German has FOUR cases that change articles, pronouns, and adjective endings.
NOMINATIVE (subject - who/what does the action):
Der Mann liest. (The man reads.)
Die Frau singt. (The woman sings.)
Das Kind spielt. (The child plays.)
ACCUSATIVE (direct object - who/what receives the action):
Ich sehe den Mann. (I see the man.)
Ich sehe die Frau. (I see the woman.) [no change]
Ich sehe das Kind. (I see the child.) [no change]
DATIVE (indirect object - to/for whom):
Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch. (I give the man the book.)
Ich gebe der Frau das Buch. (I give the woman the book.)
Ich gebe dem Kind das Buch. (I give the child the book.)
GENITIVE (possession - whose):
Das Buch des Mannes. (The man's book.)

WORD ORDER RULES

RULE 1: VERB SECOND (V2) in main clauses
The conjugated verb is ALWAYS in position 2.
Ich spiele Tennis. (I play tennis.)
Heute spiele ich Tennis. (Today I play tennis.)
Tennis spiele ich heute. (Tennis I play today.)
[Note: Subject moves, but verb stays in position 2]
RULE 2: VERB FINAL in subordinate clauses
After subordinating conjunctions, the verb goes to the END.
Ich weiss, dass er Tennis spielt.
(I know that he tennis plays.)
Weil es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause.
(Because it rains, stay I at home.)
[Note: When subordinate clause comes first, main clause
verb follows immediately = verb-verb at the comma]
RULE 3: VERB BRACKET (Satzklammer)
When there are two verb parts, they form a bracket:
Conjugated verb in position 2, other part at the end.
Ich habe gestern Tennis gespielt.
(I have yesterday tennis played.)
Er will morgen nach Berlin fahren.
(He wants tomorrow to Berlin to-drive.)
RULE 4: TIME - MANNER - PLACE (TMP)
When multiple adverbs appear, the order is:
WHEN - HOW - WHERE
Ich fahre morgen (time) schnell (manner) nach Berlin (place).
COMMON MISTAKE:
English: "I have not played tennis today."
Wrong: "Ich habe nicht gespielt Tennis heute."
Right: "Ich habe heute nicht Tennis gespielt."
Compound Words

German forms long compound words by combining shorter words.
The LAST word determines gender, plural, and word class.

TOP 10 ENGLISH SPEAKER MISTAKES IN GERMAN

3. skipping verb-final in subordinate clauses:

4. Accusative/Dative confusion with two-way prepositions:
"in das Restaurant" (motion INTO) vs. "in dem Restaurant" (located IN)
Movement = accusative, location = dative
5. Wrong past participle formation:
Regular: ge- + stem + -t (gemacht, gespielt)
Irregular: ge- + changed stem + -en (gegangen, geschrieben)
No ge- for: verbs with inseparable prefix (besucht, verstanden)
6. skipping adjective endings: Adjectives change based on case,
gender, and article type. Study the adjective declension tables.
7. Confusing als/wenn/wann:
als = when (single past event)
wenn = when/whenever (repeated or conditional)
wann = when (question word)
8. Not capitalizing nouns: ALL nouns are capitalized in German.
9. False friends: bekommen = to receive (not "become"),

10. Ignoring separable prefix verbs: The prefix goes to the END.
