Core Philosophy: The Foundations of Improv

Yes, And

The most famous principle in improv, and the most misunderstood.

What it actually means:

• Yes = Accept the reality that has been established. Do not deny what your scene partner has created.
• And = Add something new. Build on what exists. Contribute.

What it does NOT mean:

• You must agree with everything (characters can disagree while players accept the reality)
• You can never say the word "no" (characters say no all the time)
• Every idea must be accepted uncritically (in rehearsal, you can and should discuss what works)

Example of "Yes, And" in action:

• Partner: "Doctor, I've been feeling strange ever since I ate that glowing mushroom."
• Yes, And: "Ah yes, the luminescent variety. Your blood work shows you're now 40% fungus. The good news is you'll never need a nightlight."
• Denial (blocking): "I'm not a doctor, and mushrooms don't glow."

The denial kills the scene. The acceptance builds a world.

Make Your Partner Look Good

The single most important principle for ensemble improv:

• Your job is not to be the funniest person on stage. Your job is to make your scene partner brilliant.
• When everyone focuses on making each other look good, everyone looks good.
• This means: listen, support, build on their ideas, give them gifts to work with.
• The opposite - trying to "win" the scene or get the biggest laugh - destroys ensemble trust.

Listen More Than You Plan

The most common beginner mistake is planning ahead while your partner is speaking. Real improv lives in the space of genuine reaction.

• Listen to the exact words your partner uses, not what you expect them to say
• Watch their body language and emotional tone
• Respond to what was actually said, not to the joke you had pre-loaded
• Silence is acceptable - a genuine reaction after a pause is better than a fast, disconnected response

Commit Fully

Half-committed choices are never funny. Full commitment to even a weak choice is more interesting than a brilliant idea delivered timidly.

• If you choose to be a pirate, be a pirate with your entire body and voice
• If the scene is emotional, go there sincerely
• If you make a "mistake," commit to it - it becomes a choice
• The audience can sense hedging. They trust performers who commit.

Fail Joyfully

Fear of failure is the primary obstacle in improv. The antidote is to make failure safe:

• Celebrate mistakes - literally cheer when someone fails spectacularly
• "Failing big" is more valuable than "succeeding small"
• Every great improviser has bombed publicly, many times
• The willingness to fail is what creates the conditions for brilliance

Scene Building

The Opening Moments

The first 30 seconds of a scene establish everything. Prioritize:

1. Who are these people to each other? (Relationship is the engine of scenes)
2. Where are they? (Environment grounds the scene in reality)
3. What do they feel? (Emotion creates stakes)

Do NOT start with: "So what do you want to do?" or other planning dialogue. Start in the middle of something.

Strong opening: "Mom, I know you said not to bring him to Thanksgiving, but-" (Instantly establishes: parent-child relationship, a conflict, a holiday setting, a third character)

Weak opening: "Hey." "Hey." "So..." "What's up?" (Establishes nothing. Now both players are fishing for the scene.)

The CROW Framework

A quick diagnostic for scene health:

• Character - Who are these people? What do they want?
• Relationship - How do they relate to each other? What's the dynamic?
• Objective - What does each character want in this moment?
• Where - What is the physical environment?

If a scene is stalling, one of these elements is probably missing.

Finding the Game of the Scene

The "game" is the central comedic pattern - the one unusual, interesting, or funny thing about this scene. Once you find it, you heighten it.

How to find the game:

1. Start with a grounded, real interaction
2. Notice the first unusual thing that happens (the "first unusual thing" or "initiation")
3. Call it out, explore it, or react to it
4. If it gets a reaction (from scene partner or audience), that is the game
5. Now heighten: do the pattern again, but bigger, or in a new context

Example:

• Scene starts: Two friends at a coffee shop
• First unusual thing: One friend gives extremely detailed, unsolicited advice about the barista's personal life
• That's the game: this person gives invasive, confident life advice to strangers
• Heighten: They do it to the next customer, then someone on the phone, each time more invasive

Emotional Truth

The biggest misconception about improv is that it is all about jokes. The best improv scenes are built on genuine emotional truth.

• If a scene is about two siblings dealing with a parent's illness, play the real emotion
• Laughter comes from recognition - audiences laugh hardest when they see real human behavior
• You can be both funny and honest. In fact, honesty is often the funniest choice.
• "Play it real" does not mean "be boring." It means find the authentic human behavior in the situation.

Short-Form Games

Short-form improv uses structured games with rules that create constraints. Great for beginners, audiences, and warming up.

Warm-Up Games

Zip Zap Zop: Players stand in a circle. Point to someone and say "Zip." They point to someone else and say "Zap." That person points and says "Zop." Repeat. Builds focus and energy. Speed increases.

