When to Use

Use this skill when the user:

• Wants to build or restructure a job search plan from scratch -- including targeting, activity cadences, and tracking
• Asks how many applications to submit per week, how long a search typically takes, or how to prioritize companies

Process

Step 1: Extract the Core Search Parameters

Before generating any plan, gather all seven dimensions of the user's search. If any are missing, ask directly -- a plan built on incomplete inputs will misdirect effort.

• Target title(s): Identify the primary job title and 2-4 functional equivalents the user should search. Example: "Head of Growth" maps to "VP Marketing," "Growth Marketing Director," and "Director of Demand Generation" depending on company size. Using only one title will miss 30-50% of relevant postings.
• Industry and domain: Identify sectors where the user's experience transfers most directly. Distinguish between "preferred" and "open to" -- a user who says "open to anything" often means "anything in my current industry." Clarify this explicitly.
• Company size and stage: Use concrete proxies -- employee count (1-50 seed/early, 51-500 growth/Series B-D, 500-5,000 mid-market, 5,000+ enterprise) and funding stage for startups. Company size affects role scope, title inflation, comp structure, and process speed. Size preference determines which job boards and communities to prioritize.
• Location and work model: Distinguish between fully remote (can work from anywhere), remote-friendly (company is distributed but may require overlap with a timezone), hybrid (2-3 days in office), and fully on-site. Note any geographic constraints that affect relocation willingness.
• Compensation floor and target: Establish the minimum acceptable total compensation (base + bonus structure + equity if applicable) and the realistic target based on market data. Without this, the user cannot quickly filter out mismatched roles.
• Search timeline: Establish urgency. "Within 3 months" requires different volume and pace than "I'll know the right thing when I see it." If the user is employed, also ask how long they can realistically sustain their current role.
• Hard deal-breakers: Identify absolute disqualifiers -- specific industries, management requirements, travel percentages, or employment types (no contract roles, no relocation). These allow instant filtering.

Step 2: Diagnose the Current Situation

The correct strategy depends heavily on where the user is starting. Assess four conditions before prescribing any targets.

• Employment status: Employed (confidential search with limited hours) vs. unemployed (full-time search available) fundamentally changes volume targets, platform usage, and energy management.
• Seniority level: Entry-level and mid-level roles have much higher volume and shorter hiring cycles (3-6 weeks). Senior (Director+) and executive roles have lower volume, longer cycles (6-16 weeks), and are more relationship-dependent. A senior leader applying to 20 roles per week is using the wrong strategy.
• Market conditions for the target role: Is this a candidate-short market (high demand, fast offers, multiple competing offers) or employer-heavy market (many applicants per opening, slower processes, more selectivity)? This affects realistic timelines and negotiating leverage.
• Prior search history: If the user has been searching for 4+ weeks, ask about response rates. Below 5% application-to-interview-request rate suggests a resume, targeting, or ATS keyword problem. Above 15% first-response rate but no second-round progression suggests an interview preparation issue, not a search strategy issue.

Step 3: Build the Company Tier List

The tier list is the structural backbone of the search. It directs where to invest deep relationship-building effort vs. where to apply efficiently at volume.

• Tier 1 -- Dream Targets (5-10 companies): Companies the user would accept an offer from immediately without hesitation. Criteria: mission alignment, product type, reputation, team quality, growth trajectory. These companies receive the maximum effort per application: custom research deck, LinkedIn networking with 2-3 employees before applying, personalized cover letter, and follow-up after applying. At least one informational interview attempt before submitting an application.
• Tier 2 -- Strong Fits (10-20 companies): Companies that meet 80%+ of the user's criteria. Tailored application with customized resume and cover letter. Networking attempted but not required before applying. Follow-up after 7 business days if no response.
• Tier 3 -- Volume and Options (15-30 companies): Companies that meet the minimum acceptable criteria. Quality applications (resume tailored to the job description keywords) but minimal customization beyond that. Purpose: maintain pipeline depth, create competing offers for negotiation, and discover unexpected good fits. Tier 3 also prevents the emotional over-investment that happens when a candidate focuses only on 3-4 companies.
• Tier criteria documentation: Write out explicit criteria for each tier so the user can instantly classify new companies they encounter. This prevents re-litigating classification decisions as new opportunities emerge.

Step 4: Set Calibrated Weekly Activity Targets

Weekly targets must be calibrated to availability and seniority. Overpromising creates guilt and abandonment. Underpromising leaves outcomes to chance.

