KANJI ACQUISITION METHOD

1. LEARN RADICALS FIRST (214 traditional radicals)
Radicals are building blocks. Knowing them helps you:
- Guess meaning of unknown kanji
- Remember complex characters
- Look up kanji in dictionaries
Common radicals:

2. FREQUENCY-BASED ORDER
Learn the most commonly used kanji first:
JLPT N5: ~100 kanji (basic: numbers, directions, time)
JLPT N4: ~300 kanji (elementary: actions, descriptions)
JLPT N3: ~650 kanji (intermediate: abstract concepts)
JLPT N2: ~1,000 kanji (advanced: news, business)
JLPT N1: ~2,000 kanji (near-native: literature, specialized)
3. LEARN READINGS IN CONTEXT
Each kanji has ON (Chinese-derived) and KUN (Japanese) readings.
Do NOT memorize all readings in isolation.
Learn the reading as part of a WORD:
Mountain: yama (kun) / SAN (on)

KEY PRINCIPLE: The verb ALWAYS goes at the end.
PARTICLES (the grammar glue):
wa - Topic marker ("as for X...")
ga - Subject marker (identifies who/what does the action)
wo - Direct object marker
ni - Direction/target/time marker ("to", "at", "on")
de - Location of action / means ("at", "by", "with")
no - Possession ("of", "'s")
he - Direction of movement ("toward")
to - "And" (exhaustive list) / quotation marker
mo - "Also", "too"
ka - Question marker (placed at sentence end)

Politeness Levels
JAPANESE POLITENESS SYSTEM

CASUAL (used with close friends, family, younger people):
Taberu. = I eat. / I'll eat.
Oishii! = Delicious!
Nani? = What?
POLITE / DESU-MASU (default for most situations):
Tabemasu. = I eat. / I'll eat.
Oishii desu. = It is delicious.
Nan desu ka? = What is it?
HONORIFIC / KEIGO (business, strangers, service industry):
Meshiagarimasu. = [You] eat. (sonkeigo - elevating others)
Itadakimasu. = [I] eat. (kenjougo - humbling self)
WHEN TO USE WHICH:
Always start with DESU-MASU form as a learner.
Use casual only when:
- Speaking with close friends who have invited casual speech
- Writing in a diary or informal messages
- Speaking with children
Never use casual with:
- Strangers, elders, superiors, customers, in-laws (initially)

Pronunciation and Pitch Accent

CHALLENGING SOUNDS:

TSU: Not "too" - tongue touches behind upper teeth, releases air

F/H: Japanese "fu" is made with both lips (not teeth on lip)

PITCH ACCENT (often overlooked):
Japanese is NOT monotone - it has a pitch accent system.
Words distinguished by high/low pitch patterns:
hashi (chopsticks) = HA-shi (high-low)
hashi (bridge) = ha-SHI (low-high)
hashi (edge) = ha-SHI (low-high, drops after)
Recommendation: Do not stress about pitch accent at beginner level.
Begin noticing patterns at intermediate level.