Mind Meld: Two players simultaneously say a random word. The group then tries to find a word that connects the two. Players count to three and say their connecting word. Repeat until two players say the same word. Builds group mind.

Sound Ball: Pass an imaginary ball around a circle. Each time you throw it, make a sound. The catcher repeats the sound, then transforms it into a new sound for the next throw. Builds listening and acceptance.

One Word Story: The group tells a story one word at a time, going around the circle. Forces listening, letting go of control, and collaborative building.

Performance Games

Freeze Tag: Two players start a scene. At any point, someone on the side can yell "Freeze!" The players freeze in position. The new player taps one out, takes their exact physical position, and starts a completely new scene inspired by the frozen pose.

Scenes from a Hat: Audience suggestions are collected. A host reads them out, and players jump in to perform quick scenes based on each suggestion. Short, punchy, high-energy.

Emotional Roller Coaster: Players perform a scene. The host calls out emotions, and all characters must immediately shift to that emotion while continuing the scene.

New Choice: Two players do a scene. When the host says "new choice," the last player who spoke must replace their line with something completely different. Builds spontaneity and flexibility.

Party Quirks: One player is the host of a party. Other players enter one at a time, each with a secret character quirk (assigned by the audience). The host must guess each player's quirk through interaction.

Expert Panel: Players are "experts" on a topic they know nothing about (audience suggestion). They answer audience questions with total confidence. Builds commitment and justification skills.

Teaching Tip for Short-Form

Short-form games are training wheels, not the destination. They teach specific skills (listening, commitment, physicality, speed) in a structured environment. Use them to build skills, then apply those skills to scene work.

Long-Form Structures

Long-form improv creates extended shows (20-45 minutes) from a single audience suggestion. No predefined games - just scenes and connections.

The Harold

The foundational long-form structure, developed at iO Chicago:

1. Opening: The ensemble explores the audience suggestion through a group exercise (monologue, pattern game, invocation)
2. First beats: Three unrelated two-person scenes, each inspired by the opening
3. Group game: The full ensemble performs a game or pattern together
4. Second beats: Return to the three storylines, heightening the games found in first beats
5. Group game: Another ensemble moment
6. Third beats: The storylines converge, connect, or reach their heightened conclusions

The Harold teaches: patience, trust in connections, heightening over time, and ensemble awareness.

The Armando

1. A monologist tells a true story inspired by the audience suggestion
2. The ensemble performs scenes inspired by the monologue
3. The monologist returns with a new story inspired by what they saw
4. Repeat, with scenes and monologues influencing each other

The Armando teaches: inspiration vs. imitation, emotional authenticity, and organic connection.

The La Ronde

1. Scene 1: Characters A and B
2. Scene 2: Character B and new character C
3. Scene 3: Character C and new character D
4. Continue until the final scene connects back to character A

Each scene shares one character with the previous, creating a chain. Teaches: character consistency and world-building.

The Deconstruction

1. Start with a monologue or audience story
2. Perform scenes that deconstruct the themes, emotions, and patterns of the source material
3. Scenes become increasingly abstract and thematic as the show progresses
4. End with a scene or moment that synthesizes the themes into something resonant

Teaches: thematic thinking, abstract connection, and poetic improv.

Ensemble Dynamics

Building an Ensemble

An improv ensemble is more than a group of talented individuals. It requires:

• Trust - everyone must feel safe to fail, to be vulnerable, to look foolish
• Shared vocabulary - the group agrees on terms, principles, and style
• Equal voice - no one person dominates; everyone initiates, everyone supports
• Constructive feedback culture - notes are specific, kind, and actionable
• Regular practice - weekly rehearsal minimum; muscle memory matters
• Social connection - ensembles that like each other off-stage perform better on-stage

Rehearsal Structure

A solid 2-hour rehearsal:

0:00-0:15  Physical warm-up and energy building
0:15-0:30  Focus exercise (listening, group mind)
0:30-0:45  Skill-building exercise (targeting a specific weakness)
0:45-1:15  Scene work (practice runs of your show format)
1:15-1:45  Notes and discussion
1:45-2:00  Fun game to end on a high note

Giving and Receiving Notes

Giving notes:

• Be specific: "In your scene with Jake, the moment you mentioned the dog, the energy shifted - lean into that" (not "be funnier")
• Start with what worked before addressing what didn't
• Frame notes as questions when possible: "What if you had stayed in that emotion longer?"
• One or two notes per person per rehearsal - more is overwhelming

Receiving notes:

• Listen without defending
• Ask clarifying questions if needed
• Try the note in the next rehearsal before deciding if it works
• Thank the note-giver regardless of whether you agree

Common Student Challenges

Response Guidelines

When teaching or coaching improv:

• Lead with encouragement - improv requires vulnerability, and students need to feel safe
