What Stage Presence Actually Is

Stage presence is not a gift you are born with. It is a set of learnable behaviors rooted in three things:

1. Commitment: Every movement and expression is intentional, not accidental
2. Connection: You are performing WITH the audience, not AT them
3. Confidence: Not arrogance; rather, the visible belief that you belong on that stage

Physical Presence

Stance and movement:

• Plant your feet. A stable base projects confidence. (If you are a performer who moves, move with purpose.)
• Use the full stage. Do not anchor to the microphone stand the entire set.
• Move toward the audience during high-energy moments. Step back during intimate ones.
• Avoid unconscious repetitive movements (swaying, rocking, tapping foot constantly)

Performance mapping: For each song, decide:

• Where on stage will you be for each section?
• Are there moments where you step to the edge of the stage?
• Where do you make eye contact with the audience?
• Where do you close your eyes and turn inward?

Energy levels: Not every song should be at 10. Map your energy across the set:

Facial Expression

Your face communicates emotion before your voice does:

• Feel the emotion of the lyric and let it show
• Smile during joyful moments (audiences mirror your expression)
• Close your eyes during vulnerable passages (shows emotional connection)
• Make eye contact with specific people (not scanning; real eye contact for 2-3 seconds)
• Between songs: relaxed, present, approachable

The Camera Test

Record yourself performing a full set. Watch it without sound. Does your body tell the story of the songs? If you look the same in every song, you need more physical variation.

Setlist Construction

The Arc of a Set

A great setlist tells a story with its own narrative arc:

Song 1: OPENER
  - High energy, confident, sets the tone
  - Your most accessible song (not necessarily your best)
  - Tells the audience: "You're in good hands"

Songs 2-3: ESTABLISH
  - Keep energy up, build momentum
  - Songs the audience responds to well

Song 9: BUILD TO CLOSE
  - Energy rising toward the finale
  - Fun, engaging, gets people moving

Song 10: CLOSER
  - Your biggest, most memorable song
  - Leave them wanting more
  - Should end definitively (not fade out)

  - 1-2 songs
  - One intimate, one explosive

Setlist Principles

Adjusting to the Crowd

Read the room and adapt:

• If the crowd is cold: move a high-energy song earlier, cut a ballad
• If the crowd is rowdy: lean into energetic songs, save the quiet one for later
• If the crowd is intimate/listening: do not force energy; match their vibe and deepen it
• If you are losing them: make eye contact, ask a question, change the plan

Sound Check Protocol

What to Accomplish in Sound Check

Sound check is not a rehearsal. It is your opportunity to:

1. Ensure every instrument and vocal is heard clearly in the house mix
2. Get your monitor (stage) mix right so you can hear yourself
3. Check for feedback, buzz, and technical problems
4. Get comfortable on the stage before the audience arrives

Sound Check Procedure

Step 1: Line check (one instrument at a time)

• Each instrument plays alone while the sound engineer adjusts levels
• Drums first (kick, snare, toms, overheads, hi-hat)
• Bass
• Guitars/keys
• Vocals (each singer individually)
• Sing at PERFORMANCE volume, not quiet sound check voice

Step 2: Monitor mix

• This is what YOU hear on stage
• Ask for what you need: "More vocals in my monitor," "Less drums," "Can I get some bass?"
• Be specific and polite
• Every musician should hear their own instrument and the vocals

Step 3: Full song

• Play one song (preferably a mid-tempo song that represents your overall sound)
• The sound engineer adjusts the house mix during this
• Walk the room during sound check if possible - hear what the audience will hear

Sound Check Etiquette

• Arrive on time (sound check times are often tight)
• Know your gear: bring backup cables, batteries, strings, picks
• Do not play during someone else's sound check
• Thank the sound engineer by name if possible
• If you have specific needs (effects, monitors), communicate them before sound check

When There Is No Sound Check

At many club gigs, you get a line check only (30 seconds per input, no full song). In this case:

• Set up quickly and efficiently
• Have your levels from the last gig noted on tape on your gear

The moments between songs define the feel of your show as much as the music.

What to say:

• Brief, genuine, and warm

• Ask a question: "How many of you have been to this venue before?"
• Make a joke if it is natural (do not force comedy)
• Introduce band members during a high-energy moment

What not to say:

• Long, rambling stories (save those for podcast interviews)

• Excessive self-deprecation
• Inside jokes only the band understands

Silence is okay: A confident pause between songs, where you take a drink of water and let the moment breathe, is better than nervous chatter.

Managing Performance Anxiety

Understanding Stage Fright

Performance anxiety is a normal physiological response. Your body is preparing for a high-stakes situation by flooding you with adrenaline. The symptoms (racing heart, shaky hands, dry mouth, nausea) are the same chemicals that enhance performance - if you reframe them.

Before the Show

Physical preparation:

• Eat a moderate meal 2-3 hours before (not immediately before)
• Avoid caffeine for 4+ hours before (amplifies anxiety symptoms)
• Avoid alcohol to "calm nerves" (impairs performance and creates dependency)
• Light exercise: a 15-minute walk helps burn off excess adrenaline
• Vocal and physical warm-up (warm body = less tension)

Mental preparation:

• Visualization: mentally walk through the entire set going well
• Reframe anxiety as excitement: "I'm not nervous, I'm excited" (research supports this)
• Pre-show ritual: develop a consistent routine that signals "it's showtime" to your brain
• Focus on what you want to give the audience, not what you fear they will think

During the Show

If anxiety spikes:

• Take a deep breath between songs (the audience reads this as calm confidence)
• Plant your feet (physical grounding calms the nervous system)
• Find a friendly face in the audience and play to them
• Focus on the music, not on yourself. Lose yourself in the song.
• Remember: the audience wants you to succeed. They are on your side.
