/a/ - patte (paw) - open, like English "father" but shorter

/ɛ/ - fete (party) - open, like "e" in "pet"
/i/ - vie (life) - like "ee" in "see"
/o/ - mot (word) - closed, rounded, like "oh" without glide
/ɔ/ - mort (death) - open, like "o" in British "hot"
/u/ - vous (you) - like "oo" in "food"
/y/ - tu (you) - NO English equivalent!
Say "ee" but round your lips like "oo"
/ø/ - peu (little) - say "ay" but round your lips
/œ/ - peur (fear) - say "eh" but round your lips
/ə/ - le (the) - unstressed, like "uh"
NASAL VOWELS (air through nose AND mouth):
/ɑ̃/ - an, en, am, em: dans (in), enfant (child)
Open mouth wide, air through nose
/ɛ̃/ - in, im, ain, ein: vin (wine), pain (bread)
Lips spread, air through nose
/ɔ̃/ - on, om: bon (good), nom (name)

PRACTICE TIP: Hold your nose while saying the vowel.
If the sound changes, you are nasalizing correctly.
Consonant Challenges
DIFFICULT FRENCH CONSONANTS

R - French uvular R /ʁ/:
Produced in the back of the throat (NOT tongue tip)
Like a gentle gargle or the "ch" in German "Bach" but voiced
Practice: Say "ga" then try to make the "g" continuous
Example: rouge (red), regarder (to look), Paris
LIAISON (connecting sounds between words):
When a normally silent final consonant is pronounced
before a word starting with a vowel:
les amis = /le-za-mi/ (the friends)
un homme = /œ̃-nɔm/ (a man)
vous avez = /vu-za-ve/ (you have)
REQUIRED liaisons: article + noun, pronoun + verb, adjective + noun
FORBIDDEN liaisons: after "et" (and), after singular nouns
OPTIONAL liaisons: formal speech uses more liaisons
ENCHAÎNEMENT (linking):
Final pronounced consonant links to next vowel:
elle a = /ɛ-la/ (she has)
il est = /i-lɛ/ (he is)
SILENT LETTERS:
Most final consonants are SILENT: petit, grand, chat, bras
Exception: C, R, F, L are often pronounced (think "CaReFuL")
avec (with), pour (for), neuf (nine), hotel

Doubt: je doute que, il est possible que, je ne pense pas que
Purpose: pour que, afin que, avant que
FORMATION (regular):
Take the ils/elles form of present, drop -ent, add:
