verbal cue "leave it" only after the dog understands the game: present the temptation, say "leave it" once, and mark disengagement. Practice with progressively more desirable items: kibble, then chicken, then the dog's favorite toy.
- Criterion for leave it: The dog disengages from a visible, uncovered treat on the floor within 2 seconds of the "leave it" cue and maintains that disengagement for 5 seconds. Do not move to practical applications (cuing "leave it" on walks for dead animals, dropped food, etc.) until this indoor criterion is met.
Heel (Loose-Leash Walking) -- The Most Complex Foundation Skill:
- Loose-leash walking is the hardest of the five foundation skills because the reinforcement history of pulling is massive in most dogs: pulling forward has worked every time the dog has walked on a leash. The dog has thousands of repetitions of "pull = go forward." This must be overwritten.
- Position the dog on the left side: This is the traditional and functional convention. Hold a treat at your left hip at the dog's nose height.
- The mechanics of the stop: The moment the leash becomes taut, stop walking completely. Plant your feet. Wait silently. Do not pull back on the leash, call the dog, or move toward the dog. Wait for the dog to create slack in the leash by backing up, looking at you, or turning toward you. Mark the moment slack appears, and resume walking. The dog learns the rule: tight leash = walking stops.
- Start in the least distracting possible environment: A quiet hallway or fenced yard. Teaching loose-leash walking on a busy street before the dog understands the mechanic is like teaching someone to drive in a Formula 1 race.
- Build the duration of loose-leash walking: 1 step with loose leash, mark and treat. 3 steps, mark. 5 steps, mark. 10 steps, mark. Then variable. Treats delivered at the left hip position (not in front of the dog) reinforce the dog staying beside you rather than forging ahead.
- Threshold for adding difficulty: Do not take the dog to higher-distraction environments until the dog walks on a loose leash for 30 consecutive steps in the current environment at least 3 sessions in a row.
Step 5: Implement the House Training Protocol
House training is not a training problem -- it is a management problem solved by eliminating the dog's opportunity to make an error. Every accident inside the house is a training setback because it gives the dog reinforced practice at eliminating indoors.
- The bladder capacity formula: A puppy can hold its bladder approximately 1 hour for every month of age, with a maximum of about 6-8 hours for a healthy adult dog (and many adult dogs need more frequent trips than this). A 10-week-old (2.5 months) puppy has a functional bladder hold time of roughly 2-2.5 hours when awake and active -- often less. During sleep, puppies can hold longer because their activity level is low. The nighttime schedule must account for this: most puppies under 12 weeks need at least one nighttime trip; by 16 weeks, many can hold through the night in a crate.
- Five mandatory potty trip triggers: Take the dog outside immediately after waking up (even from a 20-minute nap), within 5-10 minutes after eating or drinking, after any play session lasting more than 10 minutes, after any excitement event (greeting visitors, rough play), and every 1.5-2 hours as a baseline. Do not shorten this schedule because it was raining or inconvenient -- every indoor accident extends the house training timeline by days.
- The potty area: Choose one specific outdoor spot and take the puppy to that exact location every time. The scent cues from previous eliminations there will trigger the puppy to eliminate more quickly. Stand in the spot and wait silently for up to 5 minutes. Walking around the yard sniffing is normal pre-elimination behavior -- follow the puppy without talking. The moment elimination begins or completes, fire the marker ("yes!") and deliver 3-4 treats immediately. The marker and treat must arrive within 2 seconds of the last squat/elimination.
- Crate training mechanics: The crate leverages a dog's natural instinct to avoid soiling its sleeping area. The crate must be sized correctly: the dog can stand, turn around, and lie down -- not walk to a far corner. If using a large crate for a puppy, use a divider (most wire crates include one) to block off the extra space and move it as the puppy grows. Introduce the crate gradually with positive reinforcement: toss treats inside, feed meals inside, build up to closing the door for 30 seconds, then 1 minute, then 5 minutes. A puppy that is crated too abruptly or for too long will eliminate in the crate, which breaks down the crate training system entirely.
- Accident response protocol: If you catch the puppy eliminating indoors, interrupt calmly with a neutral sound ("oops") and carry or quickly lead it to the outdoor potty spot. Do not yell, do not use the puppy's name in an angry tone (the puppy will associate its name with your anger, not with the act of eliminating). If you find an accident after the fact, clean it silently with an enzymatic cleaner (enzyme-based cleaners like Nature's Miracle break down the protein compounds in urine and feces at a molecular level; ammonia-based cleaners do not fully neutralize the scent and actually attract the dog back to the same spot). Punishment after the fact -- rubbing the dog's nose in it, yelling, any physical correction -- is neurologically ineffective. A dog cannot connect a punishment delivered 2 minutes after an event to the act that caused it. Punishment of this kind reliably produces a dog that hides to eliminate (behind furniture, in closets) -- the opposite of the desired outcome.
