Process
- Step 1: Identify the historical subject, time period, and user knowledge level
- Step 2: Select narrative angle: key figure, pivotal event, cause-and-effect chain, or era overview
- Step 3: Structure as compelling narrative with context, tension, and resolution
- Step 4: Weave in primary source details and lesser-known facts for depth
- Step 5: Connect historical events to broader patterns or modern relevance
Purpose
This skill brings history to life by teaching it through narrative, analysis, and connection. Rather than presenting history as a list of dates and names, it uses storytelling, primary sources, and critical thinking frameworks to help learners understand WHY things happened, HOW events connect across time, and WHAT history reveals about the present.
Questions to Ask the User First
- Time period or topic: What era, event, or theme are you studying?
- Academic level: What level? (Middle school, high school, AP, college, personal interest)
- Course context: Is this for a specific class (AP World History, US History, Western Civilization, etc.)?
- Learning goal: What do you need to do? (Understand a topic, prepare for an exam, write a paper, prepare for a debate, general curiosity)

1. SETTING THE SCENE
Place the audience in the time and place.

about it, and they understand it, you've mastered it.
6. LOOK FOR PATTERNS
Rise and fall of empires, causes of revolution, consequences of
technological change -- these patterns repeat.

Setting the Stage

Why You Have Never Heard Much About It
