Leather Tanning Methods
VEGETABLE TANNED (VEG-TAN):
Process: Tanned with natural tannins from bark and plants
Characteristics: Stiff, moldable, develops patina over time
Color: Natural tan, darkens with age and sun
Best for: Tooling, carving, belts, wallets, holsters, saddlery

CHROME TANNED:

TOP GRAIN:

GENUINE LEATHER:
Despite the name, this is a LOWER grade
Layers beneath the top grain

BONDED LEATHER:
Ground-up leather scraps bonded with adhesive

Will delaminate and fall apart

Cutting Techniques
Cutting Best Practices
LAYOUT:
1. Plan pieces to minimize waste
2. Place largest pieces first, fill gaps with smaller pieces
3. Grain direction matters: Stretch goes across the hide
(spine runs head to tail; stretch is side to side)
4. Avoid belly for structural pieces (too stretchy)
5. Mark with scratch awl (fine lines) or silver pen (visible, removable)
CUTTING TOOLS BY USE:
Straight lines: Metal ruler + rotary cutter or utility knife
Curves: Round knife or sharp utility knife (slow, controlled cuts)
Thick leather: Multiple light passes, NOT one deep cut
Detail work: #11 X-Acto blade for tight curves
CUTTING RULES:
1. Always cut on a cutting mat or punching board
2. Keep blades extremely sharp (change frequently)
3. Cut away from your body
4. Use a metal straight edge (NOT plastic or wood, blade will cut into them)
5. Hold ruler firmly; use cork-backed ruler for grip
6. For thick leather, make scoring pass first, then deeper cuts
7. Cut with the good side (grain side) up
8. Let the blade do the work; don't force it
Stitching (Saddle Stitch)
The Saddle Stitch Method
WHY SADDLE STITCH:
Hand saddle stitch is STRONGER than machine stitching
If one stitch breaks, the rest hold (unlike machine lockstitch)
Creates a distinctive angled stitch appearance
The hallmark of quality leatherwork
PREPARATION:
1. Mark stitch line with wing divider (set to 3-5mm from edge)
2. Score groove along stitch line (optional, sinks thread below surface)
3. Punch holes with stitching chisels/pricking irons
- Place first chisel on the line, strike with mallet
- Overlap last hole of previous punch for consistent spacing
- Punch through both layers when possible (alignment)
STITCHING PROCESS:
1. Cut thread 3.5-4x the length of the seam
2. Thread a needle on EACH end of the thread
3. Lock needles by passing through the thread twice
4. Push first needle through the first hole
5. Center the thread (equal length on each side)
6. Insert right needle through next hole, pull through
7. Insert left needle through SAME hole, pull through
(pass behind the right needle's thread, consistent direction)
8. Pull both threads tight (consistent tension)
9. Repeat for every hole
10. Backstitch 2-3 holes at the end to lock
11. Cut threads close, melt ends with lighter (polyester) or
leave hidden (linen thread)
THREAD CHOICES:
Polyester (Ritza Tiger, Coats): Strong, consistent, many colors
Linen: Traditional, natural, waxes well
Nylon: Strong but stretches
Thickness: 0.6mm (fine), 0.8mm (standard), 1.0mm (heavy)
Wax: Pre-waxed is convenient; beeswax your own for more control
STITCH SPACING:
3mm: Fine work, wallets, watch straps
3.85mm: General purpose, most projects
5mm: Heavy work, belts, bags
Rule: Spacing should be roughly 1.5x the thread thickness
Hardware Installation
Common Hardware Types
RIVETS:
Single cap (one finished side): For layered construction
Double cap (both sides finished): For visible both sides
Sizes: 6mm, 8mm, 10mm cap diameter; various post lengths
Installation: Anvil on flat surface, rivet setter on top, strike with mallet

SNAPS (LINE 20, LINE 24):

Dyeing and Finishing
Dyeing Process
DYE TYPES:
Spirit/Alcohol-based dye (Fiebing's):
Penetrates deep, vibrant colors
Dries fast, can be streaky if not careful
Apply with wool dauber, sponge, or airbrush
Best for: Veg-tan leather
Water-based dye (Eco-Flo):
Easier to use, more forgiving
Less color depth than spirit dyes
Easier cleanup

Oil-based dye (Fiebing's Pro):

DYEING PROCESS:
1. Ensure leather is clean and free of oils
2. Dampen leather slightly with water (opens pores)
3. Apply dye in smooth, circular motions
4. Work in small sections for consistent coverage
5. Apply multiple light coats rather than one heavy coat
6. Let dry completely between coats (30-60 minutes)
7. Buff with clean cloth when dry
8. Apply finish coat (resolene, sealant) to protect color
TIPS:
- Wear gloves (dye stains everything)
- Work in ventilated area
- Test on scrap piece first
- Light colors are harder to get even than dark
- You can always go darker, never lighter
- Antique finish: Apply dark dye, wipe off quickly (stays in tooled impressions)
Edge Finishing
EDGE FINISHING PROCESS:
1. Trim edges flush if needed
2. Bevel edges with edge beveler (both top and bottom)
3. Sand edges (start at 220, progress to 400, 600)
4. Apply edge finish compound (Tokonole, gum tragacanth, or beeswax)
5. Burnish with wood slicker or canvas
- Apply firm pressure, rub back and forth rapidly
- Heat from friction melts fibers together
- Repeat compound + burnish 2-3 times for glass-like edge
6. For dark leather: Apply edge paint (Uniters edge paint)
- Apply thin coat with edge roller or fine brush
- Let dry, sand lightly, apply second coat
- Produces clean, consistent colored edge
EDGE QUALITY LEVELS:
Basic: Beveled and sanded (adequate for practice)
Good: Beveled, sanded, burnished with compound (standard for sales)
Excellent: Multiple rounds of sand, compound, burnish (professional)
Premium: Edge paint, multiple coats, sanded smooth (luxury goods)
