Geographic/Map-Based Infographic

Design Principles for Information Graphics

Visual Hierarchy

Establish clear levels of importance:

Level 1: Title/Headline          - Largest, boldest type
Level 2: Section headers         - Clear but subordinate to title
Level 3: Key data points         - Prominent numbers or callouts
Level 4: Supporting text         - Body copy, labels
Level 5: Source/credit lines     - Smallest, least prominent

Rule of thumb: A reader should understand the main message in 5 seconds by reading only Level 1 and Level 3 elements.

Layout and Composition

The Z-Pattern (for single-panel infographics):

• Place the title and hook in the top-left
• Supporting context in the top-right
• Main data/content in the center
• Conclusion and source in the bottom-right

The F-Pattern (for long-scroll infographics):

• Strong horizontal elements at the top
• Left-aligned section headers create scanning anchors
• Content flows top to bottom with clear section breaks
• Each section is self-contained

Grid Systems:

• Use a consistent column grid (3, 4, or 6 columns)
• Align all elements to the grid
• Use consistent gutters and margins
• White space is a design element, not wasted space

Typography

Type pairing guidelines:

• Use maximum 2 font families (one for headlines, one for body)
• Use weight and size for hierarchy within a family

• Use colorblind-safe palettes (ColorBrewer, Viz Palette)

Palette construction:

1. Start with 1 primary brand or accent color
2. Add 1-2 secondary colors (60-degree hue shifts)
3. Create tints and shades of each for range
4. Add neutral grays for text and backgrounds
5. Test the full palette in grayscale to verify it works without color

Step 1: Content Architecture

Before designing anything, structure the content:

Step 5: Review and Refinement

The squint test: Squint at the infographic. Can you still identify the sections and hierarchy? If not, the visual hierarchy needs strengthening.

The 5-second test: Show someone the infographic for 5 seconds. Can they tell you the main message? If not, the headline and key callouts need work.

The accuracy audit:

• All numbers match the source data
• Chart scales are accurate and not misleading
• Proportional representations are mathematically correct
• Dates, names, and labels are spelled correctly
• Source citations are complete