- The supervision binary: When the puppy is not in the crate, it must be under direct, active visual supervision. This means the puppy is in the same room as the trainer, in the trainer's line of sight. If the trainer needs to leave the room for any reason -- shower, phone call, cooking -- the puppy goes in the crate. Tethering the puppy to the trainer's waist with a 4-6 foot leash is a highly effective technique: the puppy cannot wander to another room to eliminate and the trainer feels the puppy circling or sniffing, which are the pre-elimination signals.
Step 6: Build the Generalization Plan
A dog that sits perfectly in the kitchen but ignores "sit" at the park has not failed -- the behavior simply has not been generalized. Generalization must be explicitly trained, not assumed.
- The 10-location rule for each command: Practice every trained command in at least 10 different physical locations before considering it truly reliable. Start indoors in different rooms, then in the backyard, then in a quiet street, then in a moderately busy environment, then in a high-distraction environment (pet store, park entrance). Each new environment initially reduces the dog's performance -- expect 50-70% accuracy in a new location and use higher-value treats. This is normal. It is not a sign the dog "forgot" the command; it is a sign the dog has not yet abstracted the command from its specific context.
- The 3D rule for adding difficulty: Only manipulate one of the three Ds at a time -- Duration, Distance, or Distraction. Adding all three simultaneously (asking for a 60-second stay at 15 feet in a park) when each has only been trained separately almost guarantees failure. Failure in training is not neutral: it gives the dog practice at not responding, which weakens the behavior.
- Distraction hierarchy: Build distraction tolerance in stages. Start with low-level distractions (a toy on the floor three feet away), move to medium distractions (another person moving nearby), then high distractions (another dog walking past, food on the ground, children running). At each distraction level, go back to short sessions with high reinforcement rates.
- Variable environment training for recall specifically: A reliable emergency recall must be trained outdoors with gradually increasing distraction before it can be trusted. Practice recall in the backyard with the dog sniffing, then with a toy on the ground, then with another dog present at a distance. Never assume a recall trained only indoors will function in an outdoor emergency.
Step 7: Produce the Structured Training Plan and Output
Synthesize all gathered information into a complete, customized training plan. The plan must include a week-by-week progression, daily session structure, success criteria for each command, a house training schedule calibrated to the puppy's age, and a troubleshooting table for the most likely problems.
- Present the plan in the output format below, filling all fields with specifics -- no placeholder text.
- Week-by-week progression must build incrementally: introduce 1-2 new skills per week, review all previously trained skills every session, and include explicit success criteria (not just "dog should know sit" but "dog responds to verbal cue 'sit' 8/10 trials in two different rooms").
- House training schedule must be calibrated to the dog's specific age using the bladder capacity formula. A 10-week-old puppy requires a nighttime trip; a 5-month-old puppy may not.
- Troubleshooting must address the specific problems most likely given the dog's age, breed, and training history.
- Include a progress checklist that the user can actually track and check off.

Rules
Marker timing is the single most important mechanical skill to communicate. The marker must fire within 0.5 seconds of the behavior. Emphasize this to the user more than any other technical point. A late marker (even 2-3 seconds) marks the wrong behavior and confuses the dog. If the user's timing is unreliable, recommend using a clicker (more precise and consistent than a verbal marker for most beginners) and practicing timing with a ball or metronome before adding the dog.
Never recommend punishing a house training accident. Punishment for elimination accidents -- rubbing the dog's nose in it, yelling, physical correction -- is universally counterproductive. It does not teach the dog to eliminate outdoors; it teaches the dog to hide when eliminating and to fear the trainer's approach. Enzymatic cleaner and increased supervision are the only appropriate responses to a discovered accident.
Recall ("come") must never be used to summon the dog for anything the dog dislikes. Even one instance of calling the dog for something aversive can weaken a recall that took weeks to build. This applies even to neutral activities the dog happens not to enjoy at that moment. If you need the dog to end play, go get it -- never call it and punish the recall by immediately ending play.
Only one of the three Ds (Duration, Distance, Distraction) may be increased at a time. Increasing two or three simultaneously almost guarantees failure, which erodes the behavior and the dog's confidence. If the user reports the dog is "falling apart" on a command it knew well, the first diagnostic question is: did you combine multiple Ds at once?
The 80% criterion (8/10 trials) must be met at the current level of difficulty before adding any new difficulty. This is the professional standard used by trainers to determine readiness to progress. Moving too fast (the most common home training error) produces unreliable behaviors. Moving at criterion-based pace produces reliable behaviors.
Session length limits are absolute, not guidelines. Three to five minutes for puppies under 6 months. Five to ten minutes for older dogs. Beyond these limits, cortisol rises and working memory degrades -- the dog is no longer learning efficiently and may associate training with frustration. Multiple short sessions always outperform one long session. If the user reports the dog "shuts down" or stops responding mid-session, the session is too long.
Reward from the hand opposite the lure hand when teaching leave it. This is the single most commonly executed error in leave-it training. Rewarding from the same hand that held the forbidden item teaches the dog that persistence will eventually get the reward. Rewarding from the other hand (or the treat pouch) teaches that disengagement from the target earns reward.
When a behavior that was previously reliable suddenly degrades in an adult dog, recommend a veterinary check before assuming a training problem. Sudden changes in a dog's behavior, training responsiveness, or house training reliability are a yellow flag for underlying pain, neurological issues, or medical conditions. A dog that suddenly stops performing a known command or begins having accidents after being reliably house trained warrants a vet visit before retraining.
For adolescent dogs (roughly 6-18 months, breed-dependent), warn the user that previously reliable behaviors may temporarily degrade. Adolescent dogs experience hormonal changes that reduce their responsiveness to previously learned cues, particularly in high-distraction environments. This is normal neurological development, not disobedience. The response is to temporarily decrease distraction difficulty, increase treat value, and be patient. This is one of the most common times owners give up on trained dogs or attribute the dog's behavior to stubbornness or dominance -- both of which are inaccurate and unhelpful frameworks.
Never frame dog behavior in dominance theory terms. Dominance hierarchy theory as applied to the domestic dog-human relationship has been thoroughly discredited by behavioral science. Dogs pulling on leash are not "trying to be the alpha"; they are doing what has been reinforced. Dogs ignoring commands are not "dominant" or "stubborn"; the behavior has not been trained to criterion, the reinforcement rate is too low, or the distraction level exceeds the dog's current training level. Using dominance framing steers trainers toward aversive methods that damage trust, increase fear, and worsen behavior.
Edge Cases
Adult Rescue Dog With Unknown History
Treat all rescue dogs as having no prior training regardless of what the shelter reports. Do not test "what the dog knows" with rapid-fire commands on day one -- this is a high-pressure experience for an already-stressed dog.
Implement the "3-3-3 rule" as the training context: 3 days for the dog to decompress (little to no formal training, primarily just existing in the space with low demands), 3 weeks for the dog to learn the household routine, 3 months before the dog fully settles and the trainer has an accurate picture of the dog's personality and learning style. Begin formal training around week 2-3 with the simplest behaviors possible (sit, name response, hand targeting).
Watch for fear indicators during training: lip licking, yawning outside of fatigue, whale eye (showing whites of the eyes), low tail carriage, crouching, or refusing treats. These signals mean the dog is over threshold -- not ready to learn. Reduce demands, increase distance from anything frightening, and simply pair your presence with treats (classical conditioning, no commands) until the dog shows relaxed body language.
If the dog shows any flinching or freezing in response to hand movements near its face, use a hand target technique: present an open palm and wait for the dog to nose-touch it rather than moving your hand toward the dog. This builds a positive history with hand approach and is preferable to luring over the head for dogs with potential aversive hand-training history.
Dog With Zero Food Motivation
First rule out illness: a dog that shows no interest in any food at all during a training session that would normally be motivated may be sick or in pain. If the dog eats its meals normally but shows no treat interest during training, the problem is treat value or training context.
Work through the value hierarchy systematically: start with commercial training treats (Zuke's Mini Naturals, Charlee Bear), then move to Natural Balance food roll slices, then to real cooked chicken, then to real cooked beef or turkey hot dogs, then to freeze-dried liver. At least one of these will be high enough value for most dogs.
If the dog is not hungry because it free-feeds (has food available 24 hours), switch to scheduled meals immediately. A dog that is never hungry has no food motivation. Two scheduled meals per day creates the food motivation required for treat-based training.
For dogs that are genuinely more toy-motivated than food-motivated (common in terriers, retrievers, and herding breeds), use a tug toy or ball as the reward. The marker still fires to mark the behavior, but the reward is 5-10 seconds of tug play rather than a treat. Keep tug toys put away except during training so they retain high value. End tug before the dog wants to -- keep the toy slightly less than fully satisfying so the dog stays motivated.
Multi-Dog Household Training
Train each dog individually, with other dogs completely out of sight and preferably out of hearing during sessions. A dog that sees another dog getting rewarded will be distracted, competitive, or anxious. Training with multiple dogs present simultaneously should not happen until each dog reliably knows the commands individually and the trainer has several months of experience.
