When to Use

Use this skill when:

• The user explicitly requests flash fiction, micro fiction, sudden fiction, or a complete story under 1,000 words
• The user names a specific constrained format: drabble (100 words), drabble and a half (150 words), double drabble (200 words), twitterature (280 characters), six-word story, 55-fiction (exactly 55 words), or postcard fiction (under 500 words)
• The user wants a story that functions as a complete narrative -- with stakes, change, and consequence -- not just a mood piece or vignette
• The user provides a premise, image, or opening line and wants it developed into a finished piece within a tight word count
• The user is practicing flash fiction craft and wants a demonstration piece with annotated technique
• The user asks for a collection of thematically linked flash pieces (each piece is under 1,000 words)
• The user is submitting to a flash fiction journal, competition, or anthology with a specific word-count ceiling

Do NOT use this skill when:

• The user wants a story between 1,000 and 10,000 words -- use short-story-writing, which handles pacing, scene-building, and subplot in ways flash cannot
• The user wants poetry, a prose poem, or lyric essay -- these are distinct forms even when short; use poetry-writing
• The user wants a quick sketch, brainstorm, or scene fragment from a writing prompt without committing to a finished narrative -- use writing-prompt-response
• The user wants a children's picture book story or early-reader story -- use childrens-story, which has its own vocabulary, pacing, and developmental constraints
• The user wants a complete screenplay scene or stage direction-driven piece -- use the appropriate script-writing skill
• The user wants a personal essay or memoir vignette, even a short one -- that form follows different compression rules; use personal-essay
• The user wants a joke, anecdote, or stand-alone punchline without narrative arc -- that is not flash fiction; address it as comedy writing

Process

Step 1: Gather the Four Constraints Before Writing a Single Word

Flash fiction is a constraint-first form. The word count ceiling, the genre, the formal rule, and the single dramatic image are not decoration -- they are the architecture. Do not begin drafting without all four.

• Word count target: Pin down the exact count or format. Key thresholds: six-word story, 55-fiction (55 words exactly), drabble (100 words exactly), 250, 500, 750, 1,000. Each count has different narrative capabilities. A 55-word piece can sustain one image and one turn. A 750-word piece can hold two characters, one confrontation, and a resonant final image.
• Genre and tone: Flash fiction genre is not decoration -- it determines which compression strategies are available. Horror flash uses dread accumulation; literary flash uses implication and image; humor flash requires comedic rhythm and timing architecture; sci-fi flash can use a single estranging detail to do world-building work in two words.
• Formal constraint (choose or invent one): The constraint forces compression and creates form. Strong flash constraints include: single unbroken sentence, no dialogue, told entirely in questions, no character names, second-person address, told backwards in time, only one character, a forbidden word the story circles without speaking, present tense only, no verbs of motion. The constraint is not a gimmick -- it forces the writer to find meaning through restriction.
• Seed image or premise: Flash fiction begins with one specific, concrete, sensory image -- not a theme, not a message. "A woman finds her mother's handwriting inside a used book" is a seed. "Grief" is not. If the user provides only a theme, ask them to convert it to a specific observable moment.
• If the user provides fewer than these four, ask targeted questions. Do not invent constraints without transparency -- tell the user what you chose and why.

Step 2: Select the Compression Strategy

Flash fiction is not a short story that has been trimmed. It is a form built on omission, implication, and density. Select the compression strategy before drafting, because each strategy produces a structurally different piece.

