Hangul Learning Strategy

HANGUL MASTERY TIMELINE: 1-3 DAYS

Day 1: Learn 14 basic consonants + 10 basic vowels
  - Associate consonant shapes with mouth positions
  - ㄱ looks like the tongue touching the back of the mouth
  - ㄴ looks like the tongue touching the top of the mouth
  - ㅁ looks like a mouth (square shape)
  - Practice writing each character 10 times

Day 2: Learn compound vowels + syllable block assembly
  - Practice reading simple syllable blocks
  - Write your name in Hangul
  - Practice common words: 안녕 (hello), 감사 (thanks)

Day 3: Learn final consonants (batchim) + double consonants
  - Final consonants change pronunciation
  - ㄱ at end sounds like "k", ㄷ at end sounds like "t"
  - Practice reading simple sentences

Day 4-7: Speed drills
  - Time yourself reading Hangul

Sentence Structure and Particles

KOREAN SENTENCE ORDER

English: Subject - Verb - Object (SVO)
  "I eat rice."

Korean: Subject - Object - Verb (SOV)
  "Na-neun bap-eul meogeoyo."
  (I [topic] rice [object] eat)

KEY PRINCIPLE: The verb ALWAYS goes at the end.

ESSENTIAL PARTICLES:
  은/는 (eun/neun) - Topic marker
    "As for X..." / marks what you are talking about
    저는 학생이에요. (As for me, I am a student.)

  이/가 (i/ga) - Subject marker
    Identifies who/what does the action (new info or emphasis)
    비가 와요. (Rain is coming.)

  을/를 (eul/reul) - Object marker
    Marks the direct object
    커피를 마셔요. (I drink coffee.)

  에 (e) - Location / time marker
    학교에 가요. (I go to school.)
    세 시에 만나요. (Let's meet at 3 o'clock.)

  에서 (eseo) - Location of action
    학교에서 공부해요. (I study at school.)

  의 (ui) - Possession (like 's)
    한국의 음식 (Korea's food / Korean food)

  와/과, 하고, (이)랑 - "and" (listing)
    커피와 차 (coffee and tea - formal)

PARTICLES AFTER CONSONANT vs. VOWEL:
  Consonant ending: 은, 이, 을

Verb Conjugation

KOREAN VERB CONJUGATION

All Korean verbs end in -다 (da) in dictionary form.

PRESENT TENSE (polite informal - 요 form):
  Remove 다, add appropriate ending:
  하다 (to do) --> 해요
  가다 (to go) --> 가요
  먹다 (to eat) --> 먹어요
  마시다 (to drink) --> 마셔요

  PATTERN: Look at the last vowel of the stem:
  ㅏ or ㅗ --> add 아요
  All others --> add 어요
  하다 verbs --> 해요

PAST TENSE (polite informal):
  Same vowel harmony, but add 았/었/했 + 어요:
  가다 --> 갔어요 (went)
  먹다 --> 먹었어요 (ate)
  하다 --> 했어요 (did)

FUTURE/INTENTION:
  Stem + (으)ㄹ 거예요
  가다 --> 갈 거예요 (will go)
  먹다 --> 먹을 거예요 (will eat)

NEGATIVE:
  안 + verb: 안 먹어요 (don't eat)
  Or: verb stem + 지 않다: 먹지 않아요 (don't eat, more formal)

Honorific Speech Levels

KOREAN SPEECH LEVELS

Korean has multiple speech levels based on formality and politeness.
As a learner, master these three first:

1. FORMAL POLITE (합쇼체 / hapsyo-che):
   Used: Presentations, news, announcements, first meetings with elders
   Ending: -ㅂ니다/-습니다 (statements), -ㅂ니까/-습니까 (questions)
   감사합니다. (Thank you.)
   어디에 가십니까? (Where are you going?)

2. INFORMAL POLITE (해요체 / haeyo-che):
   Used: Most everyday situations, default for learners
   Ending: -아요/-어요/-해요
   감사해요. (Thank you.)
   어디에 가요? (Where are you going?)

3. CASUAL (해체 / hae-che):
   Used: Close friends of same age or younger, children
   Ending: -아/-어/-해 (drop the 요)
   고마워. (Thanks.)

HONORIFIC VERB FORMS (elevating the subject):
  When the subject is someone you respect, use -(으)시-:
  가다 --> 가시다 (to go [honorific])
  먹다 --> 드시다 (to eat [special honorific word])
  있다 --> 계시다 (to be/exist [special honorific word])

RULE OF THUMB:
  - Start with INFORMAL POLITE (해요체) as your default
  - Use FORMAL POLITE in professional/public contexts
  - Only use CASUAL when explicitly invited by someone your age or younger
  - Add -(으)시- when talking about elders, superiors, or strangers
