Coordinate Systems

Essential Knowledge

Geographic Coordinates (Latitude/Longitude):
  - Measured in degrees on Earth's surface
  - Latitude: -90 (South Pole) to +90 (North Pole)
  - Longitude: -180 (International Date Line) to +180
  - NOT flat -- distances between degrees vary by latitude
  - CRS: EPSG:4326 (WGS 84) -- the GPS standard

Projected Coordinates (Meters/Feet):
  - Projected onto a flat surface
  - Measured in meters or feet
  - Required for accurate distance/area calculations
  - Different projections for different regions

Common Projections:
  EPSG:4326  - WGS 84 (GPS standard, unprojected lat/lon)
  EPSG:3857  - Web Mercator (Google Maps, Mapbox, most web maps)
  EPSG:32618 - UTM Zone 18N (New York area, meters)

Golden Rule:
  - Store data in EPSG:4326 (universal, GPS-compatible)
  - Display on web maps in EPSG:3857 (libraries handle this)
  - Calculate distances/areas in appropriate UTM zone (meters)