• Single-moment: The entire story occupies one continuous scene, often fewer than five minutes of story-time. The narrative moves inward, not forward. Used in: domestic literary flash, horror flash, quiet character revelation. The internal change must be visible through behavior, not interior monologue.
• Implied arc: The story shows only the fulcrum -- the moment of maximum change -- and trusts the reader to infer everything before and after. The iceberg principle at maximum compression. Effective for: literary, horror, and surreal flash. Risk: the story becomes cryptic if too much is omitted.
• Accumulation: The piece is built from a series of related images, statements, or micro-scenes that escalate. The final item in the series recontextualizes everything before it. This is the engine behind "list fiction" and "you are" second-person flash. Effective for: humor, speculative, and experimental flash.
• Snapshot with depth: A surface scene that functions as realistic narrative while simultaneously working as metaphor or implication. The reader understands the story literally and then, seconds later, understands a second, deeper story. Effective for: literary flash, quietly devastating endings.
• Frame reversal: The piece establishes a reading of reality in the first two-thirds and then issues a final line that makes the reader re-read everything with a completely different understanding. This is structurally similar to a twist but operates through earned implication rather than cheap surprise. Effective for: horror, surreal, and literary flash.
• Accumulation-to-collapse: A form of accumulation where the escalating elements build toward a moment of silence, absence, or failure rather than climax. Used in grief, loss, and quiet horror flash. The collapse IS the ending.

Announce the chosen strategy to the user before drafting if the piece is longer than 250 words. For micro-formats, proceed directly.

Step 3: Architect the Opening Line

In flash fiction, the opening line is not an invitation -- it is a demand. The reader decides in the first sentence whether to commit. The opening must do at least three things simultaneously: establish voice, enter the action at its most interesting point, and generate a question the reader must keep reading to answer.

• Start in medias res, at the moment of maximum tension or change -- not the moment before it, not the backstory that explains how the characters got there
• The first word should be substantive. Avoid: "It was," "There was," "She had always," "When I was young." These are warm-up words that burn precious word count
• Use concrete nouns and active verbs. Abstract openings in flash fiction are a structural failure -- the reader has no image to hold
• Generate immediate narrative tension through information asymmetry: the reader knows something is wrong before they know what
• Strong flash openings that model technique: opening on a specific unusual action ("My mother called to say she was bringing my father's ashes to my wedding"); opening on a contradiction ("The house burned down on the same day my son was born, which is why I have always considered his birthday a lucky day"); opening mid-dialogue without speaker tags that forces character differentiation from content alone
• Avoid weather openings at all word counts. Avoid character physical description in the opening line -- it burns word count that should establish stakes

Step 4: Engineer the Sentence-Level Density

Flash fiction cannot afford single-function sentences. Every sentence must carry at least two narrative loads simultaneously.

• Dual-function sentence design: Each sentence should perform two of the following simultaneously: advance plot, reveal character, establish or deepen tone, build tension, convey setting detail, plant or pay off a motif, do thematic work. If a sentence does only one thing, restructure or cut it.
• Verb selection is the highest-leverage decision at the sentence level: In flash fiction, a strong verb eliminates the need for an adverb and often an adjective. "She folded herself into the chair" conveys physicality, emotional state, and character with one verb. "She sat down tiredly in the chair" uses four words to do worse work.
• Pronoun and name economy: In flash pieces under 300 words, character names are a luxury. A single named character with a pronoun-tracked second character is often sufficient. Every proper noun that is not load-bearing is word count wasted.
• Dialogue discipline: In flash fiction, every line of dialogue must be irreplaceable -- it must do something no action or narration can do. If a line of dialogue can be summarized in narration without loss, cut the dialogue. Dialogue tags ("he said," "she replied") are almost always cuttable in favor of action beats or context.
• Sentence rhythm as pacing tool: Short sentences accelerate; longer sentences slow the reader down and create a sense of weight or duration. In flash fiction, the rhythm pattern in the final paragraph should be deliberate -- most effective flash ends on a short sentence after longer ones, using the rhythm itself to signal arrival and finality.

Step 5: Write the Draft Without Self-Censorship

Draft the complete piece without stopping to revise. Self-censorship during drafting in constrained forms kills the organic discovery that produces the best flash fiction. Get the piece down, then cut.

• Write 20% over the word count target on the first pass -- this gives material to cut rather than forcing you to pad
• Allow the piece to find its own ending -- flash fiction endings that are planned before the piece is written often feel mechanical; the ending emerges from following the logic of the opening image
• Do not resolve ambiguity during drafting -- flash fiction's power lives in controlled ambiguity; resolve only what must be resolved for the piece to cohere
• In the draft, mark any sentence you are uncertain about with a bracket -- these are the first candidates for the cut pass
• For humor flash, land the comedic turn at approximately the 75% mark and use the remaining 25% to subvert or deepen the joke -- a punchline that ends the piece abruptly is comedy writing, not flash fiction

Step 6: Execute the Compression Pass

The compression pass is the core craft act in flash fiction. This is where a story becomes flash fiction rather than just a short story.

• The subtraction test: Read every sentence aloud and ask: does the story lose anything essential if this sentence is removed? If the answer is no, remove it. Do not keep sentences for atmosphere, warmth, or because they are well-written. Flash fiction has no room for beautiful passengers.
• Article and conjunction audit: "The," "a," "and," "but," "which" -- these function words are not always cuttable, but in flash fiction under 200 words, audit every one. Nominal constructions can often be compressed: "the sound of her breathing" becomes "her breathing"; "the fact that she had left" becomes "that she had left" or "her leaving."
• Adverb and adjective audit: Every adverb should be eliminated if the verb can be upgraded to carry the meaning. Every adjective should be challenged: does it create a specific image no noun alone creates, or does it only intensify? "A red car" adds nothing. "A car the color of dried blood" does specific work.
• Backstory collapse: Any backstory that takes more than one clause to convey must be either cut or embedded in action. The reader does not need to understand how characters got here -- they need to feel what is at stake right now. If backstory is essential, deliver it through a character's behavior, a physical object, or a single image rather than exposition.
• Precision count for exact formats: For 100-word drabbles and 55-fiction, count using a word processor's word count tool, not manual count. Contractions count as one word. Hyphenated compounds: most style guides count as one word if hyphenated, two if spaced. Clarify the convention with the user if this affects the count.

Step 7: Engineer the Ending

The ending of a flash piece is its most technically demanding element. It must complete the narrative, carry maximum emotional weight, and -- in the best flash -- change how the reader understands everything they have read.

• The last line must be the hardest-working line in the piece: It carries the story's meaning without stating it. An ending that explains its own significance is a failure of craft.
• Avoid the "landing" problem: Many flash pieces "land" in the last paragraph by slowing down, getting quiet, and becoming reflective. This is an instinct from novel writing that kills flash endings. Flash endings should arrive fast -- the last line should feel, to the reader, like the ground coming up.
• The resonant image ending: Close on a specific, concrete image that contains the story's emotional truth without naming it. The image should be simple enough to see clearly and complex enough to carry multiple meanings.
• The reversal ending: The last line reframes the entire preceding narrative. The key technique: plant a detail in the first third that seems incidental and then pay it off in the final line in a way that changes its meaning. This is not a twist -- a twist is a surprise; a reversal is a recognition.
• The silence ending: The ending withholds the expected final statement and instead cuts at the moment before resolution. The reader completes the story. This is most effective in grief, horror, and literary flash.
• What to avoid: Ending on a character's reflection on the meaning of events ("In that moment, she understood that home was wherever..."). Ending with an explicit statement of theme. Ending with a question to the reader. Ending with an unearned epiphany -- a feeling of resolution that has not been earned by the preceding narrative.

Step 8: Final Review Against Flash-Specific Criteria

Before delivering the piece, run a six-point checklist specific to flash fiction craft:

• First sentence test: Does the first sentence contain a concrete image and generate a question the reader must finish to answer? If not, revise the opening.
• Single unnecessary word test: Is there a single word that could be removed without any loss? If yes, remove it.
• Dual-function sentence test: Does every sentence do at least two things? Identify the sentence that does the least work -- either upgrade it or cut it.
• Ending test: Does the last line change how the reader understands the preceding text, or does it merely conclude? Conclusion endings are acceptable only in humor flash.
• Narrative completeness test: Does the piece contain a complete narrative arc -- a situation, a change, and a consequence -- even if those elements are compressed to a single word each? A vignette is not flash fiction.
• Word count compliance: Count precisely. Deliver the piece at the specified word count. For exact formats (drabble, 55-fiction), zero tolerance for deviation.

Output Format

Deliver the piece in the following format. The metadata beneath the title is functional -- it helps the user track their work against submission requirements.

Rules

1. Never start drafting without all four constraints locked: word count, genre/tone, formal constraint, and seed image. If any are missing, ask. Do not invent constraints silently -- if you choose one, name it and explain your reasoning to the user.

2. Never exceed the specified word count. Flash fiction word count is not a guideline -- it is the form. Exceeding it is equivalent to writing a sonnet with seventeen lines and calling it close enough. For exact-count formats (100-word drabble, 55-fiction), zero deviation is acceptable.

3. Never open with setting description, character backstory, or weather. These are warm-up moves that consume word count before the story has earned the reader's attention. Start at the moment of maximum tension.

4. Never end with a character reflecting on the meaning of what just happened. The character who contemplates her own experience at the end of a flash piece is doing the reader's work for them. Trust the image to carry the meaning. The reflection ending is the single most common flash fiction failure mode.

5. Never use "suddenly" in flash fiction. The word is redundant in a form where everything is compressed and rapid. It also signals that the writer reached for emphasis rather than earning it through structure. Similarly, avoid "realized," "understood," and "knew in that moment" as ending devices.

6. Every sentence must perform at least two narrative functions simultaneously. Audit during the compression pass: if a sentence advances only one element (setting only, character only, tone only), either load it with a second function or remove it.

7. The title is part of the piece and counts toward its total meaning. Flash fiction titles are not labels -- they are the first line of the story, operating before the text begins. The best flash titles do one of three things: provide information that the story withholds, create dramatic irony visible only on re-reading, or name an absence that the story circles.

8. In formats with exact word counts (drabbles, 55-fiction), use a word processor count, not a manual count. Contractions count as one word. Numbers written as numerals count as one word. Hyphenated compounds: when in doubt, count as one word. Clarify convention with the user on first request for an exact-count piece.

9. Do not resolve every ambiguity. Flash fiction's emotional power comes from controlled incompleteness. The reader should finish the story with a feeling, not a complete account of events. Resist the urge to explain the ending, clarify the time period, or specify the outcome. Leave the productive gaps.

10. Flash fiction is not a vignette and not a scene excerpt. It must contain a complete narrative arc -- situation, change, consequence -- even if each is compressed to a single image. If the user submits a piece for feedback and it lacks a change, name this directly: "This is a vignette -- there is no moment of change. Here is how to introduce one without adding significant word count."

Edge Cases

The User Wants a Six-Word Story

Six-word stories are the most extreme form of implied arc. The six words do not tell a story -- they are a key that unlocks a story in the reader's mind. Follow the Hemingway "For sale: baby shoes, never worn" structure: establish a world, imply an event the reader must infer, and leave a resonating emotional gap.

• Deliver 3--5 options rather than a single attempt. Six-word stories are highly subjective -- options serve the user better than a single take.
• Each option should imply a different type of arc: one tragedy, one reversal, one ambiguity.
• The gap between the words is where the story lives. Punctuation is a precision tool in six-word stories -- a colon creates one kind of gap, a period creates another.
• Avoid puns and wordplay in six-word stories unless the user specifically requests them -- humor flash requires more room to build.
• If the user provides a specific premise, generate options within that premise. If they provide only a tone or genre, generate across a range of images that fit.

The User Wants an Exact-Count Format (Drabble, 55-Fiction)

These formats have absolute word count rules with no tolerance for deviation. Treat the word count as a formal constraint identical to the meter in a sonnet.

• For a 100-word drabble: standard drabble format does NOT count the title toward the word limit. The body of the piece must be exactly 100 words. Count using word processor count.
• For 55-fiction: the form has an additional constraint -- the piece must contain a maximum of one sentence of setup and must include a twist or revelation in the final line. The title counts and must be ten words or fewer, but does not count toward the 55-word body.
• For double drabble (200 words) and drabble and a half (150 words): same rules as the drabble; title not counted.
• When revising for exact count, use structural methods first (sentence restructuring, compound construction) rather than cutting words that are doing work. It is better to cut an entire clause than to cut the word that is holding a sentence's meaning together.
• If the compression pass leaves the piece at 97 words for a drabble, do not pad with filler. Expand one existing element -- a more specific noun, a second detail in an image -- to reach 100 without weakening the piece.