• Full-time unemployed search (30-40 hrs/week available): 10-15 tailored applications per week, 5-8 networking outreach messages, 2-3 informational interviews, 1-2 Tier 1 deep-dives, 5-10 follow-ups. Protect Friday afternoon and weekends for recovery -- job searching full-time is psychologically exhausting.
• Part-time employed search (10-15 hrs/week available): 4-6 tailored applications, 2-4 networking messages, 1 informational interview per week or 2 per month, 1 Tier 1 deep-dive, 3-5 follow-ups.
• Stealth search while employed (5-8 hrs/week available): 2-3 applications per week, 1-2 networking messages, 1 informational interview every 2 weeks, weekly follow-ups on active applications only.
• Senior/executive roles regardless of availability: Cap applications at 5-8 per week maximum. These roles require 90-120 minutes of research per application. At this level, 40 applications per week is a signal that targeting is too broad.
• Application quality vs. quantity tradeoff: A tailored application where the resume summary, top 3 bullets, and cover letter opening paragraph are customized to the specific job description converts at 3-5x the rate of a generic application. Every 10 generic applications can be replaced by 2-3 tailored ones with equal or better expected output.

Step 5: Design the Channel Mix and Outreach Strategy

The channel mix must be prescribed by seniority and role type, not applied uniformly. The 40/40/20 split (applications/networking/recruiters) is a useful default for mid-level roles but requires adjustment.

• Direct applications (30-50% of effort depending on level): Job boards with the highest signal-to-noise ratio for B2B SaaS and tech: LinkedIn Jobs, Greenhouse-powered career pages, Lever-hosted roles, Wellfound for startups (formerly AngelList), Builtin for tech-specific roles in specific cities. For finance or consulting: LinkedIn and company career pages dominate. For creative or marketing: Dribbble Jobs, We Work Remotely. Apply within the first 48-72 hours of a posting going live -- early applications have measurably higher response rates at most companies because hiring managers often review the first batch before enabling filters.
• Networking (40-60% of effort): This is the highest-ROI channel at every level but especially above $150k total comp. 70-80% of jobs above director level are filled through referrals or direct outreach before or during the formal posting. Outreach targets: former managers (highest conversion), former peers, alumni from the same university, people in the user's functional community on LinkedIn, second-degree connections at target companies. Message structure: 3 sentences maximum, specific reason for the connection, specific ask (30-minute call, advice on the company, introduction), easy yes/no close. Not: "I'm looking for a job, do you know of anything?"
• Recruiter relationships (15-25% of effort): Distinguish between agency/contingency recruiters (paid by companies, work many candidates) and executive search/retained recruiters (focused on specific roles, higher-touch). For individual contributor and manager roles, contingency recruiters can open doors. For Director+ roles, identify 2-3 retained search firms that specialize in the function. Message recruiters proactively on LinkedIn with a concise pitch: current title, years of experience, specific target (role type, industry, stage), location preference. Attach resume or direct to LinkedIn. Do not waste recruiter relationships on casual inquiries -- be specific.
• Inbound/content strategy (optional, 0-10% of effort): For users willing to invest 1-2 hours per week: publishing LinkedIn posts about their domain expertise or project results creates inbound recruiter and hiring manager contact. This is a 30-60 day compounding strategy, not an immediate one. Most effective for technical, product, marketing, and design roles.

Step 6: Build the Weekly Execution Schedule

The schedule converts targets into a daily practice. Without assigned time blocks, activity targets exist only on paper.

• Batch similar activities together: Research and writing are cognitively different from communication and follow-up. Do not mix them in the same session. Monday for research and preparation, Tuesday and Thursday for application submission, Wednesday for all outreach and calls, Friday for metrics review and planning.
• Protect networking time: Most informational interview calls happen during business hours (9 AM-5 PM). Employed users must schedule these during lunch hours, early mornings, or by taking occasional PTO. Budget at least one 30-minute call time window per week.
• Set a weekly application submission deadline: Applications submitted Monday-Wednesday get into the hiring manager's queue earlier in the week. Thursday and Friday applications are often reviewed the following week. For urgency-driven searches, front-load submission.
• Follow-up cadences are mandatory, not optional: Application follow-up: email the recruiter or hiring manager 7 business days after submitting if no response (find the recruiter name on LinkedIn using the company + "recruiter" or "talent acquisition" search). Networking outreach follow-up: 5 business days if no response to the first message. Post-interview thank-you: within 24 hours by email to every interviewer individually. Post-final-round follow-up: on the exact date the interviewer specified for a decision, if no response by that date.
• Guard against drift: Schedule a 20-minute Sunday night planning session to review the week ahead, confirm no follow-up deadlines are missed, and prepare any application materials needed for Monday.

