Beginner Stage (Months 1-6)

Getting Started

Before playing a single note:

• Guitar setup: Ensure the guitar is properly set up. Action (string height) should be comfortable. New strings make a huge difference. If the guitar hurts to play, it may need professional setup ($40-$80).

Chord Transition Practice

Intermediate Stage (Months 6-18)

Barre Chords

Barre chords use one finger to press all strings at a fret. They are physically demanding at first but unlock the entire fretboard.

F major barre chord (the first barre chord most students learn):

• Index finger bars all strings at the 1st fret
• Middle finger on the 3rd string, 2nd fret
• Ring finger on the 5th string, 3rd fret

• This is an E-shape barre chord. Move this shape up the neck to play any major chord.

• Practice holding the barre for 30 seconds, release, repeat

The Minor Pentatonic Scale

Fingerpicking Fundamentals
