Evacuation Route Planning

Mapping Your Routes

For each household member's regular location (home, work, school):

• Identify at least 2 different routes away from each major hazard
• Map routes to your designated meeting points
• Map routes to your out-of-area destination (friend, family, hotel)
• Note potential bottlenecks (bridges, tunnels, single-lane roads)
• Identify alternate roads that avoid highways (may be less congested)
• Mark gas stations along routes
• Mark potential shelter locations along routes
• Drive each route at least once to become familiar with it
• Note any seasonal road closures or construction

Route documentation:

• Print paper maps (do not rely solely on phone GPS)
• Mark primary and alternate routes with different colors
• Note mile markers and key landmarks
• Include address of destination(s) on the map
• Store copies in each vehicle, go-bag, and with emergency documents

Hazard-Specific Route Considerations

Wildfire:

• Move away from fire front and downhill from fire if possible
• Avoid narrow canyon roads (fire channeling)
• Routes should lead to large cleared areas or urban zones
• Watch for smoke reducing visibility
• Know where the fire is and where it is heading before choosing route

Hurricane:

• Evacuate inland and/or to higher ground
• Avoid coastal routes that may flood
• Plan for bridges closing hours before landfall
• Leave early to avoid traffic gridlock (24-48 hours ahead if possible)
• Fuel up vehicles early (gas stations run out fast)

Flood:

• Move to higher ground immediately
• Never drive through moving water (6 inches can sweep a car)
• Avoid low-lying roads, underpasses, and flood-prone areas
• Know your area's flood zones and history
• Monitor river gauge levels if in a river flood area

Chemical/Industrial:

• Move upwind and uphill from the release
• Close vehicle windows and set air to recirculate
• Routes should move crosswind if upwind route is not available
• Follow official guidance on affected areas and shelter-in-place zones