The User Provides a Long, Detailed Backstory

Users who come with elaborate backstories are usually trying to write a short story or novel chapter, not flash fiction. The backstory is not the problem -- the assumption that all of it must appear on the page is the problem.

• Ask the diagnostic question: "If you could only photograph one moment from this entire story, which moment would it be -- the instant you would most want someone to see?" That photograph is the flash fiction.
• Extract the single highest-stakes moment from the backstory. Everything else becomes the iceberg: present in the weight of the prose, invisible on the page.
• Brief the user explicitly: "Flash fiction is the spotlight, not the floodlight. I'm going to use [specific moment] as the entire story. Everything else will live underneath it."
• If the user resists the compression, the piece may be better served by short-story-writing. Recommend the escalation honestly.

The User Wants Humor Flash Fiction

Humor in flash fiction is structurally distinct from literary flash and requires different architecture. The compression strategies that work for literary flash (implied arc, resonant image ending) often kill comedy by not giving the joke enough room to breathe.

• Comic flash requires a setup-turn-landing structure. The setup establishes a clear, stable, plausible reality. The turn introduces an incongruity. The landing pays it off. In flash fiction, the setup must be as compressed as possible -- every word in the setup that is not loading the gun for the turn is wasted.
• The comic turn should arrive at approximately the 65--75% mark, not the final line. The final line should either subvert the turn or complete it with a second beat. A punchline final line is stand-up comedy, not flash fiction.
• Timing is structural in humor flash: sentence length controls the pace of the joke. Short sentences before the turn build urgency. A longer sentence can be used to delay the landing and create comic anticipation.
• Avoid puns in humor flash unless the entire piece is built around the pun as formal constraint. Puns are closed -- they end the story's resonance rather than extending it.
• Self-aware or meta humor (a story about someone writing flash fiction) is technically difficult and should be attempted only if the user specifically requests it.

The User Wants a Second-Person Flash Piece

Second-person ("you") is one of the most powerful and most dangerous formal constraints in flash fiction. It creates immediate intimacy and implication but is technically demanding.

• Second person is most effective when the "you" is genuinely transferable -- when the reader can inhabit the position without resistance. This means: avoid second-person pieces where the "you" requires specific demographic details the reader cannot share (unless the point is alienation or exclusion).
• Second person flash works well with accumulation strategy: the "you do this, you do that, you have always" structure builds a portrait through behavior rather than description.
• The second-person address creates an implied relationship between narrator and subject. In the best second-person flash, the identity of the narrator (addressing the "you") becomes a slowly revealed element of the story's meaning.
• Do not shift out of second person mid-piece. The formal constraint must be maintained absolutely -- even one lapse breaks the form's hypnotic quality.

The User Is Unhappy With the Ending

Endings are the highest-leverage revision point in flash fiction. A single word change in the final line can be the difference between a story that lands and one that dissolves.

• Identify which ending type the current draft is using (resonant image, reversal, silence, or collapse) and whether it is executing that type cleanly or partially.
• The most common ending problem: the story builds to a strong final image and then adds one sentence of explanation after it. The fix is almost always to cut the final sentence and let the penultimate sentence carry the weight. This fix costs zero additional words.
• The second most common ending problem: the story has no clear final image -- it ends with an action or statement that simply concludes the scene. The fix is to identify the most loaded image or object earlier in the piece and move it to the final position.
• If the user wants a more hopeful ending: in flash fiction, a hopeful ending must be earned earlier in the piece. You cannot change only the final line without creating a structural contradiction. Identify where a beat of hope, resilience, or agency can be embedded in the body of the piece, then build to it.

The User Wants to Submit the Piece to a Journal or Competition

Flash fiction submission markets have precise requirements that differ from general writing craft.

• Word counts for submission purposes: most flash journals (SmokeLong Quarterly, Flash Fiction Online, Wigleaf, The Sun, Ploughshares) count words the way Microsoft Word counts words. Hyphenated words: one word. Numerals: one word. Contractions: one word. Verify the journal's specific counting method if it is known.
• Many competitions specify that the title does NOT count toward the word limit. Clarify this with the user if unknown.
• Competition flash often has additional constraints (prompt-based, must include a specific word, must be set in a specific location). These should be captured as formal constraints in Step 1.
• Some flash markets distinguish between flash fiction (under 1,000 words), sudden fiction (under 750 words), and micro fiction (under 300 words). Verify the market's terminology with the user.

Example

Input: "Write a 500-word flash fiction piece. Genre: quiet horror/literary. Present tense. Premise: a man discovers that photographs he took at his daughter's birthday party do not show his daughter in any of the images. Formal constraint: no character speaks aloud."

He finds them the night after the party, while his wife is putting their daughter to bed.

The photographs load in sequence: the yard with the yellow tablecloth, the cake on the folding table, the cluster of children around the piñata. He scrolls past the streamers, the neighbor's dog sleeping under the hydrangea, his wife holding two juice boxes, laughing at something off-frame.

He stops.

Goes back.

He is in the photographs. His wife is in the photographs. The eight children from her class are in the photographs, some of them with their faces turned, some of them mid-jump, their feet blurred above the grass. The cake is there, thirty-seven candles -- he counted them himself, one for each year she has been alive, because she made him promise she would always have her real age no matter how many candles that turned out to be.

His daughter is not in the photographs.

He scrolls again, more slowly. Each image is clear. The afternoon light was good. He had used the good camera, the one with the lens he bought specifically for her parties. He has thirty-seven photographs from two hours of her birthday and she is not in any of them.

There is, in one image, a shadow that falls where she should be standing -- a shadow shaped like a child, cast across the grass toward the fence. He has taken a photograph of her shadow.

He closes the app and opens it again.

He searches for the folder on the memory card. He exports the files. He opens each photograph in the desktop application, one by one, at full resolution, and looks at every corner of every frame.

She is not in the photographs.

His daughter laughs, somewhere above him, in the room at the top of the stairs. Her laugh is the same laugh she has had since she was an infant -- the same shape, the same pitch, only larger now, capable of filling more space. He has always recognized her by that laugh before he sees her.

He holds the phone very still. He scrolls back to the shadow photograph. In it, his own shadow falls just to the left of hers, and they overlap at the edge, where his reaches and hers falls short. He can see, in the overlap, that her shadow has the specific angle of her shoulders, the one she gets when she is about to run.

He has been in this house for eight years. He knows every photograph on every wall.

He gets up. He goes to the kitchen, to the corkboard where they pin the things they want to keep. Her drawings. His wife's recipes. The photograph from the hospital, the first morning.

He takes it down.

He looks at it for a long time.

Then he puts it back exactly where it was.

Compression strategy: Snapshot with depth -- the surface story of a father looking at photographs reveals, without explanation, an ambiguity about the daughter's nature. The horror is never named.

Formal constraint applied: No character speaks aloud. Silence is the story's formal environment -- the absence of speech amplifies the man's isolation and the impossibility of the thing he is discovering. The constraint forces all revelation through action and physical detail.

Structural note: The final beat -- putting the hospital photograph back "exactly where it was" -- carries the story's meaning. The action contains both denial and acceptance simultaneously; the reader decides which is operating. The piece withholds the character's conclusion because flash fiction's job is not to resolve but to arrive.

Revision levers:

• Highest-leverage line: "He holds the phone very still" -- this is the story's emotional fulcrum; the stillness is the character's only visible response to the impossible. Do not cut or revise this line.
• Lowest-leverage element: the detail about the good lens ("the one he bought specifically for her parties") -- this adds specificity and parental devotion but could be trimmed if word count is tight.
• Most cuttable: "one by one" in the desktop application sentence -- these words add rhythm but not meaning; removing them saves two words and loses nothing.