Step 7: Set Up the Tracking System

Tracking is not administrative overhead -- it is the data source for strategy adjustment. A search without tracking cannot be diagnosed when it is not working.

• Application tracker fields (minimum viable): Company name, job title, date applied, source channel (LinkedIn, referral, company website, recruiter), current status (applied, first screen, technical/case, final round, offer, rejected, ghosted), next action date, primary contact name and email, notes on the conversation or specific details from the job description that are worth remembering.
• Weekly metrics to track: Applications submitted, first responses received (any acknowledgment or screen request), first-round interviews scheduled, second-round+ interviews scheduled, offers received. Calculate application-to-first-response rate weekly.
• Benchmarks for course correction: Response rate below 5% for 4+ consecutive weeks: resume or targeting problem. Response rate 10-20% but interviews are not progressing: interview preparation problem (redirect to behavioral-interview-prep or technical-interview-prep). Response rate above 15% but roles feel wrong: targeting definition problem -- revisit Step 1.
• Monthly checkpoint: Review channel attribution (which sources produced interviews), tier list performance (which tier generated the most movement), and adjust the following month's company list and channel mix based on results.

Step 8: Address Timeline Realism and Psychological Sustainability

Job searches routinely take longer than expected. Setting accurate expectations prevents the strategy collapse that happens when users feel like failures two months in.

• Realistic duration benchmarks by level: Entry-level (0-3 years): 4-10 weeks in a healthy market. Mid-level individual contributor (3-8 years): 6-14 weeks. Manager/Director (8-15 years): 10-20 weeks. Senior Director/VP/C-suite: 16-32+ weeks. Add 4-8 weeks in employer-heavy markets or highly specialized niches.
• Pipeline math: A healthy job search pipeline has at least 3-5 active first-round conversations happening simultaneously. With a 10% application-to-screen rate (industry average for tailored applications), a user needs 30-50 active applications in the tracker to consistently have 3-5 simultaneous first-round conversations.
• Emotional sustainability: Build in explicit recovery practices. Job searching involves systematic rejection. Schedule activities that are not search-related. Set a daily stop time (do not let searching bleed into every evening). Celebrate process metrics (conversations held, applications submitted) not just outcome metrics (offers received), because outcome metrics are partly outside the user's control.
• When to escalate urgency: If financial runway is less than 60 days, the search strategy shifts dramatically -- increase Tier 3 volume, add contract/freelance opportunities as bridge income, and activate every recruiter relationship simultaneously rather than sequentially.

**Strategy decision rules:**
- Response rate below 5% for 4 weeks → Resume or keyword targeting problem → Do not increase volume, fix quality first

- 3+ months without offer despite interviews → Compensation expectation mismatch or offer-stage issue → Review comp data, use `salary-negotiation`

Rules

1. Never produce a generic plan. Every output must include specific company names in at least the Tier 1 section (derived from the user's stated industry and preferences), specific time blocks tied to the user's stated availability, and job titles that match the user's level and function. A plan with placeholder text in the final output is an incomplete output.

2. Weekly targets must be arithmetically honest. Before finalizing targets, calculate the total time required and confirm it matches the user's stated available hours. If the user says "I have 8 hours per week" and the plan totals 14 hours, revise until the math works. Unrealistic targets cause abandonment within 2 weeks.

3. Never guarantee a timeline for receiving an offer. Job search duration is affected by market conditions, the user's seniority level, the specificity of their target role, and factors outside their control. State a realistic range (e.g., "8-14 weeks at this activity level in a healthy market") and explicitly note that this is an estimate, not a promise.

4. Networking must never be less than 30% of total effort for any search above $80k total comp. At higher compensation levels, the proportion of roles filled through referrals and direct relationships increases dramatically. A plan that allocates 80% of effort to direct job board applications at a senior level is systematically miscalibrated and will produce poor results.

5. The company tier list must include explicit qualifying criteria for each tier, not just a list of company names. The user will encounter new companies throughout the search. Without criteria, every classification decision requires rethinking from scratch, which wastes time and creates inconsistency.

6. Tailor the job board recommendations to the user's specific role and industry. A software engineer should be pointed to GitHub Jobs, Lever-hosted roles, and Wellfound. A healthcare administrator should use Health eCareers and LinkedIn. A financial analyst should focus on LinkedIn, company career pages, and boutique staffing firm relationships. Generic "check job boards" guidance is not actionable.

7. Follow-up cadences are not optional elements. Include the exact follow-up schedule (7 business days for applications, 5 business days for networking messages, 24 hours for post-interview thank-yous) in every plan. Most candidates never follow up, which makes following up a genuine differentiator at the margin.

8. If the user's search has been active for more than 4 weeks without results, diagnose before prescribing. A failing search needs diagnosis, not more activity. Low response rates signal resume/targeting problems. High screen-to-no-offer rates signal interview or comp-expectation problems. Adding volume to a broken funnel wastes effort. Address root cause first.

9. For employed users, confidentiality protection is mandatory to address. Proactively cover: use personal email and phone for all search activity; do not set LinkedIn "Open to Work" badge to public-visible (use private recruiter mode instead); do not use work devices, networks, or work hours for search activity; be cautious with references -- do not list current manager until an offer is pending.

10. The monthly review checkpoint must include a strategy decision rule, not just a metrics review. The review is only useful if it produces a decision: continue the current plan, adjust targeting, fix the resume, or accelerate volume. Metrics review without a decision framework results in users collecting data but not changing behavior.

11. Executive and senior searches require a different volume philosophy. For Director, VP, and C-suite roles: apply to fewer companies with more depth, spend more time per application, and prioritize retained search firm relationships and direct CEO/board outreach over job board applications. The 40/40/20 split shifts to 20% direct applications / 60% networking and search firms / 20% inbound and content for these levels.

12. Pipeline depth math must be explicit. State clearly: "To sustain 3-5 simultaneous first-round conversations, you need approximately X total applications active in your tracker, given your expected response rate." This prevents users from pausing applications once they have one promising conversation, which leads to a feast-or-famine cycle.

Edge Cases

User Is Employed and Searching Confidentially

Reduce weekly targets to match realistic evening and weekend hours only. Never schedule search activity during work hours on a work device or network. Recommend setting LinkedIn to "Open to Work -- Recruiters Only" (not visible to the full network, only visible to users with LinkedIn Recruiter licenses). For Tier 1 targets, prioritize getting an internal referral or warm introduction over cold-applying through the public careers page -- a referral from someone inside the company both protects confidentiality and dramatically improves response rates. If the user is a manager or director, warn that word travels in small industries, and they should be selective about which former colleagues they reach out to early in the process.

User Is Unemployed and Searching with Financial Urgency (Runway < 60 Days)

This is a two-track strategy, not a pure long-term search. Track 1: primary target search (the job they actually want). Track 2: bridge income options (contract/freelance work, consulting, staffing agency placements) that can generate income in 2-4 weeks while the primary search continues. Increase Tier 3 volume significantly, activate all recruiter relationships immediately rather than sequentially, and reduce the time invested per Tier 1 application (networking is still important but the deep research approach becomes a luxury). Set a specific financial trigger: "If I do not have an offer or bridge income by [date X], I will accept contract work while the primary search continues."

User Does Not Know What Role They Want

Do not build a job search plan for an undefined target. A search plan for "anything interesting" wastes effort and leads to unfocused, low-quality applications. Before building the plan, ask four specific questions: What did you enjoy most in your last role? What do you want to spend most of your time doing daily? What industries genuinely interest you? What does your financial situation require in terms of minimum comp? Use the answers to define 1-2 target role families, then build the plan. If the user genuinely needs career direction work, redirect to career-pivot-roadmap and return to this skill when the destination is clear.

User Is Searching in a Niche or Small Market

Some functional specializations (e.g., regulatory affairs in biopharma, actuarial science, maritime law) have very few open positions at any given time. Reduce volume targets significantly -- there may be only 5-15 relevant openings in the entire market per month. Shift the channel mix to 60-70% networking, because most positions are filled through relationships before they are posted. Extend the realistic search timeline by 50-100%. Identify industry-specific associations, annual conferences, and private Slack communities where practitioners gather -- these are the watering holes where relationship capital converts into job opportunities. Tier 3 may not exist as a meaningful category; the entire market may only be large enough to support Tier 1 and Tier 2.

User Has Been Searching for 3+ Months Without an Offer

Begin with a systematic audit before adjusting the plan. Ask for the user's tracked metrics across the three stages: application-to-first-screen rate, first-screen-to-second-round rate, and second-round-to-offer rate. Each failure point has a different root cause and fix:
